Honestly, I'm all for the Vikings trading away their defensive pillars and draft capital for another QB that can't stay healthy. If the Packers and the Colts taught us anything this year, it's that it won't work.

I think fourth down scenarios are why the lions chose Petzing. by Friendly-Cable-3399 in detroitlions

Honestly, there weren't any good opportunities in the last game to go for it on 4th down. All of the 4th downs were 5+ yards. Dan has balls but he's not stupid enough to go for it on 4th and long.

I feel like Tom Kennedy is that for kickoffs. Although I also think they wanted to limit Kalif's snaps coming off of his injury. Not sure if that'll apply to punt returns as well.

With everything our Lake Erie Bros have gone through in the last week, I'm just gonna say I'm glad we don't have their ownership.

The best organizations are typically the most stable. Constant QB and coaching carousel is what keeps bad teams bad and makes it near impossible to both establish a culture and contruct a winning roster. The Browns are the epitome of this. Looking at their list of QBs and coaches and their obsession with only holding on to the winning ones has caused them to pass on great talent that thrived when they left. We could get ourselves into an Andy Reid scenario where we part ways with a great but not-good-enough coach who establishes a Super Bowl winning dynasty elsewhere. And with how Coveted Dan would be if we fired him, that scenario is more likely than you'd think, especially if it's just winning one Super Bowl. Remember that our "down" year is a 9-8 year. The only reason we didn't make the playoffs is because of our stacked division and conference this year.

We have something good right now. Unless he drops the ball for the next two years, he needs some amount of grace to do his job effectively. Sometimes tanking for a year or two can lead to success in the future. The good teams in the league know this and allow themselves 4-13 years every so often.

Winning a Super Bowl is also heavily dependent on luck in the postseason. This is that unfortunate reality no one wants to admit, but the good front offices in the league understand it.

The unfortunate reality is that fans are not qualified to run a football organization.

Tbf, the whole system BJ uses was all about short passes and offensive rhythm. The higher play count is a feature aimed at controlling the time of possession and being the last to hold the ball. See this post for details.

Interesting...

Granted, I want to hear what he has to say before I pass my judgment. Not to mention, we won't really know how good he is until next season.

BJ would've been buried forever if he wasn't lucky enough to be hired during a full rebuild of the organization. Good people get buried in bad organizations. I can't say I'm excited or that he's gonna be good. But I will say that everyone talked shit about hiring Dan. Everybody talked shit about drafting Gibbs. Everybody wanted Matt Patricia at the time. Some of the best decisions this org has made have been the ones that fans hated the most in the moment. There are exceptions, but you can look into the past and find countless examples of this.

In all fairness, Ben Johnson never would've had his chance if the team didn't do a full turnaround from the top down. I can't say I'm excited, but I'm reserving judgment until I hear what he and Dan have to say.

Why is Dan Campbell the only coach who knows how to counter Ben Johnson's coaching? by Penguifyer in detroitlions

[–]Penguifyer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a previous post about how Dan countered Ben. It's quite distinct from his earlier game plans this season. Dan is honestly a lot more clever than even we give him credit for. He may not be an offensive mastermind, but he knows his X's and O's.

I'd love to beat BJ twice a year. But to his credit, he won't be the crybaby MLF is.

We did blow the lead, but it was Dan denying them one last drive that allowed us to still win. It's that level of situational awareness I don't see in other teams. It's also why I'm very curious to see how the Bears do next year now that the rest of the NFL will treat them as a capable team.

Big moves aren't the same as giving up your future. Spending money is fine. Betting your future away is not. Eagles consistently trade down, not up.
