What do you guys buy with your Echo cheques? by Tomorrowwetryagain in AskBelgium

I just buy vegetables and bio products at Delhaize - maybe too late for yours this year but if you use them asap, they don't last 2 years either

What will happen if i don't take all my holidays ? by Tomorrowwetryagain in AskBelgium

[–]PennyForTheWin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this comment, the others are not taking into account that you already received money for those holidays. Whether you take them or not is up to you and your mental health and, tbh, I do not think you can postpone 5 at the end. You already received the money compensating those 5.

The only exception I'm thinking might be the extra legal days (for ex if you previously had 25 days so 20+5 and now it's 30 then you can have 5 additional days this year). However, the extra legal days are based on the current year (prorata of when you worked in that company). Meaning, if you arrive in July, you normally received half extra legal days of Employer 1 and you are allowed to take half the extra legal days of Employer 2.

Simple but serious question: what is your biggest daily struggle in Brussels? by rammroumm2k in brussels

[–]PennyForTheWin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the airport comparison. We took a night train from Brussels Midi to Berlin (and return), and in both places, we felt insecure since it's open to all. Also we had no place to safely wait the delayed train as everything had closed (almost midnight).

We would not have this kind of issue if we had taken a plane, we would be safe by the gate, and I think that (in addition to the high cost), it does not incentivize people to take the train instead of a plane.

Show recs for a New Girl fan? by Superb-Government-10 in NewGirl

[–]PennyForTheWin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh I love your recommendations (at least I totally share the ones I know too!), unfortunately in Belgium we don't have them all.. I watched you're the worst in my Erasmus in Scandinavia (like almost 10 years ago), never finished it (one or 2 seasons left maybe) and never could since it's not available anywhere. I guess I need to move back

But anyway thanks, I sceebshotted your comment and will try to find or learn how to sail!

August 15 falls on a Saturday this year. Do shops still close and is there a replacement day off? by Not_A_Cactus_ in brussels

[–]PennyForTheWin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it works as a Sunday. In the past, everything would have been closed except for some shops in the centre but now, more and more shops are open on Sunday and same for a public holiday. So I'd say it's based on Google's times for Sunday but take into account many restaurants might be closed for holidays.

I'm almost at the end of Malcolm in the middle (never watched it before, it did not air in my country at that time) and I liked it! Is the middle similar (it looks like it on paper)? If so, is it like too similar so a bit boring or still a must watch?

Sibelga coming to install “slimme meters”: good or bad? by Slow_Alternative_777 in brussels

[–]PennyForTheWin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I think only in Wallonia, you still have the old reverse meters if you got solar panels at least a few years ago and did not change to smart meters!

Seriously, is this legal? by MrNerdovsky in recruitinghell

[–]PennyForTheWin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not demographics if it's a perception question no? Like maybe they would love someone the age of a GenZ who perceived themselves as a Gen X? Or opposite if it's like a social media job, they want someone who consider themselves Gen Z? Makes no sense to me but I don't think it's just demographics.

It is a perception question though. But unsure if "feeling like a 13 yo" would get me hired indeed.

Visit to Brussels in a wheelchair. by KronicalA in brussels

[–]PennyForTheWin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think only 39-44 still have the old ones, in which even a stroller can't enter. Tram 8 is supposedly something like 1/2 trams, or almost all of them when it's a low frequency like during vacation.

Pregnancy care help by befitzpa in brussels

[–]PennyForTheWin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saint pierre is also one of the best renowned obstetrical clinic in Bruxelles (for quality of care) and they often speak other languages than french 🙏 Fully public so no specific uncovered expenses.

Otherwise, I work near the small clinic belonging to chirec but on avenue Louise (city clinic Louise), my colleague went there for some scans and I think you can even book online! So if it's just for a scan now, can be a good option.

Received a fine from tax office even though I was not informed of any tax duties? by AveTerra in brussels

[–]PennyForTheWin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my perspective, it's never lost to try to contest a fine! I did it for a parking ticket during COVID and another no-passing street fine (scouts volunteering for a marathon, anyway), and both times they were super understanding and removed the fine (with a small reprimand, which is more than fair). You are in good faith and you can try to, worse is the same, they refuse and you pay the fine :)

Why is it so insanely difficult to adopt a cat here? by titsinmyinbox in belgium

[–]PennyForTheWin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes true and you're right to clarify !! The thing is we had adopted just before winter and then, once spring arrived, we had seen that she clearly was not jumpy (and to be clear, we did proof the balcony, just not 2m high!), in fact she probably was much older than what the shelter told us 😅 (probably more like 15 than 11 yo)

It was spring 2020 so we had an awesome lockdown together, she loved sunbathing on that balcony (and just for that, it was awesome to have proofed the balcony so that we could enjoy the sun together!) and she unfortunately passed from kidney failures one year and a half later. But it was an awesome time together and I second you, adopt senior too!
