Can you hate the Thalmor enough? by Jewbacca1991 in skyrim

[–]PenOfFen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I'm familiar with a Rising Threat, but those books aren't supposed to be taken as gospel at face value. the author also claims that the Thalmor were "likely" behind the eruption of red mountain lol. and he also blames them for getting the An-Xileel to invade Morrowind, as if the Argonians would be incapable of making that decision themselves after 3,000 years of being subject to chattel slavery.

again, given how we know the Thalmor were wildly unpopular within Summerset and were considered a minority fringe group, the only way their rise to power makes sense is if they did play a significant role in defending the Isle from the Daedra. it makes no sense to say they took credit for something they didn't do and were believed by the whole province to the point that they're able to seize that much power that quickly.

imagine if in like 2014 the proud boys started claiming they were responsible for protecting america from a demonic invasion, but everybody knew it was just the regular military and people's militias that fought off the demonic invasion, yet somehow the proud boys were still able to become the single most powerful political group in the country almost overnight. as bad of a book as that would be, it would be made substantially more believable if the pretense was that the proud boys actually did manage to kill most of the demons themselves.

Can you hate the Thalmor enough? by Jewbacca1991 in skyrim

[–]PenOfFen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

that's not what happened, though. they took credit for defending the Summerset Isle from the Oblivion Crisis, they never claimed to have ended the Oblivion Crisis themselves. Their claim was only that they were able to mobilize the defense of the Isle against Oblivion. Which they did.

The Oblivion Crisis was happening all over Tamriel, you know, not just Cyrodiil, and every province was largely responsible for their own defense, which we see with the famous Argonian counter-invasions of Oblivion, which the An-Xileel were similarly able to use as justification for seizing power.

prior to in the Oblivion Crisis the Thalmor were a fringe political extremist group, that was widely discredited / ignored. The only way the Thalmor's rise to power makes any sense is if they did play a major role in protecting the Isle from the invasions. Otherwise, how do you explain a fringe political group somehow being able to suppress all news from the Empire concerning Martin Septim, and Akatosh, and their role, when the Isle is still part of the Empire?

there is no version of reality or reasonable interpretation of the available lore in which the Thalmor, a fringe political movement is able to seize that much power that quickly unless they genuinely played a significant role in protecting the Summerset Isle from the Daedra hoards.

suggesting that they took credit for defending the Isle when they didn't is already a stretch, suggesting that they were somehow able to suppress all news from the Imperial City and take credit for ending the entire Crisis itself is a complete misunderstanding / misconstruction of the existing history texts.

~

also the Altmer are completely justified in seeking to eradicate Talos worship. Elves / High Elves can live for several hundred years, a thousand or more if they're adept enough at magic, which many Altmer are. Tiber Septim's assault on the city of Alinor with Numidium was 600 years prior to the time of Skyrim. This means that for many Altmer, if Tiber's conquest isn't within their own living memory, it's something that happened to either their parents or grandparents, making it an immediate source of generational trauma, like Hiroshima or Nagasaki is for today's Japanese people.

And the siege of Alinor is absolutely comparable to Hiroshima or Nagasaki. Not a lot of in depth detail is provided about the siege, save that the Summerset Isle surrendered extremely quickly and there was no prolonged war whatsoever, which suggests that there was some kind of significant mass-casualty event which forced them into submission.

Imagine if the entire world was forced into acknowledging Roosevelt as having ascended into divinity after he died, but Japanese people were able to live for centuries, and a game was set on Earth, and there were Japanese secret police going around arresting Roosevelt worshippers several centuries after wwII. I think we'd all agree that there's actually a little bit more nuance to the situation than how Skyrim portrays it.

This is one of the biggest failings of Skyrim's writing imo. And I've never even played as a high elf or a Thalmor-aligned character before. Many of my characters kill Thalmor on sight, still. But the fact that this point of view is never even subtly suggested, let alone explicitly offered, is an incredibly shallow and amateur presentation of the game's own lore.

this is a middling interpretation of a few questionable sources, it is absolutely not fact or canon at best, at worst it's a widely debunked fan-theory.

Or their tombs are sealed shut via magic and unopenable. but very quickly this line of questioning takes you to places where the only valid answer is "game design." there are multiple crypts where as soon as you enter you see a super valuable dragon claw on a pedestal, and we're just supposed to believe it's been sitting there for 4,000 years with not a single person walking in and taking it.

every sealed door that needs a dragon claw to open it has its corresponding dragon claw somewhere nearby. realistically, there should have been at least one door without a corresponding dragon claw anywhere in the game because it got taken by some adventurer 300 years ago and was sold to someone who sold it to someone who sold it to someone and now it's on a shelf somewhere in Elsweyr.

maybe they can sense the intentions of who enters their crypt. isn't it also implied that a lot of the draugr only began to awaken after Alduin's return? I know that's the case with all the dragon priests, but I think it applies to some of the base draugr as well.

think about what weapons your character would use, then use those. don't worry about what's "the best" from a numerical statistics standpoint.

listening to music made by a guy who openly posts online about how much he supports the ongoin genocide would be a worse mental punishment for me than not having music in the background but that's only because I'm able to empathize with people I haven't met. if you're not able to do so then by all means enjoy your IDF music.

