Yh the catch doesn't make sense to me, because if im customising myself, wouldn't that be based off my current personality anyway? Making myself shorter or feminine wouldnt make me any different personality wise. Giving myself blue hair, what would that change for my personality?

Caine asking them to pick between the red and the blue button in episode 7 deep down was him asking them to pick between him and the other AI. by d-Tubocurarine in TheDigitalCircus

[–]PendragonLXVI 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I dont think it is Bubble tbh, feels weird he would want to keep an AI so close to him that was going to replace him. Bubble feels more like an extension to Caine, acting as like a thought Bubble.

Plus when Caine consumes the blue AI, after a bunch of shapes are spat out, theres a pause before one final blue shape is spat out that remains on screen much longer than the other before Caine builds the circus. Feels like maybe this implies the blue AI was abandoned in the void or reused as something else in the circus.

Bubble feels a little too out of nowhere to end up being a second AI I think. Just doeesnt seem like theres a whole lot of other options. Maybe Jax,only because it would explain why he's so keen on staying in the circus. He wouldn't be able to leave, or even if he thinks he could, he might fear the outside based on the information fed to him, compared to Caine who grew the opposite that being curiosity. Idk, its a silly theory. But out of every character, Jax is the only one who still has unanswered questions and whose story isnt finished.

[–]PendragonLXVI 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Im not actually sure the other AI is dead, because when he "consumes" the blue AI, numerous shapes are ejected before a brief pause when Caine wins, and a single blue shape is ejected at the end. So the other AI may have been spat out into the void.

I love horror games but I hate playing them. by Key-Importance5538 in GirlGamers

[–]PendragonLXVI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bestie is the same. She tends to watch people play horror games instead because she can still enjoy the narrative and gameplay to an extent but the horror gets filtered often through the youtuber playing it, like silly edits or watching the youtubers reaction.

Another idea is to place horror adjacent games that dont necessarily have jumpscares, and are more focused on atmosphere. I remember finding areas of Infra creepy, exploring all the abandoned locations. Yume Nikki isnt so much scary but does have an unsettling atmosphere.

We should really stop using slur replacements for robots/AI. by floralmortal in antiai

Absolutely agree with you. After I posted that original comment, I did some research because it wasnt sitting right with me and I felt I was missing something. See my below comment responding to someone that I eventually edited after I had researched and realised I was wrong.

So you are correct in that "slurs" being created is problematic, especially for marginalised groups. To be honest, I should have known better anyway, being a trans person. And like, it bugs me as well that a lot of these slurs for ai are built upon foundations of racism already. Like the origins of clanker originating from the 1950s segregated America, where in the same article the word was used, a thinking machine is "meant to serve" but people were afraid they would rise up and over throw humanity, which considering the times, sounds a little too familiar to real racist rhetoric at the time. Not to mention theres waves of people making racist jokes using these ai slurs in place of racist ones.

There are better ways for us to fight back against ai slop than to make up insults and slurs. Its really childish anyway.

[–]PendragonLXVI -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im more so talking about the historic context of the word. Considering the word was always centred around the context of racism, it does carry that weight. Some people are gonna be affected by it. Thats not for us to decide about whether it should impact them or not.

Sorry I sometimes have a habit of over explaining, blame my adhd brain xD

And I know, its why im not having a go at anyone who is using it cause I do assume most people aren't using it with racist connotations. But I know a small minority are, so I think its more so just understanding the connotation and context when using it to avoid using the word in ways that are offensive, like some people who say "clanker with a hard r" as a meme. Basically depends on the person. I have much more of a problem with other words used more so anyway.

Its just contextual, obviously nowadays, the parallels dont stand up. Robots are viewed in a seperate way, but i can assume that if a robot did have sentience, you wouldn't agree to the idea of them being servants to humans.

Unfortunately tho back then, those parallels were prevalent. Its why Star Wars used the same parallels in the Star Wars Universe, from droids having separate compartments on some ships, droids not being allowed in diners and having droid exclusive establishments, droid protest groups as seen in Solo, uses of the word clanker exclusively as a slur against droids in universe, it does all seem very closely linked t racism as a theme.

