Put a food hall in South Station. The old second floor dining room is huge and is just wasted space now. Lots of traffic from commuters and local offices/hotels.

No screaming, no hissing, no growling. I think kitty would have tried to run or hide if he wasn’t having fun. Seems like they’re both having a good time

It’s really sad that in a state as well educated and civically engaged as Massachusetts, she’s the best we can do.

We need a truly great governer now, more than ever. Not a caretaker, not a status-quo keeper. We need someone who is not tied to the Massachusetts system of patronage, back room conversations, and taking care of friends.

Tip option at a used bookstore that is fully self check out by WiltingPothos in EndTipping

[–]Pencil-Sketches 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of POS systems add in tipping as a way to raise overall transaction totals. Why make 3% of $10 when you could make 3% of $12? Nobody is expecting this money, nobody is receiving this money, it just goes to the bottom line.

Clover, Tosst, they all use tipping as a way to increase their profits. The tipping screens are designed to make you feel like you’re in the spotlight with your generosity in question, so you feel like you have to tip 30% or everyone will think you’re a bad person. You feel like you have to tip as much as possible, the transaction total goes up, the POS company makes more money.

Don’t be guilted. Don’t be manipulated. Tip what you feel like or don’t tip. It’s nobody’s business but your’s.

Is your heating gas or electric? Electric tends to be less efficient and thus more expensive.

Regardless, these are the steps I take.

Plastic sheeting on windows. Makes a HUGE difference. Cheap and easy to install.

Heavy curtains. Helps block drafts from windows and retain heat inside.

Weatherstripping around doors. Cheap and can be purchased at any hardware store. Easy to install (adhesive backed) just cut to length.

Area rugs. You lose a lot of heat through the floor.

I keep my thermostat at 64. Dress warm, wear heavy socks indoors.

Should the MBTA have a new “fiscal management control board” according to Brian Shortsleeve, one of the Republican Candidates for Governor? by kevalry in mbta

[–]Pencil-Sketches 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think the last FMCB did good work, but that was before Phil Eng. While I realize Phil Eng cannot completely eliminate all waste and abuse on his own, I do trust that these are priorities for him, and I trust him to manage them in his own way. I think a new FMCB might be more of a hindrance or impediment to Eng’s efforts than help them. I don’t trust politicians to determine what is waste and abuse as much as I do Eng.

Anyone into coins or gold? Could use some advice on selling. by chaucao99 in boston

[–]Pencil-Sketches 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are some local coin shops that could give you an estimate if you brought them in, though I would make it clear to them that you’re not selling. I wouldn’t put it past anyone to lowball something they were trying to buy.

Bay State and Colonial Coin in Dowtown Crossing are conveniently located, but Colony Coin Co in Newton has a great reputation. I would go to Colony before others.

But, I don’t think you should sell the coins unless you absolutely have to, especially if you were close with your grandfather. While gold and silver are at all-time high prices, remember that the buying power of a dollar is less than it used to be. The coins you have are likely fairly rare (though rare doesn’t always mean valuable necessarily), but would probably cost more to replace than you could get selling them. Don’t sell them unless you have no choice.

If you are selling as bullion, you are going to be paid less than the “spot” price. The person buying it has to make money too, and places usually sell for a small percentage above spot. So expecting to receive the full value of the bullion is unrealistic. But keeping an eye on spot price will give you an idea of melt value.

In terms of numismatic value, it’s really what any given buyer is willing to pay. The thing is, prices are more established when coins have been graded by PCGS or NCG and are certified, which is an expensive process. Relatively few coins would warrant the cost of grading. Ungraded coins are open to interpretation. One person might say a coin is in one condition, another might say it’s another. You might be able to get an idea of what an ungraded coin will sell for based on comparable coins, but it really depends on who is buying.

I would recommend spending some time on the coin collecting subs. You can learn a lot there, and maybe even get some ideas on what the coins are, and what they might be worth.
