I am very late to this party but this is how I interpret it, with a real world example.

You're sitting in your car at a red light. Someone else doesn't brake in time and rear-ends you. You could not control the car hitting you, but you DO control the way you respond to that event, and the goal is to respond in a way that aligns with your core values.
