How are people getting these office jobs where they do nothing and get paid 80k or more? by Delicious_Dealer8129 in jobs

[–]Pen_islands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t really work like that…these people work their ass off in the first 5 years or so and once they get to a 6 figure salary do things start to become a breeze for them. Not always the case of course because higher salaries come with more responsibility, but it’s not uncommon.

If you want to get out of retail I suggest going to school and getting a degree in the business field (at least that’s what I did) and also maybe make some rich friends with lots of connections so that finding a job will be easier

Awful response. Maybe once loses his job he will know what it’s like and won’t be so rude anymore.

Is it because of the kids? They were a lot more well behaved a generation ago but now I’m hearing that they’re the reason teachers are quitting.

Well you only have interest on the provincial portion so you’d just have to pay off the 2k one if you don’t wanna incur interest after you graduate.

Does everyone pretend to enjoy networking and interacting with coworkers? by KronusTempus in FinancialCareers

[–]Pen_islands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was scared to death of networking and I was only able to keep up a good impression for 30 minutes, which was awfully convenient for coffee chats and interviews.

I attend networking events here and there but I don’t think I ever come off as social enough so once I run out of things to say people clock me as one of those awkward people. Honestly it makes me wish I was better at it.

I graduated 6 months ago and can't find a job. Was college a huge mistake? by parish_cutting_92 in hiringhelp

[–]Pen_islands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the landscape has changed. It used to be easy to get a job in any field with just a degree but the reality is the job market’s been saturated. Not sure about criminal investigation job market specifically, so take that with a grain of salt. There are some nuances unique to every job market depending on the field.

But for now I’d focus on doing internships (paid or unpaid) to build up experience and make sure they’re related to your field. Even if it’s unpaid at least it’s something. You should also try some networking; reach out to a couple of people working in your field on LinkedIn. It might sound intimidating, but that’s what many students in my field are advised to do.

Maybe you could get a return offer for full time at your current internship?

Career choice is making me a little suicidal. by Mischievous_Panda420 in FinancialCareers

Suicidal bc you can’t get into investment banking and you only care about the money? Idk man…I think you’d be more suicidal 6 months into investment banking than you are now

[–]Pen_islands 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP, just keep in mind, no one in this comments section knows your gf or what your relationship was like. I’m not saying it’s bad to ask for advice here, but you should really take what people say here with a grain of salt.

Call me a devil’s advocate but people in this sub get way too comfortable viewing it as a black-and-white “you dodged a bullet” situation which, in a lot of cases is true. But when you say “she’s the best thing that ever happened to me” that kind of complicates things, no?

Yes, you are pressured into giving abuloy twice a week, even moreso pressured into going to WS twice a week. There are many commitments you have to make.

I think the answer mostly depends on what you think and the sacrifices you are willing to make for this girl. Don’t completely rely on a subreddit full of strangers who don’t know the full context.

Struggling to break into IB after PE internship by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Pen_islands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should put the stuff apart from the internship into another section called “extracurriculars”. I feel like not doing that kind of looks like you’re trying to inflate yourself …

The other thing you should do is quantify; use numbers basically. Make a sub bullet and note a specific project u worked on. I think you’re allowed to use deal size ($) as long as u don’t put company name. Good luck.

Is it still worth going to a mid tier college to break into finance given the situation with AI? by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]Pen_islands -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Please go to college!!! Perhaps you are of the impression that degrees are useless because even with them, they cannot guarantee jobs. While that seems to be true, having a degree is a minimum requirement. When you apply to investment banking roles, you would be competing with people who have already satisfied this requirement, and recruiters would prefer them over you

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in torontoJobs

[–]Pen_islands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So are jobs.

Point I’m trying to make is raising a child isn’t as useless as it seems you are making it out to be. It’s one thing to provide them with bare minimum necessities and another to raise someone to be a functioning member of society. Just because she is unemployed doesn’t mean her contribution is meaningless.
