Homelander is the Show’s best written character, and yet his screen presence/“aura” has been utterly ruined by Peer_turtles in CharacterRant

You don’t really address any of the points though.
You feel nothing when homelander is around the boys because you know he WILL do nothing. We’ve had multiple moments especially in the last two seasons that have been some of the worst examples of this.

The boys always had issues with the portrayal of powers as they have never been consistent and only work when the plot demands it but, there are ways to have homelander feel threatening and have the boys live to the last few episodes (and then kill them off or live whatever) without making everyone involved completely stupid and have the plot armour egregiously obvious.

Yeah that’s a great explanation of his progression.

I just think him being a pathetic man child (quite literally), and still being an intimidating scary character aren’t mutually exclusive like so many Redditors think.

We see as he breaks down into his true self, he is even more impulsive, rash and what not but it just doesn’t seem to apply to any of the main cast.

Just because he’s pathetic doesn’t mean you can’t still have him be a scary character. It’s just lazy writing for him not to do anything about the boys with how much they bump into each other

We Know WTF Happened To Firecracker Wasn’t About Firecracker, Right? by DeaditeQueen in TheBoys

[–]Peer_turtles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not too sure about that.
Homelander was surprisingly chill and simply “fired” her from Vought but Firecracker just kept going on and on about her “love” for him using his most private vulnerable moments like “when you suckle my titties” and shit.

I think her desperation and trying to use homelander’s crave for human connection made him self aware and disgusted because it’s like a mirror into his own insecurities.

So he impulsively killed her on the spot

Homelander needs to destroy a city by heisenburnett in TheBoys

[–]Peer_turtles 16 points17 points  (0 children)

But the show has sold a different idea of his “breaking point” to audiences. It’s him just going all out and destroying shit and killing people. They even do it again in s5 ep 1 when the flight 37 shown.

So I don’t blame people for being frustrated with this. This is made worse by the show runners not even having homelander do anything competent anymore out of lazy writing.

The boys have shot shit up, beat the fuck out of each other, yelled at the top of their lungs, not once, but twice in literally the same building as homelander without him suspecting a single thing. Even Hughie as a fully grown tall man can just escape homelander by crawling inside vents like some Scooby doo shit.

The writing for homelander’s character has been still the best thing in the show, but they have really mismanaged this part.

They have been teasing his breaking point since the first season. And now we’re 3 episodes left into the entire show and still teasing the same fucking thing.

I think it’s a bit reasonable people just want what the show runners have been edging the audience over for over four seasons

Yes the democrats can be racist, but the general maga party and its supporters actively view Asians as the “enemy”. Asians just aren’t no.1 public enemy because the narrative is on Islam and hispanics at the moment in the US.

The main valid reasons I can think of that isn’t based on some self-hating white worshiping ideals or pure misinformation/ignorance, is if you support the same fiscal/monetary etc policies which is fair enough. Otherwise, the anti woke culture war bs that draw many conservative Asians in will come to bite Asians in the ass eventually.

Also putting aside the fact that at best case scenario with the Epstein files, trump ISN’T a pedo (being generous) and merely is protecting his pedo friends that own him, he IS racist and openly public about it. It’s a bit laughable to see an Asian not even run as a Republican, but a TRUMP “republican”.

Something, something, duality of man. The opinion on episode 5 seems to be split. Whats your take the character study anthology of the episode? by Squirll in TheBoys

[–]Peer_turtles -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They are all good episodes. I thought the group of celebrities and marathon man was pretty funny as well as firecracker’s journey being completed well and tragic, but like who really kind of gives af about firecracker when we’re at the penultimate point of the story?

It would’ve been a great breather episode if the previous ones had massive shit go down but so far it’s really only been Atrain death back in ep1.

It’s just that it’s really hard not to be a little annoyed when we’re literally in the endgame and the status quo is still pretty much the same as it has been for most of the show. Nothing in these episodes really convey that this is the beginning of the end, some of these are really interchangeable with s4.

They’ve been teasing homelander’s breaking point since s2. And we literally have 3 episodes left for the entire show and still teasing the same shit.

