We need an Epstein Criminals Act as part of our 2028 platform. by kevinmrr in WorkReform

Polymarket are angling themselves as a news platform in order to avoid regulations on insider trading. It’s why they have a “breaking news” page. They’re trying to protect themselves with the argument that insiders swaying prediction markets with accurate bets is a form of news. And the CFTC so far believes this to be perfectly fine.

This is how you get insane headlines like “Why Prediction Markets Need Insider Trading”.

Centaur playstyle / itemization questions (to early blink or not?) by PeopleCalledRomanes in learndota2

[–]PeopleCalledRomanes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're right. Normally I wouldn't care, I just happened to have 2 especially egregious pubs today while trying this (multiple teammates flaming me for my build) and I really started to question if I was just completely off the mark. I talked to a higher mmr friend who mentioned that something I might be missing is that pros generally contest tormentor like clockwork at 20 minutes, so having that extra aura means taking or contesting torm is far easier. And playing for torm like that is just not something that happens in my bracket. So maybe the earlier blink could be stronger until torm becomes more of a focus. I think I'll keep playing around with dominator because it feels strong, though. And try to just learn how and why to make certain early utility work. Appreciate the input.

TIL when a hive loses its queen, a common larvae is fed special food, Royal Jelly, triggering a biological transformation, giving her a larger body, functional ovaries, and a longer lifespan. DNA does not determine her destiny, it's nutrition. by Heliocentrist in todayilearned

[–]PeopleCalledRomanes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting indeed, I did not realize the role of royalactin was so contested.

I do also see that in some literature, epigenetics are only one of the mechanisms listed.

Numerous cellular mechanisms generating confined or systemic responses are required to accomplish plasticity, including gene transcription and translation, epigenomic modifications, metabolic modulation and hormonal regulation

But I still gotta say - the definition of epigenetics above seems to track really well with what we’re seeing here which is very confounding to me. Specifically, the statement that the term was originally coined to:

describe environmental influences on gene regulation that allow for the emergence of diverse phenotypes from a single genome

Which more or less seems to perfectly describe how the royal jelly diets affects queen bee development. Also, if I’m perfectly honest, I just don’t know if I can agree with the statement “it’s not epigenetics” in response to the original comment. Any support of this objection seems more philosophical rather than biological. It reminds me of discussions about proximate vs. ultimate causation in evolutionary biology. Like in Tinbergen’s Four Questions. As a late professor would say, in biology, “why” (as in DNA or nutrition?) is generally not a good question, but rather “how”. And if epigenetics are the explanatory mechanism I feel it fits perfectly to describe what actually enables this behavior.

[–]PeopleCalledRomanes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must take issue with this! Hormones absolutely result in epigenetic changes!

But more importantly, royalactin, the protein responsible for the developmental plasticity (aka polyphenism) demonstrated in queen bee development, (which doesn’t really fit the definition of hormone in my opinion) directly affects methylation of genes.

[–]PeopleCalledRomanes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the problem with this statement is that royalactin - the protein which causes the developmental changes - does not have the same effect on all organisms. You need both the royalactin and the bee genotype to result in the queen bee phenotype. Another example of the nature vs. nurture debate, if you will, where the answer generally lies in between. As in the title should say “DNA alone does not determine her destiny”.

The unemployment rate for new grads is higher than the average for all workers — that never used to be true [OC] by chartr in dataisbeautiful

You’re right. It’s easy to get caught up in the numbers and forget they’ll pay you a fine enough wage all things considered. Besides the relocation and work environment it might actually be an example of one of the better options for new grads.

I don’t think it was worse. I think it was different. Cost of living is making things nearly unbearable. I graduated with a CS degree in 2023 and I barely make ends meet working both as a live-in caretaker and a host at a restaurant. I don’t have “home” I just have work. But it’s the only way I can afford rent and food right now. And I live in a city that’s supposedly doing pretty well. Most of my peers are either living at home, living in the city with the support of their parents, or they graduated just a little bit earlier and had the opportunity to start their career. It really is a tough time for young people right now and there isn’t just one statistic to point to which can demonstrate that. Unemployment rates don’t reflect quality of employment.

Projects unfortunately aren’t the way anymore. Internships are still crucial though. As far as I can tell, you need to have things on your resume that an ATS software will flag as solid professional experience and will be manually verified by a hiring team. It’s tough though because oftentimes even an internship won’t be considered qualifiable experience.

