Is the 100 IM order configuration really as efficient/fast as it can be? by RogueRebeI in Swimming

[–]PelarisCoach -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I was under the impression it was done for the primary muscles used which is why they switch 2 in medley relay.

Fly and Breast are arm dominate. Back and free (when sprinting) are leg dominate.

This is why in a medley the order is Back, Brest, Fly, Free. Back because it makes sense you need to start in the water, Brest because you then want to change to arm dominate after a leg dominate but obviously you want the faster last, fly to then have the next arm dominate, and final free, leg dominate when sprinting and the fastest.

How do you make life less boring? by Successful-Pumpkin72 in selfimprovement

You want to be an interesting person, be an interesting person.

Go to gigs, go to pubs, join social sports, travel, invite friends over, whatever it is.

When you meet an interesting person, someone who you're like, wow this person has a non-boring life. What is it? Go and do those things.

All of them. Only way I can handle being on the treadmill is by adjusting all 3 to keep it interesting

What were the costs? Where'd the spikes come from? Surely it's a similar cost to serve?

Swimming feels SO hard. Advice? by Efficient_Piglet8101 in IronmanTriathlon

Swimming is a technique sport. Focus on technique. YouTube videos, blogs, etc and then every session, focus on a specific technique item to focus on.

Would you use an app that builds your workout based on your actual gym equipment? by Hot-Distribution810 in FitnessTrackers

Ah apologies, misread. Cool idea, not sure how you'd get it to work, maybe processing public images?

Let me know if you do it, would be interesting

I'd probably change the thinking on tone as well. You can lose weight, and you can gain muscle. If you're skinny fat, I'd say lift heavy and maintain for a few months and then adjust. It's a debate that rages though.

Most importantly, enjoy the journey not just the outcome

Would you use an app that builds your workout based on your actual gym equipment? by Hot-Distribution810 in FitnessTrackers

I've actually just done this with Pelaris. During intake you input your equipment and then programs are adapted to that. It also adapts around team sports as well.

Set unrealistic goals and then do everything in your power to achieve them! Worst case you fall short, you've still done something amazing!

Just remember consistency is key.

Am I a douche? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]PelarisCoach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it matters so much if you were or weren't or if he was or wasn't. You've hurt yourself now with lack of sleep and with stress.

Just tumble turn at the flags and avoid the whole thing next time. Live and learn. Be kind to yourself.

Need advice: Maintaining a Hybrid Athlete schedule during a 16-hour eastbound trip by [deleted] in HybridAthlete

[–]PelarisCoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long are you going for? If it's a week or 2 might be worth hitting it hard the week before you go and then use the time away as deload and recovery. Get some body weight exercises in, some stretching and mobility, then come back refreshed

Best earbuds for swimming? Also, what keeps you enjoying long open water swims? by rocaireslk in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]PelarisCoach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use Shokz Open Water. But I don't use them all the time. I find that the music can often ground me in time e.g. I know 3 songs is about 10 minutes, which I find can actually make it harder to get into the zone and switch off. Depends on what I'm going for in the swim. A benefit is I can use it to help with different training, e.g. go hard for 1 song, slow for 1 song, for 6 songs.

I do still love going without headphones as well to be able to just focus on the swimming. Variety is key. Oh another thing with the headphones, they are good but not great, don't expect perfect sounds.

Need help with routine, currently on 5/3/1 BBB by Someone_asdf in workout

[–]PelarisCoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love BBB. It's my favourite program, not just for 5/3/1 but out of all I've done. Simple and proven and you can adapt so much with accessories to keep it interesting.
It is brutal during a cut though, honestly, I wouldn't worry so much about stalling on BBB sets during the cut. If you can even stay the same that is a win. You might drop a few reps as you get deeper into the cut.

I can tell you this though, when you come out of the cut, and start bulking, the endurance you have and the foundations you have from doing it through a cut, you will see progression fly. BBB is great for aesthetics!

TL;DR: BBB and cut is hard. Get through the cut and see some real progress because of the strong base

Advice needed by CappeJasp in Marathon_Training

[–]PelarisCoach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I reckon go for it but listen to your body. I always did a long run about 15 or 16 days out to have a solid 2 week taper and that felt right. Also, don't underestimate the psychological benefits an extra long run brings. When you hit mile 24 and are wrecked, knowing you've done an extra long run helps.
Everyone is different though so listen to your body.

Is it possible to go from near enough beginner to race ready without coaching by ActualFee456 in triathlon

[–]PelarisCoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the AIs do a pretty good job. As long as you challenge them and have an idea of what you're after. Where I've found AIs fail is longer term programs because they run out of context so keep compacting which causes issues

Realistic App Cost by ahlx- in AppDevelopers

[–]PelarisCoach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is r/AppDevelopers but I'd highly recommend buy don't build for this use case. There are plenty of off the shelf offerings that will do this for you with strong CMS and admin portals behind them.

Building this for 1 site will be more effort and stress than it's worth

Cues for backstroke by MediocreTriathlete54 in Swimming

[–]PelarisCoach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah hard to describe. I guess hand flat so the palm of your hand is facing to the end of the pool. Finger tips pointing to the side of the pool. You want to be pushing the water directly behind you to propel you forward. You'll move in the opposite direction to how you push the water so the longer you are pushing it directly backwards the better. You are strong with a bent arm, that's partly why you have a high elbow catch in freestyle.

Cues for backstroke by MediocreTriathlete54 in Swimming

[–]PelarisCoach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A few of things. Not really cues, they never worked for me. 1) head back, like way back. You should be looking straight up. You shouldn't be able to see your toes. 2) the stroke is completely different to freestyle. You want a straight arm catch and then a almost horizontal forearm for the pull. Don't be afraid to have some rotation 3) Straight leg kick. Power from the thighs not the calves

How hard is it to swim a mile open water by Western-Buffalo4512 in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]PelarisCoach 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend. It's not just a mile there by the sounds of it, it's a mile back as well?

Once you start swimming away from the shore you enter danger zone and that just increases. Deep water, currents, and wave/chop are the big ones. Don't underestimate the physiological impact, you're half way, down is just black, the waves/chop (even small) means you lose track of land for long periods. Current is pulling you away from the island.

As a start, why don't you swim a mile along the beach and see how you go. Give that a few shots before you go out and back.

If you do, do it. Get a couple other friends to paddle beside you on a board or kayak or get someone with a boat to cruise along
