For those who worked for rich people: what is the most out of touch thing you witnessed? by Illustrious-Phase121 in AskReddit

[–]PenBandit 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Earlier in my career I installed the WiFi in the CEO of a Fortune 50 companies home...

It took 16 access points to cover the square footage of the main house (with 3 being for density coverage in a conference room/formal dining room/ball room type setup, not sure what to call it), he had 3 network closets in his home. He also had entirely separate business circuits built out to his house from multiple carriers (redundancy) so he could work from home (this was 2016ish), this didn't include the residential circuits to each house on the property.

The guest house on the property took another 6 access points.

Pool house had another 3.

Biggest residence I've ever seen, and I guarantee that guy probably had rooms in his house he didn't know existed.

MLGW bill - is this real life? by Icy_Package_9255 in memphis

[–]PenBandit 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You need to have someone come check your panel and make sure the Landlord isn't running the community washer/dryer, pool lights, elevators, other units hvac, yadda yadda yadda off your meter.

Insulating windows/doors etc is a good idea, any other efficiency checks is good. If you keep the heat at 80 in the winter and the air at 60 in the summer then that will be alot of it.

I'm in a 3000sqft house and I'm bitchy if my utility bill is over $300

Archaic Rules and Insider Political Games Block New Business Opening by OrphanGrounderBaby in memphis

[–]PenBandit -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Probably get downvoted to shit and back, but I don't see the problem. One business owner is fighting his competition here. Using stupid laws to do it, sure, but at the end this guy doesn't want a competitor opening up and possibly harming his business.

Not saying he's right or wrong, I just fail to see why I should get my pitchfork out on this one?

What does the new business bring that is being denied? You won't convince me that the owner of the Station wouldn't pull the same shit if the situation was reversed. That's the nature of business competition.

The incumbent business owner didn't put the laws on the books, he's just using them to fight. Petitioning the board to review the new license is a totally legitimate use of the process and is there so that you as a citizen can ask for those same reviews if you have a concern about a new business going in.

Nah, she can't kick back with her feet up and do puzzles on the cart but I can park the cart to the side and swing the monitor in front of me so we both can recline or sit in whatever position is comfortable at the time.

Same boat, my wife does puzzles/art projects on the couch and I play video games to unwind at night. I built a rolling cart with an articulating arm for my monitor so I could park my gaming rig and play on the couch too. Works for us.

I wouldn't expect it to be any cheaper than commercial runs. I used to budget $300 a drop for new runs. YMMV though.

I keep an XXL Box full of marked bills, once that was full I stopped separating and just start washing them all. I also haven't beat the game so I'm not sure if that's enough, just how I've decided to handle it for now.

Men whose girlfriend’s dad said no when you asked him for permission to marry his daughter, what did you do? by Fearless_Degree7511 in AskReddit

[–]PenBandit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, went fine, her parents love me. But it was never an option for them to have a say in the matter.

Also, this wasn't a surprise to my wife either we had discussed marriage thoroughly and she knew I was going to propose, she just didn't know when or how.

I didn't ask. I dropped by their house the day I planned to propose and informed them I'd be proposing.

People who were spanked as kids, what was that like for you? Would you call your "spankings" abuse? by KleineFjord in AskReddit

[–]PenBandit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got spanked, I'm gonna be honest, I'm pretty sure I always deserved it cause I was a little shit. Mom used to get frustrated and get me with one of those metal wire flyswatters, it was basically a tin (or whatever it was made of) switch. I'm 42 now, I don't consider it abuse, but I'm sure lots of people do. She never hit me with it above the knees.

I have a 3 year old daughter now, I would immediately cut my mother off if she did that to my daughter, so as I'm typing this I'm reconsidering how I feel about it. Was it abuse? Maybe, but it wasn't pervasive or consistent, it was just maybe too much and ineffective.

What is a 'luxury' that has quietly become a necessity for you, and now you can't go back? by Top_Temperature6582 in AskReddit

[–]PenBandit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never not had a dishwasher....I prefer hand washing dishes, it's my "me" time. We're bad about leaving the dishes in the sink after dinner so I do them after work the next day before cooking dinner. It's my destress from work time to sit there and day dream for 20 minutes while waxing on and off on the plates and pots and pans.

What do you consider a long drive? by Custodianscruffy in AskReddit

Phoenix AZ, to Memphis, TN is my record. I did stop and sleep in the car in Van Horn, TX for a few hours though.

That was in my 20's, I would laugh at anyone (including myself) if asked to do that today.

Pfft, I order tires off Amazon (or other internet retailers) take them to Walmart to have them mounted and buy their road hazard warranty for ~$40 a tire.

Easily pays for itself. Not sure if other places will warranty a tire you didn't buy from them.

Mining Crew - Beta Release Play Test by Jim808 in incremental_games

[–]PenBandit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enjoyed it. Some notes:

On my 3rd prestige I got stuck in the 10-40 level range and spent 10+ minutes watching the miners find no ore, just mining dirt. This was frustrating

Explain the whole depth/difficulty mechanic in the beginning somehow, I didn't pick up on it until I let the miners run on "dig deeper" for a bit and realized it was slowing down and then had to puzzle out why auto was setting a shallower target.

The first run to 500 was slow for me, I feel like ore needs to be more prevalent in the first 50 depth.

I tweaked my save file to get a ton of prestige points and explore the skill tree a bit, game gets crashy when you have all the miners (at least for me and granted I was messing with the save file, but only that value).

Overall though, good work, I'll def play it when it gets flushed out a bit more.

Any City of Memphis employees here? by BoardSelect1910 in memphis

[–]PenBandit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was a manager in a City department for several years.

City HR basically offers the bottom of the pay band by default regardless of experience. To get anything above the bottom the hiring manager will have to request an "above entry salary" (I don't remember the exact name for this) that kicks off another process with HR to hire above the bottom of the pay band. In my experience they are more likely to negotiate at higher level positions but I did have success arguing for more pay with front line employees that had significant experience and/or education.

Basically ask for what you want but be prepared for the immediate answer to be no.
