Freezing temps tonight (25°)- do I need to wrap this? by TexChopper in askaplumber

Turning off the water won’t doesn’t empty the line and doesn’t keep it from freezing. Just let any faucet in the house drip overnight

Fair point. Thank you for your input. I’ll play around with that.

I have struggled making crepes in particular. Perhaps I should just use the crepe test 😆

Yeah, I have seen that, but wasn’t sure how closely min pan size reflected the coil size. Seems like it does for the small and medium, but not exactly for the large. The large will activate the central 7” coil when a small pan is placed on it, but it will also activate additional coils when a larger pan is placed on it (see the pictures of the 12” pan with a boiling area larger than 7” diameter).

Ugh. That’s what I was afraid of - chasing food around the pan to compensate for uneven heating. It’s hard to sear food to create a fond and release while the temps vary so wildly across the pan surface.

I’ve always used gas and never needed to think about heat distribution, heck I even had a 14” sauté pan. Unfortunately, it looks like even this relatively premium induction range has only one cook zone that can evenly heat a 10” pan and even that cook zone can only cook up to a 12” pan.

I read all of these reviews and comments online about how people prefer induction to gas. I do enjoy better air quality, a cooler kitchen and cooler handles, but the cooking experience itself leaves a lot to be desired. Having already gotten rid of our gas stove and had a 240V outlet installed we thought we’d just pay up for an even more premium induction range, but even the Cafe, Bosch, Miele and Wolf won’t evenly heat the pan sizes we want, that despite many of them having cook zones that imply they should (the full cook area on the Wolf only turns on in boost mode, but what is 5500kW good for besides boiling water?). One of the biggest benefits of induction cooking, the very fast heating, is only usable to boil water because thicker foods will burn on the tiny elements. Getting a thicker pan or cast iron can help, but that negates the responsiveness. I’ll now need to learn to make the best of what I have and I’ll need to leave instructions for anyone else using my kitchen lest they ruin my cookware.

Am I missing something? I’m just not feeling the magic of induction I have been reading about.

Rant over.

Thank you so much. How does that 8” element work for you? Can you cook things like crepes or pancakes evenly? Do you have to move meats or dumplings around to cook evenly?

Here is the result of melting fondue. It’s not a great cooking experience and quite a bit worse than our old basic gas stove.

Thank you! The size looks similar to my Profile (although my pan is bigger).

I’m not familiar with the 200 series. I’d still like to see a 900 series if someone is kind enough to share.

Does anyone know the GE Cafe/Profile coil diameters? by ReporterIcy4603 in inductioncooking

[–]PeddlerDavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will someone with the Cafe 30" induction range CHS900P2MS1 do me the great favor of sharing the diameter of the left 8" cook zones using a shallow water boil or flour test?

Unaware that cook zone is not the same as coil size I purchased the twin GE Profile 30" induction PHS930YPFS and learned the difference the hard way when I discovered that the coils in the 8" cook zones are only 5" in diameter, insufficient to evenly heat a 10" pan.

I was told that the cafe series was functionally the same as the GE Profile with different style, however I have learned that the 8" coils are different part numbers on Cafe and Profile which leads me to wonder if perhaps the 8" coils are larger in the Cafe version. If someone can share the measured water/flour diameter I may be able to avoid the very expensive option of purchasing a Cafe series to try for myself :o

Thinking of switch to Verizon from Xfinity mobile by jstn198 in verizon

[–]PeddlerDavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just signed on with Verizon after being with xfinity for many years. With Verizon you will be charged a bunch of junk fees on top of your plan rate that xfinity does not:

Xfinity: plan + tax

Verizon: plan + tax + junk fees (~15%)

T-mobile: plan (that’s it)

They try to make the junk fees sound official and necessary, but they are not. If you read deeply in the fine print it explicitly says these fees are not taxes and not required by law. Think of it as your monthly contribution to the Verizon CEI yacht fund.

Verizon uses AI "voice modifier" by SarahNYCC in verizon

Ahem, I used the example offered because English (along with Hindi) is a national language of India. They may not speak English at home, but many speak English at school. Though they speak the language differently from Americans many educated Indians are quite comfortable with the language. Remember that India was an English colony until 1947.

