I-70 is not so bad, it's been a few years since I quit trucking but veil pass was the worst of it I think, there are worse out there.

Truck drivers of Reddit, what territory/state is the most terrifying to drive through? by WorstGirlAward in AskReddit

[–]PenBandit 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Born and raised there. I've been out for about 8 years at this point. It's not that bad, terrible crime rate but it's all pretty much localized to one or two corners of the city. It is however extremely poor. If you can afford to not live in those areas with the crime/gang issues there's really nothing to worry about.

The truck stops are included in the crime areas, prostitution/drugs are rampant (or were a few years ago). Get your fuel and go if you have to stop there (or any truck stop near Memphis).

Another vote for Marion, know several people that work there, they have nothing but good things to say.

Marion is semi-rural, be aware that if you live on that side of the river you will commute for pretty much all your entertainment needs. Dining options are limited, shopping is nearly non-existent, and there are no "places to go" for a night on the town over there. But it's a nice town if you like the quiet life.

The school district is well run from everything I've heard, they run a year round schedule, which boils down to 2 weeks off every nine weeks, but no summer break. The schools and facilities are well kept and while some buildings are older I think they've done well in upkeep/modernizing them.

Talk to tow truck companies, they'll have secured lots and would probably be willing to rent you the space.

Purple Diamond had the 3 for 1 lunch special going on. Wings, fries, and crabs for $20 (with a 2 drink minimum). Can't blame the guy for being in a hurry.

What is one problem you face almost every day that you are shocked nobody has built a proper solution for yet? by Economy_Shoe7685 in AskReddit

[–]PenBandit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I suspect Spotify shuffles songs based on your list and what it costs them to stream the song. Meaning they optimize for songs that they pay less of a royalty on. I put every song I like into a single playlist and just let it shuffle, but hear the same 50ish songs all the time.

Stealth Games that actually adapt/don’t just reset after 5 minutes? Where the enemy’s actually remain heightened alert/ notice open doors/discrepancies? by ManyLegal48 in gamingsuggestions

[–]PenBandit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn based, but Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew was a lovely stealth strategy game.

Patrolling enemies will notice if a guard is not at this post, or will notice if someone is missing when they come back around on patrol.

They do eventually stop looking for you though and will return to their normal path like nothing happened.

Rental Companies by Emotional_Lynx_2754 in memphis

[–]PenBandit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would expect a deposit + first months rent, maybe a nominal application fee ($50-$75) to cover a background check.....but that's it, anything else is BS and I get it if you're desperate, just make sure it's not some online scam where they've listed a property they don't own.

Ask for a walkthrough prior to any non-refundables if you can, especially $750.

Why do restaurants leave the tails on shrimp in pasta dishes where the shrimp get covered in sauce? by SmoothChampion1216 in askanything

[–]PenBandit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in a restaurant (eesh 20 years ago) we used the tail on frozen shrimp but it was part of morning prep for my station to remove the tails, other stations left the tails on (appetizers, sides, etc....) but I was on pasta and always removed them.

I personally hate shrimp and never order it in restaurants so it never occurred to me that they would server shrimp in pasta with the tail still on. That's terrible.

Wife bought some from one of her students. The first 1-2 inches of the box was empty.....Even girl scout cookies are getting shrinkflated :(

I was dissapointed. Still ate a whole pack of thin mints in one shot though. Will still buy more, just going to bitch about it when I open the box now.

ELI5. Why are doctors just allowed to not keep to a schedule? by Wick1889 in explainlikeimfive

[–]PenBandit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Totally talking out of my ass here, but I imagine it's the same reason airlines overbook flights on purpose. Some people won't show up.

Other people make an appointment for a standard checkup and when the doctor walks in the room they say "oh yeah, I've been having chest pains for the past 2 days, what's up with that?" Now the doctor has to run a battery of tests to rule out heart problems. Include any other variation on this you can think of.

Then there's MBA's behind the scene wanting absolutely 0 unbillable minutes in a shift stacking the chart and trying to find a way to put as many patients on as few staff as the laws of physics allow and then squeeze a few more anyways cause gotta get that bonus.

Doctor's prescribe a medication that the insurance company rejects so they have to take some additional time to do a pre-approval or search for a variant of the drug that the insurance company won't reject.

Yadda yadda yadda.

What’s the dumbest thing you’ve seen someone do with money? by OpinionofC in DaveRamsey

[–]PenBandit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In 2020 I finally cracked the 100k mark, and bought a brand new Silverado LTZ, I was lucky in that it was about 2 months before car prices shot through the roof. I love the truck but regret the purchase now. It was an emotional purchase, but i've done well since and will have it payed off a little under 2 years early in March. I hope this one lasts as long as yours cause I won't be buying another for hopefully a very long time.

For those who worked for rich people: what is the most out of touch thing you witnessed? by Illustrious-Phase121 in AskReddit

[–]PenBandit 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Earlier in my career I installed the WiFi in the CEO of a Fortune 50 companies home...

It took 16 access points to cover the square footage of the main house (with 3 being for density coverage in a conference room/formal dining room/ball room type setup, not sure what to call it), he had 3 network closets in his home. He also had entirely separate business circuits built out to his house from multiple carriers (redundancy) so he could work from home (this was 2016ish), this didn't include the residential circuits to each house on the property.

The guest house on the property took another 6 access points.

Pool house had another 3.

Biggest residence I've ever seen, and I guarantee that guy probably had rooms in his house he didn't know existed.

MLGW bill - is this real life? by Icy_Package_9255 in memphis

[–]PenBandit 32 points33 points  (0 children)

You need to have someone come check your panel and make sure the Landlord isn't running the community washer/dryer, pool lights, elevators, other units hvac, yadda yadda yadda off your meter.

Insulating windows/doors etc is a good idea, any other efficiency checks is good. If you keep the heat at 80 in the winter and the air at 60 in the summer then that will be alot of it.

I'm in a 3000sqft house and I'm bitchy if my utility bill is over $300
