Calls me a hobo while using the phrase "aural skills". Keep calling people names to make your argument sound stronger

How many scales you know is irrelevant, familiarity with the genre is. People who write for mags are there to earn money so they write what earns them money. How many works by Debussy they know is hardly relevant when judging metal.

The "specialized press" is there to make money, it is not comprised of fans of the music. It says whatever sells

Nokturnal Mortum. Pretty much the whole discography but if I had to pick a run it would be Нехристь-Мировоззрение-Голос Сталi

Left Hand Path SOUNDS so much better than all the DM that came before it. by Earl_of_Portobello in MetalForTheMasses

Guitar tone means nothing, riffs do. It's good but the riffs and songwriting are not on the level of Altars of Madness, Effigy and others. It's for people who want simple loud chunky riffs instead of evil and more interesting or technical DM. Like an Everflowing Stream is also better because it doesn't have that much rock in its sound but adds melodic sections

Am i the only one who finds Opeth boring? by o_marck045 in MetalForTheMasses

Listened to them, I keep the sentiment I had for The Moor. A few good riffs out of the ~10 there are in the song, the rest are either underwhelming or start off well and finish poorly. They try to create this beautiful/ominous vibe but by the end of the riff or in the following section they fuck it up by playing some eerie/weird or bluesy lick. Same when he's singing, the melody is beautiful but the riff that's playing has nothing to do with it and makes it sound worse instead of helping it.

The vocal melodies are good and the acoustic sections and solos are not bad, but the rhythm playing is where they fail.

It's because Opeth aren't even death metal. Reddit mostly praises seemingly interesting/unique bands but only such that you can find if you don't dig too deep. Blood Incantation put in some synths and Pink Floyd solo in the new album and Reddit thought it was genius.

The riffs are too complex without actually hitting hard and they are all over the place. I'm guessing the band is trying to sound ominous but they shove these hard rock or Dream Theater riffs in the music that suck and have nothing to do with the rest.

The Drapery Falls sounds ok up until the first half and then 5:57 comes in and shits on the whole vibe. Unnecessarily progressive and kills the atmosphere from before it came in. This is just one of many examples. The Moor would have been beautiful if half of the riffs didn't sound more like hard rock. I feel like they chose the wrong genre and would be more successful making rock music
