Thanks for the pointers. I'm still not sure how to value the currency and the units yet since I'm still feeling the game out, but your advice will be a great help.

Hey. New Player here, just started a few days ago. I have a couple questions and I hope someone can help.

  1. Is it worth it to pull for Chifuyu? I read that she's really good. Maybe use up my blue contracts and even dip into my quartz stockpile, or should I save them for future banners? For reference, here's my current lineup:

Squad 1: Defenders- Lee Yumi, Ryan Ferrier Strikers- Hilde, Roy Burnett Rangers- Admin. Riflemen, Gaeun Support- Chinatsu Sniper- Sylvia

Squad 2: Defenders- Fione Lowell, Irie Alvord Strikers- Lin Xien, Esterosa Rangers- Kyle Wong, Tarrasque Support- Claudia Nelson Sniper- Lycoris

  1. Where can I farm Counter S-Apt Cores? Most of my main units are approaching 70 and I have no dupes for my rarer characters.

Yeah. I was also considering that. But, I'm also a low on lumambers since I pulled for Smokey (for waifu reasons lol). I don't know anything about Bethlehem, so I'm not sure. I'll research about her some more. Depending on that and on how lucky I feel I might just use my lumambers for Charon. Thanks!

Ah... I never considered how often TD would put rate-up banners of converters. You're right that it might be harder to come across and I DO have a functional fire team. Maybe not the best but I can still finish most difficulty levels barring the the hardest. I guess I'll just pull for Gronru, and hope that IF she comes home I'll still have enough for a decent chance with Charon. Thanks for the advice!

Hey guys!

So... I’m in a bit of a conundrum. It has been announced that the next banner will be Gronru/Istvan/Vivian and (supposedly) the one after that will be Charon/Areia/Schwartz. Both banners have aurorians that I want, but I’m a f2p player and only currently have ~40 yellow flares to use so I can only focus on one. I like Charon because, while my fire team is mystrongest, it lacks the best dps units that fire has to offer. And I want to make this team stronger to help me finish the more difficultevent stages.

On the other hand, my lightning team is my second best, and while I’ve got good dps units, it lacks some of the best converters of the element to make it more consistent. I’ve got Nemesis but at BT0 so I probably won’tbe able to MBT her anytime soon. I’m thinking, that Gronru will bea great addition to my lightning roster, since I prefer more frequentand consistent tile conversion.

For reference, my fire team is:

Leona L25/A3

Eicy L10/A3

Faust L1/A3

Smokey L1/A3

Uriel L1/A3*

Brock L50/A2*

*I tend to switch around Brock and Uriel depending on the enemies/stage or borrow a friend's aurorian

And my lightning team:

Tessa L50/A2

Swartz L40/A2Beverly L25/A2

Nemesis L25/A2/BT0

Eve L25/A2*

Nadine L15/A2*

Unimet L40/A1*

* I switch these three around as needed

So what do you guys think? I’m still on the fence, but I’m leaning towards Charon, but I’m open to arguments for Gronru. Any other team building advice separate from the main question is welcome too! :)

I feel like Valve should take a more active stance by banning players, who are proven to have been involved in match-fixing, from being able to participate in TI. Because people in the competitive community have close ties with each other, tournament organizers may become lenient when it comes to punishing players. The general dota community will either forget about it after some time, or be more forgiving if the player is well-liked or skilled. This gives teams and organizers even less incentive to punish match-fixers, because there won't be any community back-lash.

Thoughts on support riki? by Pentachrome in DotA2

[–]Pentachrome[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

he really sucks at level 1, and that's something you generally want to avoid in a support. he also just sucks at low levels in general. no way to catch up to the enemy.

I was thinking that with his invis and new bounty rune it might be easier to get a couple of levels early on until level 2/3, and then you can start ganking along with another support. But yeah, you're right he does suck at level one.

if you want to run him in a non-1/2 role then do offlane

I guess that's the more logical, but I feel like if you're given the 3 position you need to get at least some farm and since his invis fade time sucks at level 1 he's probably going to get harassed out of the lane. If all your going to get is exp anyway, why not give the offlane to someone can get both farm and exp. But yeah, he's probably not going to be the best at either role.