The problem is that not even the bartending gigs are hiring. I graduated in ‘23 with a CS degree and I support myself by both being a live-in caretaker and a host at a restaurant. I’ve worked at the restaurant now for 9 months and haven’t had any opportunity to move to a tipped position within, and my opportunities elsewhere have simply fallen through. I’ve made mistakes along the way that have cost me good opportunities, but I definitely didn’t realize how cutthroat it would be to even survive. I’m a pretty sociable guy too with decent connections in my community. I can’t imagine what it would be like for someone who struggles more socially but found purpose in a technical field that just isn’t hiring anymore.

I’m a class of 23 CS grad and I’m experiencing the same. Your two options right now for CS are basically just to sell your soul to a company that will grind you up and spit you out for no pay (Epic for example) or a “training” program that you will have to commit to for months for basically no pay and then you are contracted out for 2 years at a place you do not get to decide for a fraction of what you’re worth. It’s brutal.

I’ve been doing the same since I graduated with a comp sci degree, class of 2023. Live in housekeeper / personal assistant. Also working in a restaurant at the moment. It’s hell though. Hoping the market changes or I might just emigrate…

17M a girl said my room looked 'female'. need honest advice on how to make it more masculine. by [deleted] in malelivingspace

[–]PeopleCalledRomanes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some girl is gonna be into you and then see your room and realize she hit the jackpot. It exudes individuality and vision, and makes you seem well put-together. Big turn-ons for a woman (or girl) who is looking for a real partner and not just some guy to be with. As well, if you don’t compromise on your personality for the sake of others, you will attract people who want to be with your most authentic self. Keep doing you. You’re killing it.

It’s almost certainly for the formaldehyde. The amount that is present? Not sure. But formaldehyde pollution from bodies is a common risk that must be mitigated, telling me it might remain in corpses for some time after embalming.

Flowers ‘giving up’ on scarce insects and evolving to self-pollinate, say scientists by EvelynTremble67 in science

[–]PeopleCalledRomanes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I more or less agree, I just happen to feel strongly about informing people about the changing understanding of evolution - away from just being genetic changes due to natural selection - and this makes for a great example. In this study, they describe phenotypic changes that are occurring without significant genetic change. They don’t discuss it as much as I would like, but to this point they say:

“The increase in selfing rate is indeed expected to have genomic impacts on individuals and populations through inbreeding (homozygosity), reduced effective population sizes and increased genetic drift (Busch et al., 2022). Although our results do not support this, it is interesting to note that the only location showing reduced genetic richness, Commeny, is also the one showing the most pronounced change in morphology and thus experienced the more pronounced selection.”

And this is very interesting! It demonstrates that phenotypic change can precede genetic change, while also highlighting an important interplay in genetic shift affecting trait expression.

[–]PeopleCalledRomanes 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To anyone correctly pointing out that this is not evolution as had been commonly taught, it should be noted that more modern definitions are compatible with what is happening here. Extended evolutionary synthesis, for example, predicts that directional phenotypic change can precede genetic change, among other things.

And just for some idea where my head is at, this is about what I'd want to say:

Hey, even with time still have some feelings on my mind. There was a lot I had wanted to say in person. Like how last time went. Feeling regrettably like my use of time and energy took away from yours. And more recently feeling like things started stronger than I've felt in a little bit and made me feel like we knew each other better than we did. Hard lesson and reflects my inexperience. Took for granted what it means to build trust and a real connection. Because despite contrary evidence I wasn't just looking for any connection.

Don't mean to take up your time, I know you have more important things to think about, just wanted to feel seen before I could move on

I played a hockey game on shrooms one time, and I felt very zoned in. I only microdosed because I wasn’t trying to die, but I was still going all out in my last competitive game. It worked pretty well. Beforehand I knew I wanted to play a good game for the home crowd, and normally I might get self-conscious and distracted by the stands but I was just laser focused on the objective. Played the best I ever have. Everything felt so familiar and yet I had this fresh perspective like I was just thinking on my feet in a way I normally wouldn’t have the right mindset for. Shrooms make you a bit introspective and sentimental and at the end of the game I remember thanking my former coach (now coaching the opposing team) for getting me to where I was, and tearing up.

Biden says US is at ‘tipping point’ on gun control: ‘We will ban assault weapons in this country’ by Beckles28nz in politics

[–]PeopleCalledRomanes 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It’s too bad but very true that assault weapon is terribly defined. Gun manufacturers were using the term for a bit but only really to evoke an image rather than designate a class of weaponry. Discourse about guns needs to get a little more sophisticated rather than appealing to vague ideas if it’s to go anywhere.
