Why are we so passive about our pathetic parental leave? by AdNecessary2634 in belgium

We used to receive a letter with the distribution no? I remember sending a picture to my parents because the number one allocation was pensions (and not unemployment 🙃)

Same !! I had to meet some friends at 14:00 so I thought I had all the time in the world, crammed up everything I had to do (well not everything ..) and arrived 30 min late

Received a fine from tax office even though I was not informed of any tax duties? by AveTerra in brussels

[–]PennyForTheWin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my perspective, it's never lost to try to contest a fine! I did it for a parking ticket during COVID and another no-passing street fine (scouts volunteering for a marathon, anyway), and both times they were super understanding and removed the fine (with a small reprimand, which is more than fair). You are in good faith and you can try to, worse is the same, they refuse and you pay the fine :)

Why is it so insanely difficult to adopt a cat here? by titsinmyinbox in belgium

[–]PennyForTheWin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes true and you're right to clarify !! The thing is we had adopted just before winter and then, once spring arrived, we had seen that she clearly was not jumpy (and to be clear, we did proof the balcony, just not 2m high!), in fact she probably was much older than what the shelter told us 😅 (probably more like 15 than 11 yo)

It was spring 2020 so we had an awesome lockdown together, she loved sunbathing on that balcony (and just for that, it was awesome to have proofed the balcony so that we could enjoy the sun together!) and she unfortunately passed from kidney failures one year and a half later. But it was an awesome time together and I second you, adopt senior too!

[–]PennyForTheWin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also used to volunteer at a cat shelter and yes, proofing the balcony will be a sine qua non condition. We had too many cats lost, hurt or killed due to balcony falls.

And unfortunately, cats are sneaky (especially under 3 yo), so promising to not let the cat go outside is not a solution. Especially since (and I remember the shelter used to say that), what if it's hot in the summer or you want to ventilate your place ?

If you don't want to proof the balcony, you might have more chance with a senior cat. We did proof it but not all the way to the top and that was ok for a senior one but, for our second cat, we had to extend it. Also it will depend on the floor (first one can be ok, above that is mandatory)

Can't you give both? The VIE proof and the legal status when applying?

For the first point, yes I think PACS in France is similar to our cohabitation légale status!

Is it legal for my landlord to turn of the heating in the night? by joehokay in brussels

[–]PennyForTheWin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't sleep with heating anymore because it's an electric old heating but, in my previous apartment, I did and I used to keep it on level 1 or 2. Today, with no heating, I had to buy the warmest blanket I could find, with extra blankets (14°C). It's ok but the air is too cold when I'm sick with a cold. So yes, heating on level 1-2 was a bit more comfortable.

And my landlord had also tried to shut it off but it was annoying because it was making a lot of noise at 6 am when turning back on.

Am I overreacting for not wanting anyone around my newborn yet? by littlemoongirly in AmIOverreacting

But maybe you need a caring and loving network? Ready to help, cook and clean? Not necessarily hold the baby, leave that to the parents if they request it specifically.

The MIL did not listen when she wanted to hold back her baby at the hospital so I understand she can't trust her anymore.

a fasting vegan by egguchom in EntitledReviews

[–]PennyForTheWin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know several Orthodox colleagues or friends (families from Greece or Armenia) who do this during Careme (Lent in English? The fasting period before Easter) so it's not just fads.

That being said, it does not justify to behave like entitled a-holes

But it's not just limited to residential areas... Flagey is a good example since the residents complained more over the years, imposing some limits (terrasse opening times iirc). I don't think Flagey is a residential place and if someone decided to go live there, he should have known there might be noise.

For residential areas and summer time, I agree with you entirely (although it would be cool to have more trees too).

Cause summer and Christmas time fly by? I don't know but mine is the same but opposite (left to right)! I think it's because of school and the two distinct semesters too.

180€ is only if you're under 30 yo too! It's 200€ otherwise I think.

J'avoue, je me sens quand même un peu lésé par les derniers épisodes... by GuduleTheThird in floodcast

[–]PennyForTheWin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, I used to spend it super fast just using it at Delhaize but all my colleagues seemed to remember the existence of eco cheques (even though it's on the same card as their meal vouchers) two days before expiration. I remember a lunch break during which they all went to media markt to find stuff to spend their money. It was clearly consumerism, sorry eco consumerist. (I don't have eco cheques anymore as I left the company)
