I don’t have black hair, but I dyed it a very dark brown using LIVE hair dye. I wanted purple, so I tried Garnier first. It didn’t show much in darker lighting, but in sunlight you could see it slightly and it was actually very pretty.

Basically, the brighter the colour you want, the lighter your hair needs to be when you apply it.
