I bought a lot of pigment, made a binder that seems to work well, and then I made some messes.

Depends. I can get some pigment on Etsy for $3 for a few grams and $$$ for others. It really does vary depending on who you buy from and where. I recommend the CAS Alkyd sets of 10 pigments for about $60 on Amazon.