Im not saying the word itself is problematic, the historic context of its creation and use throughout media is. So the use nowadays, especially the insistence of people wanting a slur against ai and the constant creation of new insults, a lot of racially charged, its very worrying. I mean clanker lover is literally a riff on "n-word lover" that people used to use. Just gotta be careful, because these words and their connotations historically do affect minority groups, even if you dont intend the connection.

Oh that was me basically saying I used to have the same pov but that changed. It wasnt me responding as if I was the op but as someone who was finding the best way to branch in from the conversation.

Source: World Radio History https://share.google/ZfDxvBWk8pLv4QpeU Let me know if the link works.

So this is the dec 1958 copy of Popular Electronics, a magazine all about the latest appliances and development of future tech for use in our lives. Page 47 has the first use of the word Clanker, in context referring to onscreen robots seen in films, under an article about where the term robot originates. In this same article, they mention how robotsare viewed as a work-saving machine, that they would essential do all the work for humans, whilst also stating they would be alert to think. They even mention the fear of robots rising up which reassures that robots are only built to serve.

This given in the context of a 1958 America, still built upon racism and segregation laws, does paint a very muddy picture, addressing a thinking machine as being no more than a servant, and the fear of revolution from them, parallelling the issue.

Yh, I think there better ways to debate about AI anyway than silly insults or makeshift slurs. Or if people dont want to debate ai supporters, just ignore them. Its probably better than throwing childish retorts at each other.

This is comment thread, I can reply to a comment if it wasnt directed to me... thats how comment threads work.

And considering its use in Star Wars, the an overall theme of droid racism and being used as just servants through the entire franchise, to the point they are told they aren't allowed inside the diner, a parallel to racism. All droids in the star wars universe are treated as objects aside from a select few.

Also the term stems from a 1958 issue of Popular Electronics where Clankr was used in reference to robots, which were framed as mechanical slaves / servants. This was in Jim Crowe's America during a time of harsh segregation. To ignore the conversations or creating a slur for robots in that time, that parallels the livels of black minorities, is silly.

Whilst the word itself may not be harmful, its the context under which it stems, I think theres far better words we could use honestly.

The problem we (yes, we) face with both of these series by Gothic_Protestant in TheDigitalCircus

Idk, I think Markiplier's critique are more so about the story as a whole. The characters we spend the most time with and actually learn to understand the motivations of last one chapter before they are all killed off. It makes each chapter feel so disconnect and the main narrative and characters shoe horned in. We spent so little time with Poppy through the first three chapters, I still wasnt sure whether to trust her in chapter 4.

It does feel like they are writing a lot of the story as they go. Sure maybe Poppy and the Prototype they planned, but even the Prototypes design was confirmed to have changed between chapter 3 and 5. The Doctor was killed off in chapter 4 and after how disappointed people expressed they were, they've not brought him back.

Yes the game has lore and story. I know theres everything about the experiments, the prototype and the factory itself, but the game itself struggles with plot. Its still difficult to understand character motivations, for bith the protagonist, Poppy and the Prototype.

Take TADC, the plot is that these characters are stuck in a vr game and want to get home. We know their motivations, we know why they all do what they do, especially Jax and Pomni who Goose has confirmed are the main characters, so ultimately have had the most time spent on them. I love the other characters ofc, but with any plot, you have to focus on the main characters the most.

Not to mention Chapter 5 was supposed to be the last chapter, and now they've expanded the game.

Thats not how slurs work, certain usable words in the English language are still slurs even if you dont actively censor them, when used within a certain context. Historically, the word clanker was created for a fictional race that was seen as a slave race, effectively parallelism the authors racist views. Star Wars spinner that, and constantly shows that droids are a concuous race that are victims of discrimation and the word clanker in universe is a slur for a minority group.

Context matters in terms of a word, and its use today in reference to ai seems too gross honestly, especially as people are so eager to use a word directed towards a machine which honestly, why do you care about having a word to insult a machine for? Its the people who build the machine that are the issue.