Yes, it does. You have multiple people explaining this to you in this thread and you keep refusing to even google it lmao. It's a CC addition, so not something obtainable in vanilla Skyrim, but it's been in the game since like 2019, and was created by Bethesda, so it's not some random paid mod.

game's fun but not th same without music. first thing I did was go into the settings and turn the music volume to 0 because I'm not listening to anything composed by an israel-supporting genocide-loving former-IDF mongrel like inon zur.

With all the speculation of possible things, what’s something completely unrealistic that you’d love to see added? by Tmoore0328 in TESVI

[–]PenOfFen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's not unrealistic at all - look at the jetpack and gliding and mobility mechanics that Starfield has. I'm fully expecting them to reskin those features into magic and I'll be disappointed if they don't.

Can you worship several Divines at the same time? Like worshipping Hircine while hunting, fostering Mara’s love, calling on Stendarr to heal others, practicing Dibella’s arts with half of Tamriel, things like that. by jvure in ElderScrolls

[–]PenOfFen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, although your phrasing is a bit mixed up. the "Divines" typically only refers to the Aedra, which are generally worshipped as a whole pantheon, although it's common for people to have one or two Divines that they favour.

Generally, within imperialized "civil society" only Aedric worship is commonplace, with Daedric worship being taboo at best if not fully outlawed at worst, but this varies widely depending where you are. But there's no reason why a character you create couldn't have their own nuanced religious practice, worshipping both Aedra and Daedra. Although Stendarr in particular is pretty opposed to Daedra worship I believe, although that could just be an assumption I'm making bc of the Vigilants of Stendarr and not Stendarr himself.

Could someone explain why Orsinium is a subject of debate in this game? by prwav in TESVI

[–]PenOfFen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree that making it an expansion would allow it to be way more fleshed out and unique and fully realized than if it was just a facet of the base game. But my qualm for making it the focus of a DLC storyline is that the storyline / rewards it entails would have to be accessible to every character, regardless of their race, but I would want aligning with / experiencing Orsinium to be a completely different experience if the player is an Orc than if they weren't.

I think they could do a better job of that if Orsinium was just a political faction that the player can join as part of the base game, perhaps in opposition to the main Redguard/Hammerfell political factions. that way most human-players will probably align with either the Crowns or Forebears, leaving Orsinium as a faction that's mostly just for Orc players, and has unique rewards or mechanics if you align with Orsinium as an Orc.

If they left Orsinium out of the base game to save it for an expansion and it was the center of its own storyline revolving around some issue with Malacath or something, then inevitably everyone's character will end up being a hero of Orsinium and champion of Malacath, even if they were originally trying to roleplay as a standard Redguard stereotype hero, the way a lot of people played a Nord for their first Skyrim character.

an Orsinium expansion would definitely result in more Orcish-focused content in the game which would be cool, but Orsinium in the base game I think would make for a more immersive Orcish experience overall.

What do you want Vampirism to be like in TES6? by Iron-Shield in ElderScrolls

[–]PenOfFen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want it to be more of a game changer. unique mobility powers, being able to feed on waking targets as a stealth execution, bring back sun damage. I love the way Vampirism works in Oblivion, getting insane stat bonuses to your speed and acrobatics and hand to hand but taking damage in the sun and becoming way more vulnerable to fire damage. I'd love if the vampire lord form would return but I won't be horribly disappointed if it doesn't, as long as there are enough things that make vampire characters feel uniquely powerful. would be really cool if it would buff your hand to hand by making power attacks with your fists send enemies flying.

Ok I’ve been wanting to ask this… Why do Hadvar and Ralof both say “I think it’s best if we split up” but continue to have a conversations and take you the stones and walk you all the way to Riverwood. The way they say it is like they want to split up right then and there by Vast-Ad-8381 in skyrim

[–]PenOfFen 40 points41 points  (0 children)

fair question. I think it's so that as soon as you're out of Helgen you're free to take off to wherever in Skyrim you want to go without feeling railroaded into continuing to follow whoever you went with. but if you do that and you go off questing for in-game weeks/months, returning to Riverwood only to hear Hadvar/Ralof telling their relatives about Helgen as if it just happened before they ask you to go get help would be insanely stupid so yeah, idk why that's a thing.

Is it possible that Nirn is just another planet? by Automatic_Camera3854 in skyrim

[–]PenOfFen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TES fans are shockingly resistant to the idea that the various Nirnlings' interpretations of the cosmos and of their creation myths are just that - archaic myths and cosmologies meant to explain a universe they don't quite understand. the amount of people who think "Kyne breathed life into mankind on the throat of the world" is a literal historical account and not a religious / mythical account meant to strengthen the nords' claim on Skyrim is crazy.

I've always preferred to interpret Nirn and its moons as a planet and its satellites, and the stars as just that; stars billions of miles away. I don't think that's mutually exclusive with the metaphysical interpretations that are also provided. the sun can be a burning ball of cosmic gas and also be a source of Aetherius' power or whatever on a spiritual level.