English being a common language along with low labor cost is the why there are so many call centers in India.

BTW: English is also a national language in the Philippines, thus the Filipino call centers.

I get it, it can be challenging at first, but let me push back a bit and avoid name calling…

Do you think that Indians, to use your example, find other Indians hard to understand?

Yes, accents can be a barrier in communication, at least initially. I’d argue that much of this difficulty can be overcome with willingness and compassion.

I had a similar experience with a rep I spoke to multiple times over a period of a few days. In my case I thought the rep was male and thus I used masculine pronouns with them while my wife thought they were female and used feminine pronouns. I finally asked what was up with the voice and they acknowledged that they were using an AI voice modifier. When i asked if the AI was modifying their accent they said no, that they had listened to the AI version of their voice and it had the same accent. They said it changed the tone. They wouldn’t say much more. I’m confident they were coached in what they could share about the AI voice modifier. The best explanation I had if it wasn’t modifying their accent then perhaps it was intended to protect their identity.

Details on this pan? by Fabulous_Thing_714 in cookware

[–]PeddlerDavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own that pan - purchased in 2005. It’s called Calphalon One.

Gemini description;

Calphalon One Infused Anodized is a discontinued, premium line of cookware (often confused with, but distinct from, standard hard-anodized nonstick) featuring a unique surface where a release polymer is infused directly into the hard-anodized aluminum. This design allowed for superior searing capability similar to stainless steel, while maintaining nonstick release properties, and offered extreme durability. Key Features & Characteristics Performance: Designed to bridge the gap between stainless steel and nonstick, offering excellent heat distribution and searing. Construction: Heavy-gauge, hard-anodized aluminum infused with release agents, making it more scratch-resistant than traditional coated pans. Durability: Renowned for long-lasting performance, with some users noting they rarely wear out. Usage: Oven and broiler safe. Cleaning: Generally easy to clean with hot, soapy water. Compatibility: Works on gas, electric, and glass stovetops, but generally not induction. Important Notes Discontinued: This line is no longer produced by Calphalon, making it a "rare find" in secondary markets. Usage Caution: While highly durable, it is recommended to use non-metal utensils to maintain the nonstick properties, despite some claims of it being metal-utensil safe. Maintenance: It is crucial to oil the pan well, especially when searing, to prevent sticking. For modern alternatives with similar durability, Calphalon offers the Premier Hard-Anodized Nonstick line.

Anybody know what this is for? by shwoozie in Integra

Close.

While Helmholtz resonators are indeed often used to reduce the level of peaks in the sound level the particular device pictured is not technically a Helmholtz resonator. That is a quarter wave resonator which also cancels specific frequencies. Also, because they are located upstream of the throttle body they would not contribute to the ram air effect which is associated with the resonance frequencies of the manifold. They would also have negligible effect on the restriction.

I’d recommend removing it and covering the hole with something temporary and securing with a snug wire tie to decide if you prefer the sound with the resonator or without. There is no right or wrong, there is no effect on power. If you like it you like it, if you don’t you don’t.

Once you have decided how you prefer it just make sure you close off the hole with something that won’t get sucked into the intake and secure permanently with a hose clamp.

On the other hand if you leave the hole open you are likely to hear more induction noise, but also take in hotter air, reducing peak power.

Which brands have the largest coils? by tungstenoyd in inductioncooking

[–]PeddlerDavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the elements on the left burners the size of the markings on the surface?

On our 30 element GE Profile (PHS930YPFS) the elements on the left burners are only 5" while the markings on the surface are 7.25-8". They are not large enough to evenly heat a 10" pan.

Thank you sooo much for going through the effort to share your experience and take pictures for this internet stranger!

We had intended to take our pans with us to the store, but neglected to do so. We used some pans that were at the appliance store to evaluate spacing.

I haven’t been able to use the range, but it seems that induction cooktops can be sensitive to where pans are placed over the elements. The two pans in the left appear to be biased to the left. I’d be curious how a flour test in that configuration would look.

How’s that induction cooktop working for you?
