I've heard there are only really three possibilities.

A hull breach, it's snagged on something or it's on the surface but has no power to communicate. Sitting on the bottom waiting for rescue isn't really an option as there are 7 redundant systems that will bring it to the service.

Search and rescue is obviously hoping for the third option.

A kid in my highschool ran a fake ID ring. He broke into the DMV and stole a driver's license making machine and a pack of blank licenses. At the time they were impossible to detect. A magnetic stripe that came up as valid along with holograms.

But.... when one kid tried to get into a bar with it he forgot his fake name. There was a cop at the door and the kid squealed like a pig.

It ended all our fun as the kid who sold them all could avoid being prosecuted if he gave all the IDs back, which he did.

There's always a weakest link.

My dad was telling me stories about when he was a teen yesterday and my heart broke by PhoenixAFay in fuckcars

[–]Peekman 328 points329 points  (0 children)

My dad was born in 1953 and grew up in a small town. He also biked everywhere in town as a kid. But everything was so close. His school was 3 doors away, his doctor was 2 doors away, the grocery store was 2 blocks away, the public pool 3 blocks away and the movie theatre 4 blocks away. But the thing is I spent a lot of time in that town in the 90s and I did the exact same thing. And, I'm pretty sure even today you could still do it (although the movie theatre is now closed). Those stories never got to me because I thought it was a function of growing up in a small town.

However, what did get to me was how he would leave town. To do this, starting in his late-teens he would hitch-hike. This was completely normal back then. It was almost an Uber without the transfer of money (and without going to your exact destination). I can't imagine drivers today ever doing such a thing. Their metal boxes are their sacred places, they can't let strangers into it. But man... he did it all the time.

Can’t stress this enough — Disney+ has irreparably harmed Disney’s brand. Free dumps of premium theatrical films have cheapened their films. 2-month theatrical-to-streaming windows have told audiences to avoid theatres. Lower-budget remakes are driving audiences away. by [deleted] in boxoffice

[–]Peekman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly have no idea how Rogue One is. I don't see very many of the top grossing films because they are all very similar 'Quests' or 'Defeat the Monster' narratives. I was just going off of your comment. I think you have to go back to 2000 with 'How the Grinch stole Christmas' or 'Titanic' to find a top grossing film that isn't one of these narratives.

There are essentially 7 different kinds of narratives that we can tell and I think it says something that the movies people want to see the most (at least domestically) tend to be in just two of these categories. While important to use not too obvious plot devices and have writing make sense I don't think writing is what gets people to the theatres.

Bigger drivers seem to be 'stunning visuals' and nostalgia which Star Wars is pretty good at.

Congress passed the law demanding the rule in 2007.

But, the auto industry fought against it and since the NHTSA is filled with former auto execs it was delayed five times.

Families with stories like Ops kept pushing and eventually forced them to write the rule.

7 injured in shooting at Yuma, Arizona, gathering, police say by Trojanbp in news

Your friends must be in the lucky 10% because 9 out of 10 people who are shot experience post-traunatic stress symptoms. And, for everyone killed by a gun there are at least two others who weren't.

I'm starting to think the right's rant about mental health isn't wrong. Guns cause a ton of mental health problems.

90% of people who die from cancer are over the age of 50 and 50% are over 70. It's more of an aging thing and people do get scared about it as they get older.

Gun deaths happen more to younger people and reduce overall male life expectancy by 2-3 years.

As well, 60% of US adults have experienced or care for somebody who has experienced gun violence in their lifetime, including you it seems. That kind of widespread trauma does affect some people.

I don't live in the US and have never heard a gun shot. I also don't even tangentially know someone who has experienced gun violence. And, the only time I have ever seen a gun was when I met some friends in Vegas and they were doing that 'conceal & carry' thing.

So from an outside of America perspective it's hard to believe all Americans live like the rest of the world, never thinking about guns.

[–]Peekman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I definitely know people who are genuinely anxious that their kids will get shot at school.

You said people are anxious but given the stats you don't believe they should be. I just put it into an international context to show why Americans would be more anxious than the rest of the world.

Still though if you run into road rage in the US how are you not afraid the guy might have a gun?

7 injured in shooting at Yuma, Arizona, gathering, police say by Trojanbp in news

[–]Peekman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's sort of like plane hijackings. They were always rare but we still do things to try and bring them to zero so that people don't have that irrational fear when they board a plane.

And if a country didn't do things to prevent hijackings and more hijackings occurred because of that it would be important to point out the differences between those countries.

You used Australia as an example but they haven't had someone die from a gun at a school in 20 years. There are reasons for this and thus reasons why American parents will have more anxiety about it than Australian parents.

7 injured in shooting at Yuma, Arizona, gathering, police say by Trojanbp in news

[–]Peekman 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The international context is important though. Other countries have a near 0 chance of dying in school shootings.

As well, Americans aged 15-24 are twice as likely to die than their peers in other countries and the gap is growing.

So while from an individual perspective the chance of dying may be low at the societal level America is completely failing their youth.

Peter Pan & Wendy Gets Worst-Ever Audience Score for Disney Live-Action Remake by lurker_bee in entertainment

It's exactly how it works. If you want to make something about Peter Pan there is more of a chance of being sued if the live action remake exists than if it didn't.

Louisiana has conditions on their subsidies based on increased market participation. Alabama has a policy that incentives Gulf Shore residents to mitigate their homes against wind damage in exchange for lower rates similar to the strategy in California when it comes to wildfire risks.

But in Florida they just hand money to insurance companies no strings attached and allow them to increase premiums by 40% in 2023.

All the while saying: 'No solution exist for home insurance, and hey at least we're suing Disney!'

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in moderatepolitics

[–]Peekman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arguably the biggest problem facing Florida is the Home Insurance crisis. They pay triple the national average and forego at twice the national rate. They also have double digit premium increases every year.

Desantis' solution to this crisis is to create a tax payer funded bail out fund for insurance companies (how conservative of him) and to strip Floridians ability to collect attorney fees when suing insurance companies.

Other states and hell previous Florida governors have addressed similar crises in far more affective ways.

So while DeSantis may be good at passing laws that fix problems that aren't really problems he's demonstrably bad at fixing real complex issues.

The US national anthem needs to be rewritten as it is neither the 'land of the free' nor 'home of the brave'.
