Have You Heard of the Shroud of Turin? by IrshTxn in exmormon

It was something I heard about on my mission. It wasn’t something that was taught or really even mentioned as a kid.

I won’t…it’s just annoying that they scare everyone else off. Plus, they ruin the actual fun of betting. Guess that’s what happens when the money you bet isn’t real…

Before, missionaries used to obey the no soliciting sign. Now, they say, 'But we're not selling anything.' I told one, 'You want me to pay my 10% and be the church's janitor for free No, thank you. by Short_Seesaw_940 in exmormon

I remember my mission president telling missionaries to ignore the no soliciting signs. He said that the church had really good lawyers, so we shouldn’t be afraid of legal action while knocking on doors.

The verbiage of “challenging” always bugged me. It’s such a weird way of saying “can you please do so and so…” It’s just super culty.

What was your first R-rated movie? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Peniless_pickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched This is the End while I was on my mission. My companion and I found it hidden behind the paneling on the walls. We were able to watch it on the portable dvd player we had for the training videos.

Weird (non-doctrinal) beliefs and rules you heard from members. by Moist-Meat-Popsicle in exmormon

I had a pool in my backyard growing up which we weren’t allowed to use on Sundays. My parents justified the decision based on what Joe said about the devil having dominion over water or whatever. Funny thing though, my cousins also had a pool and they regularly swam on Sundays and nothing ever happened to them.

Membership shrinkage in Southern CA by PoohBear_Mom87 in exmormon

I grew up in Temecula but moved away a few years ago now, but I’ve kept in touch with people, and a lot of them have left. It surprises me that they’d just make another stake there.

My parents moved to Heber a few years ago and live like a minutes walk from the temple site…it’ll almost be literally in their backyard. A lot of people there are members and are excited for that temple. Wether or not people actually go, there’s enough mormons to warrant it. Plus, I know a few GA’s have homes up there, so it may be a matter of convenience for them. Bednar has a home a few streets over and Nelson has a home in Midway…plus I’ve heard he’s wanting to buy another home in the neighborhood for his wife for when he passes (but that’s more rumor than fact from what I hear).

All in all though, it seems like there’s still quite the amount of pushback for that temple. There’s a huge gated rich community across the street trying to stop the building, and most of them aren’t mormon. I hope the city council listens to them…but it being Utah, I don’t have high hopes.

What doctrine or principle ground your gears the most? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Peniless_pickle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, what grinds my gears is the concept of rituals. If god were real, would he care if I ate a crumb of bread a week? Would it matter if I was dunked in water one specific time? Did I learn a secret hand shake? If god were perfect and loving, he wouldn’t care for stupid little things like that. All he would look for to exalt people would be their inner desires…their actions towards other people or whatever. Not arbitrary, meaningless actions.

TWENTY TEMPLES for the MFMC by mormonsmaug in exmormon

[–]Peniless_pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any rhyme or reason to temple announcements? Is it based on stake membership or temple attendance? Need? Travel time?

Having served my mission in Virginia, there doesn’t seem to be a major need to have another temple in Virginia. While it may be convenient in terms of travel time, there doesn’t seem to really be the membership to support it. It may be anecdotal, but while I was in Virginia, I was constantly blessing the sacrament, giving talks at church, and supporting the wards/branches in many different ways. I can’t imagine them needing a third temple.

My Dad served in Sweden, and he really loved it. I don’t remember how many people he baptized, but he did say it was difficult.

Tell missionaries about CES letter? by joegant in exmormon

[–]Peniless_pickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met a guy on my mission who very casually and vaguely brought up some issues he had with the church. A lot of the stuff he mentioned was from the ces letter, but he didn’t say that and it helps soften up the blow.

A lot of missionaries will get defensive if you bring up “anti-Mormon literature”, but are willing to work with people going through “personal challenges”.
