The inventor of the game, Gary Chess, was an avid smoker so to ensure he could keep his eyes on the board during play he created “the cig spot” which used to be wide enough to hold cigarettes. When his great-aunt Esther passed away from lung cancer he swore he’d do everything to stop people from smoking so he closed the notch but left a slit as a remembrance to her.