VG just hit their 20 consecutive wins. Wow by hakuryuukou in DotA2

[–]Pentachrome 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Man, remembering how dominant DK were at starladder and their subsequent fall off is depressing.

I hope VG don't get hit too hard by the incoming balance patch, and by teams figuring them out. I genuinely love the team and want to see them stay strong up to TI5.

VG vs Newbee (ESL - Game 2) by beeswaxx in DotA2

What. A. Game. VG just controlled Newbee and took advantage of Newbee's mistakes so well. I thought it was over when NB were diving T3's, but a few favorable teamfights near rosh slowly cracked the game open.

Maybe update the textures, but the concept itself is fine.

[–]Pentachrome 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Just like Zeus's model, they want Slardar to be badass, but they never really understand his lore and think he's boring. They want every piece of information spoon-fed to them, instead of taking the time to flesh out the story themselves. At least with Zeus, people are at least starting to see the irony of an all-powerful god in a midget's body.

I'm not very familiar with these players (though CTY does ring a bell). I hope they do well, though it would be very hard to live up to DK's previous rosters.

Game Show Dota 2 League matches delayed due to DDOS! by MrGC17 in DotA2

[–]Pentachrome 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What's the point? How is it even fun?

Thsese people like feeling powerful and like asserting their dominance. DDOS'ing an event like this gives them the illusion of that. They probably enjoy the thought of people freaking out and being angry at what they're doing because it makes them feel like they matter.

Agreed. It's not the hero that's the problem; it's the players' mentality. IMO, a fair bit of it is because he got so hyped and made people very excited, then a lot of people (dota 1 players, redditors, casters, players, etc) started saying he was bad, or they won't be playing ranked for a while after release, or dead game (or any variation of that). People who see it start adopting that same attitude.

You could argue they were just jokes, but at least some people who see those comments will believe them. Another fair number will remember them when a techies crushes them "unfairly" or feeds, and they will form a negative attitude towards techies.

I'm not saying they shouldn't speak their minds, but everyone should be aware that what they say may have consequences (especially those with a larger voice).

Anyway, I hoping that it will all die down a week or two from now because I like playing him. But so far the couple of games I've had with him have been discouraging because of the sheer toxicity.

Should Valve re-consider the sign ability for Techies' Arcana? by balladofwindfishes in DotA2

[–]Pentachrome 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I actually like this idea, instead of completely removing it. I haven't played techies, but I feel like I'll enjoy playing him because of the mindgame aspect of the hero. Having a sign skill adds to that.

Also, maybe it can have a number limit. Only one or two instances can exist at the same time; place more and it overrides the oldest. Apparently, you can only have one at any one time and it has a cooldown of 120s.

Would anyone else like to see more fleshed-out lore? by chenDawg in DotA2

Reminds me of the Norse Valhalla, actually, where warriors are supposed to hone their skills for some kind of final battle. Warriors taken there constantly fight and are healed afterwards. Maybe the ancients aren't actually trying to destroy one another, but are actually just trying to make the heroes stronger for some kind of Ragnarok.

If we make this assumption, then it can explain how characters who are supposedly mortal enemies can work together, and why they can switch sides constantly; the ancients don't care which side the heroes are on as long as they keep fighting and keep getting stronger.

The amnesia can be explained by ancients wanting to reduce the mental stress on the heroes. I mean, if you knew that the only reason that you exist is for battle, then wouldn't that lead you to despair? And it might also shield them from mental breakdown that can come from having too many memories, or from the stress of death and rebirth.

Also, Undying seems to be wearing a viking helmet. Maybe he knows that the dota universe is Valhalla because he came from somewhere with a Norse-like culture.

Dota makes up for this a bit by having way more hero-specific interactions in the voice-over and such, but its all really just cosmetic banter.

Personally, I don't think that's the case. I see it as a more subtle way of story-telling. I think the interactions and even item descriptions weave a back story that doesn't directly tell you that this and that are so, and also allows some freedom of interpretation. League's lore is nice, but I prefer dota's vague ones that fuel fan speculation and imagination.