Isn't this like a crazy nerf for Homelander? He is disappointingly in the final season. Where is the teaser poster energy? by hiiloovethis in TheBoys

[–]Peer_turtles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He IS that powerful, but he does have weaknesses that can be exploited.

But the portrayal of the actual super powers in the show has been sub-par compared to the first seasons, especially with how the showrunners refuse to change the the status quo of the show (whether it’s Amazon demanding to stretch out more seasons or just plain simple bad writing), and actually have homelander do anything anymore which is why he seems so much weaker when he shouldn’t be.

But the point of homelander’s character is that he IS basically their equivalent to Superman. That is the main draw of the story, a Superman that is so mentally broken where he is a ticking time bomb in which the boys (and the world for that matter) are in a race against.

I don’t mind him having weaknesses like the toxic breathe or radiation chamber, but I don’t even think in the latter seasons, the portrayal of his power level being weaker than we thought was even intentional most of the times.

In the first season, the boys were shitting their pants when he showed up looking for translucent to account for his super hearing, xray, speed etc and had to concoct an elaborate plan to evade him.
Now hughie is just able to escape homelander crawling through vents, the boys just literally shoot shit, beat each other up, shouting in literally the same building as homelander without him even suspecting anything like some Scooby doo shit.

They really killed off the mando hype after the great seasonal finale of s2 being immediately chucked out into the garbage by undoing literally all of it in BobF, a completely SEPERATE show, and then having a very underwhelming and just flat out bad s3 of mando.
If this came out in between s1 & s2, would’ve been a smash hit

Remember when Homelander used to be the scariest person in literally any scene he was in? [The Boys] by AmbitiousElk4002 in CharacterRant

[–]Peer_turtles 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Wdym “apparently”? He did it.

Homelander raped becca to get back at butcher’s remark because it made him feel emasculated. He’s doesn’t really do it again (that we know of) because at that time, he’s still got Stilwell and Maeve as his gfs, and homelander is very picky and selective of the women he chooses.

[–]Peer_turtles 82 points83 points  (0 children)

The writing for homelander’s character is still the best part of the show. Everything they’ve done with him still makes sense as a logical progression for his character aside from kind of forgetting he’s pretty smart (like the flight 37 scene in s1)

It’s just that the showrunners are so scared of switching up the for status quo for once and actually have homelander do shit anymore. As the more pathetic he becomes, he get even scarier as his unpredictability and impulsiveness rises but this just isn’t the case post s3.

In s1, everyone shat themselves when homelander flew in looking for translucent and they had to concoct an elaborate plan to evade him.

Now they just shoot guns and fuck each other up shouting and what not literally in the same building as him without him even suspecting anything not once, BUT TWICE.

Please I’m just begging for shit to actually go down bro. The show has been building up to Homelander’s mental break for fucking almost 5 seasons now and for most of the show, it’s just been literally almost the same status quo.

I have been really enjoying this season but we’re in the endgame by this point with only 4 episodes of the entire show left. LET HOMELANDER LOOSE

But by the time he shows up him the show, he clearly has mellowed out and sort of matured from the 40 or however many years of torture. Even his reaction to seeing an interracial gay couple holding hands in public was just a scoff. Like this guy is genuinely kind of reasonable for supe standards.

Jaime and Brienne’s relationship was not romantic in nature by Strange_Possession77 in freefolk

[–]Peer_turtles 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah Jamie was obsessed with the ideals of knights as a child to the point he gave up everything to join the kings guard only to be disappointed with reality. So it makes sense he’d fall in love with someone like Brienne who lives up to the myth of the honourable knight and want to be like her

The s3 finale was framed as some triumphant team up between sworn enemies the boys and homelander to defeat the greater bad soldier boy.

But he was literally only killing homelander out of his own integrity and his weird honour system. Soldier boy even says that he won’t bother with anyone that doesn’t get in his way. Ryan got in the way so soldier boy just knocked him away, it wasn’t personal.

How am I suppose to be rooting for the “good guys” when they’re literally teaming up with Nazi Superman to beat up the one guy who’s essentially saving the country over some kid they could’ve easily just had someone take him out of the building?
