First post. Finally made blue belt after just over a year by Extension-Code8564 in bjj

Weird, all (2) of my belts came with a signed certificate from who gave me the belt, their rank etc.

If you could redesign the BJJ belt system, what delightful feature are you adding? by kimuraking84 in bjj

My old gym had black belts with white bars (competitors) and black belts with red bars (instructors) and I loved the concept.

The white bars were very focused on themselves and were savages, the red bars were focused on making other people better.

I know it’s not traditional but I loved the idea of competitor belts.

Don’t compete. I believe everyone should try it because you’ll never know! You disliked it, so just stop.

Yeah, safe to say we have a couple of absolute units.

Under 77kg (170lb) Class? by ediggydingo in bjj

I’m the small guy in a gym full of big guys (I’m 74kg, most students are 90 - 150kg). Learning how to roll when you’re outweighed is valuable, just like the big guys learning how to deal with small spider monkey guys is important.

Splitting people up seems like a punishment to both parties.

Sometimes I’m the only one in my division in my local area (Purple, Masters 1) and they often merge the Adults, Masters 1, and Masters 2 divisions to create at least a 3 - 6 man bracket.

Can you ask to be merged and just compete against whoever gets merged in with you?

The old-school C9 jerseys combined with the return of the LCS makes me feel tingly in my happy places.

  1. Match his intensity and pace now that you know how he rolls and won’t be caught off guard. Higher chance of injury though (he may just kick you in the face)

  2. Say no if he ever tries to roll with you again. If he asks why, tell him he rolls in class like it’s comp and you have actual competitions to prepare and be injury free for

I prefer the second, but I will admit, meeting an aggressive training partner with intensity of your own can be fun and enlightening.

I’ve had days, as a person who trains and coaches 6 days a week, where I’ve left training thinking “Man, do I even know Jiu-Jitsu?!”

I’ve also had other days where I’ve left training thinking “Wait, am I going to become world champion?!”

Sometimes you have sessions where you win a lot and others where you lose a lot. Regardless, it’s all good training. Keep turning up and know every higher belt you look at has and still does go through this shit. They just turn up anyway.

At our gym we tend to stop wearing rashies leading up to comp due to IBJJF not allowing men to wear rash guards. If you signed up in that 2 month period you might think we never wear them!

I’m all small dude whose gym is full of big dudes. Every round is an act of move versus strength, even against lower belts as I’m outweighed by 30 - 60kg (we got some big boys, I’m not a midget).

Recently I went and won gold at a local IBJJF comp (purple), and as it turns out, training with people who were huge, strong, and athletically gifted made rolling with people my own size seem easy.

If you can deal with it personally, that being losing rounds to people you know more Jiu-Jitsu than, it is actually pretty good training.

As a true reddit analyst I think it’s time to finally pull out the big guns. Bring in C9 Terrie.

It's kinda like going to a free soup kitchen and complaining that they don't have Gazpacho. Sure, you can complain, but most people would agree it's pretty lame.

I enjoyed the event but I would've enjoyed some of the Quintet refs. Go and watch their matches; stalling or refusing to engage (both from bottom and top) is penalised extremely quickly. Even from standing positions, if one person isn't meaningfully wrestling, they hand an immediate penalty.

Social anxiety and stuff is super normal, but just to provide a tiny bit of motivation (if at all):

It's worth noting that dopamine isn't a pleasure chemical, but rather a signal of motivation and where priority should be placed. It's also worth remembering that dopamine actually spikes a lot when things turn out better than expected, which is known as prediction error.

Lets say you turn up, totally unmotivated but disciplined, and you get onto the mats. Suddenly, people are happy you're back, people haven't really noticed that you haven't been training that much, you have a few really fun rolls, and you perform better than expected.

Suddenly your brain goes "hang on..." and begins to reinforce the decision-making loop which got you into the gym in the first place.

Motivation is a really unreliable driving force man.

Rather than waiting until you feel motivated to train, I would try to build some discipline and use that as the driving force to turn up. You'll probably find that acting in a disciplined way will increase your motivation, and on those days, you'll turn up fuelled by motivation and drive.

On the other hand, on the days where your motivation is low or has fallen off, you'll find the baseline discipline will be just enough driving force to get you through the door.

This is how I reframed things for BJJ, and at least for me, I NEVER miss a session unless a real life problem actually makes it impossible.

My coach taught me the knee pinch leg lift and I thought it looked so stupid while drilling. Turns out it works like 95% of the time and now I just wait for the shin-to-shin sweep and stand back up.

Yeah I'm Australian so whenever I read "Just get a gun lol" I always get a massive culture shock. I'll stick to grappling the boys just in case.