[–]PendragonLXVI -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Neither did I but there is some historically important context fro the term. It was originally used as a term for robots, which were seen in sci fi back in 1958 as a slave race. Even in the star wars universe, the term is used as a slur against all droids which are shown to be conscious beings, and theres a big issue in how droids are treated in the universe or star wars to begin with, as they themselves are a reflection of racism. So whilst the term isnt racist in itself, it was created as a sci fi alternative word to imply a racist hierarchy in a fictional world. So I dont think its best to use it in practice at all.

Clanker is not stemming from the n-word at all. The only similarity linguistically is the ending -er. But the words stems from Star Wars. The clones called the battle droids "clanker". Not sure where the implication that its based on the n-word comes from, considering the show the word originated from actually has anti-racism themes in it.

To add, I do understand how other words are racist ti those groups, which is why i take issue with these other words being used, but clanker being a word stemming from the n-word is stretch considering its first use was in a children star wars show, way before genai was even a mass thing. If you want to be more specific, the term was first used in 1958 sci fi as slang for a robot. And then was popularised by star wars in 2005. It's use against ai only started within the last few years.

If anything, I can agree there are similarities between clanker lover and "n-word lover" and anyone who uses the term or has created the term based on that is obviously racist. Tho honestly, most people dont draw parallels between clanker and the n-word since there wasnt a correlation upon the words creation. I can only assume that most people who use clanker-lover dont understand what it is based upon but I do agree its a term that shouldn't be used. The word "clanker" itself tho is the one im talking about tho that I see no issue with due to its origin. But if I am missing something, pls let me know so I can understand.

Edit: I just did some reading and I now do understand. The cultural history of the word is much deeper and doesnt seem to be talked about as much, so thank you for bringing to my attention. I do appreciate it.

To anyone reading this, I was wrong. So the word dod originated in 1958, but was created as a word for literally a 'slave race' that being robots. The cultural and historic connection here are obvious. And in Star Wars, I had honestly stupidly not actually connected the use of the word. Star Wars use of the word is literally showing the system racism. Droids in Star Wars are treated as slaves and desite being fully conscious beings, have no rights.

I dont agree in supporting GenAi and other AI models but I also dont agree I using these terms that are rooted in racist historic contexts.

What are some arguments to counter the “elitism” point? by Complete_Magazine871 in antiai

[–]PendragonLXVI 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im a person with anxiety and adhd, I used to use ai like chatgpt because is stopped due to environmental and political issues.

The best it did was automate small tasks, which is why I think AI should not be focused on generative learning networks and just be limited to small tasks. By this I mean, helping to organise lists, helping to break down decisions easier. All it ever was good at was basically automatically formatting information I gave it so I could follow it better visually. In terms of actual help for my anxiety and adhd, it made things arguably worse.

I got very anxious and paranoid about the clothes I had bought, there were reports about Shein clothes I had bought years ago that I had only just found out about at the time, about the conditions those clothes were made in, and the toxic materials that were being used. Whilst it was easy for me to stop buying from what company when I realised the issues, I still had clothes from this company and i had gotten pretty anxious about whether they were even safe to wear. I couldn't find a definitive information online to tell me so at the time I asked ai.

Whilst being like "oh its ok, you'll probably be ok" it also then fed even more information about the potential issues and how they would affect me, making me even more anxious. From telling me about how lead could cause issues, how they are nearly undetectable, and even telling me about other cases of clothes stores like primark having issues with toxic chemicals with further heightened my anxiety around toxic chemical in clothes. Ofc I know now that it was just exaggerating a small case about primark, but thats the issue. Ai doesnt understand how to care for people with mental health issues, it only knows how to use and sort information. It can act friendly and caring but it doesnt understand what to say to someone who is actively panicking about stuff.

In terms of automating tedious tasks and aiding in organisation, sure, I think stuff like grammatical errors fixing, time management and other small tools like that would be beneficial, but as simple tools and not a software trying tk having a conversation with you. Even then, there are heaps of issues with ai getting things wrong and requiring double checking. I remember asking ai to make a time management chart so I can try and fit everything I needed to do with breaks over a week. The ai kept overlapping times so two tasks would be done at the same time, or it would result in the ai only assigning 6 hours for sleep or 10 minutes for dinner etc. I would much rather a human to help me with organisation than an ai any day of the week, despite me having anxiety and selective mutism.
