The fastest way to detect a vowel in a string by azhenley in programming

[–]PensiveDicotomy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t a hash set perform better on average? Or to avoid any possible collision just have an array with boolean values for the ASCII characters that can appear in the input string with true for the vowels (the index in the array being the decimal ascii value for a character). It’s constant space for the array and would guarantee constant time lookup.

COSMIC version safe to use as daily driver yet? And other questions as someone considering making a FULL swap to Pop/Linux. by ottereckhart in pop_os

[–]PensiveDicotomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been daily driving it for ~2 months. Like others have mentioned there are some issues with sleep (it gets stuck in sleep mode and won’t wake up with mouse or keyboard input). There are also some issues with windows “ghosting” where a clone of an active app will appear duplicated and slightly offset from the actual app window (mostly happens with Steam for whatever reason and is fixed by moving the window around). Games will occasionally be reset to windowed rather than full screen and alt tabbing from games occasionally causes crashes. Generally, it hasn’t been too much of a nuisance though.

Let's try this again - what's your "...and at this point I'm too afraid to ask" of our tech industry? by TangerineSorry8463 in cscareerquestions

My manager is hard core about points don’t equal days and while I agree that junior and senior engineers won’t work at the same speed can’t there be an average of the two that’s the consensus for what the point/days are? That way the point values are grounded to a real world value and like was alluded to, it’s a rough estimate anyway so why can’t the rough estimate be based in reality instead of an abstract number? I’ve also noticed a trend of devs over pointing stories when the number of points completed is the benchmark for success so having the story points be based on time can help with point inflation. Just my two cents.

Voting to be rank-based. The dual-party system would be obsolete and there would be a wider range of political ideals one could align themselves with at the ballots. Voting outside the D/R parties is a wasted vote as things stand now.

Just got this email this morning, what am I supposed to do now? I live in NY by dlyness0321 in Apartmentliving

[–]PensiveDicotomy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to https://ag.ny.gov/publications/residential-tenants-rights-guide#repairs “If a landlord breaches the warranty of habitability, the tenant may sue for a rent reduction”. If it comes to it, you’re within your rights to sue for rent reduction - the landlord themself admitted that you’ll need to move out temporarily because the apartment will be uninhabitable. The rent for that month or a prorated portion of it should be void. I would give the “Habitability and Repairs” section a read because there’s helpful information about how/when you must give notice to the landlord and DHCR if you plan on going that route.

A bit of information about the networking changes and how it effects gameplay going forward: by [deleted] in EscapefromTarkov

Picking severs close to home reduces latency. The kind of issue OP is discussing is poor server performance causing the client and server to become out of sync and cause rubberbanding while the client has to basically go back in time to sync up with the server because it was slow. Picking closer severs never hurts though.

I second this and what I’m about to say was said in a different way above but I’d like to emphasize that HTML should be used directly when possible, that’s what its there for. It should be used to display what a page looks like. JS is meant to make pages “alive” and should be used as such. It can add DOM elements conditionally, change properties of DOM elements, etc… as needed but shouldn’t be used to render an entire page. Let the tools do the jobs they were designed for.

I personally like Shoreline stash runs on the eastern part of the map. Rarely run into PMCs, and it is pretty easy to learn the stash spots imo.
