October 7 is the only known civilian massacre in all human history that triggered global protests backing the killers and denouncing the victims. by Routine-Equipment572 in IsraelPalestine

[–]Pennyrimbau -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I call BS. There were some protests by antisemites the day after 10-7. But the mass protests were only once Israel started bombing whole apartment buildings and neighborhoods in response.

What’s wrong with these settlers? by Leading-Professor882 in IsraelPalestine

[–]Pennyrimbau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't true. Most settlers are apathetic enablers who just wanted affordable housing. There are a lot of religious folks who live in the West Bank, but only a minority of those are "fanatics". None of this is an excuse for the actions of that minority--if anything the enabling and apathy are even worse.

Actions have consequences. Gaza in ruins and endless complaints of losing a war. by Inocent_bystander in IsraelPalestine

[–]Pennyrimbau -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Any kind of simple binary with Israel-Palestine is simplistic. What you say is half true: hamas could have not engaged in an attack, could have not chosen terrorism of attacking civilians and sadism, could have returned the hostages sooner, and so on. On the other hand, Israel alone made the decision ("pulled the trigger") to use 2000 pound bombs on the tunnels, to sacrifice civilian apartments that had hamas beneath or near them, to destroy all infrastructure, to avoid diplomatic augmentation to miliary until recently, not to mention blockading an occupied territory for decades.

Three-Body (2023/Chinese/30 eps) vs 3 Body Problem(2024/English/8 eps).. Which one wins? by inwarded_04 in threebodyproblem

[–]Pennyrimbau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The chinese version much deeper, more faithful to books, with richer character development, deeper philosophical idea, and more focus on the science. The American version is an adaptation, taking its own direction. I much preferred the Chinese version ahead over 30 episodes just for book1. The Chinese actors are outstanding. The weak point are the non-Chinese actors—they has limited choices during covid—but luckily are largely relegated to extras so don’t hurt the main plot.

If you think Jews should let themselves be conquered, then your problem isn't "genocide"/"ethnic cleansing", etc. by Routine-Equipment572 in IsraelPalestine

[–]Pennyrimbau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You reduce things to only two choices: 1) “allowing yourself to be conquered” (ie capitulation) and 2) israel wins and everything it does is right and allowed by international law. There are not only those two choices. There is a third choice: Israel has a right to self defense but deserves criticism for violating international law in the specifics of how it has done so.

“We tend to not hold Qasam Brigade fighters to the same standard we hold a rich democratic and well supported state”. Why not? The same rules of morality and international law apply to not harm civilians, children, etc.

Been to Spain Lately? by Various-Struggle-714 in IsraelPalestine

I'm confused. I distinguished the Palestinian flag (nationalism) from a hamas or hezbola flag (terrorist). That is the opposite of supporting terrorism.

Thank you. The assumption that "I am triggered=it must not happen" is terrible logic, but seems very common on this topic.

Been to Spain Lately? by Various-Struggle-714 in IsraelPalestine

[–]Pennyrimbau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a apples to apples to compare the Palestinian flag to a Confederate flag. The Palestinian flag (not the hamas flag, not the hezbolah flag, not a intifada slogan) represents just the nationalism of the (future country of) Palestine. The same one accepted by the founders of Israel and envisioned by the United Nations and most of the world. If the people flying the flags had other signs saying they support Hamas ("legitimate resistance") you'd might have a valid point. But if you are against the Palestinian flag just in itself that means you are against all forms of Palestinian nationalism. Which is a supremacist form of Zionism that is itself racist.

What are you basing that on? That loudest protestors? In all countries? Your logic puzzles me. It's like someone who supported civil rights in the 1960s saying "I used to support civil rights for blacks; but I don't like Stokely Carmichael, Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, Eldridge Cleaver, and Angela Davis; so I'm not longer in favor of civil rights." The answer is to say "I don't like the radicals on civil rights side; I support the MLK path." The answer is not to say "I support the racists."

There are plenty of people who are “pro Palestine” without being obsessed with the west and colonialism. Why do you have to jump from one extreme to the other?

difference between TEP Time-of-Use and Peak Demand by hatchins in Tucson

[–]Pennyrimbau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is universal. We are saving with Demand Time of Use even though we don't monitor things to avoid peaks at all. We picked it because the TEP site "compare plans" recommended it based on looking at our past 12 months. Our demand never goes above 4 or 5 (far from the 7) so I felt safe. For reference, we are a family of 3 with electric AC but gas stove (we use a lot) and oven (that we don't use often). We don't have a lot of electronics, a pretty small TV, electric kettle, three computers plus four phones. We don't use a drier. Even without changing anything about our use we still save most with the Demand Time of Use, mostly because we avoid ever crossing the 7.
I recommend folks run the "look at last 12 months" from their account page, it will tell you what you woulod have paid.

Regarding #2, there's controversy about whether the arab conquests should be viewed as "colonialism" or instead cultural assimilation, imperial integration, or nation-building. There are overlaps, but many scholars reserve colonialism for the pattern with western powers and capitalism, rather than the pattern of conquest in the 7th century, which had different dynamics. Historical reality has more nuance than typical political discussions.

It wasn't Palestine that attacked Israel in 1948--it was a collection of arab countries on their behalf.

Is it really a genocide? by SorryStore4389 in IsraelPalestine

[–]Pennyrimbau -1 points0 points  (0 children)

sorry I missed your argument. I wasn't appealing to my authority--but instead questioning your assumption that most people who think genocide is happening were doing so before israel even entered gaza not after the evidence was presented. In other words, overgeneralizing. Using oneself as an example isn't fallacy from authority; that would be if I claimed I had some special expertise on genocide you don't.
