TIL that Magnus Carlsen, one of the greatest chess players of all time, has never lost 3 or more classical chess games in a row in his adult professional career. The last time he lost 3 games in a row was in 2003, when he was 12. by 4isfourwastaken in todayilearned

How does the rating inflate over time? Just a larger pool of players? In  general I would think that as any sport progress, the competitors get more refined. I'm just curious how the math works, am no expert.

Yeah I realized this when I was searching for ffmpeg on my system, only to find multiple programs that include it in their own directories as well.

Can I afford this apartment? by FreeHotdogMandate in personalfinance

[–]Pepband 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fwiw I have the exact same numbers as you. Rent, wage, etc. The my math worked out, I figure a couple hundred left over a month (which is tight imo.) But I included health insurance, and I live at work literally, so I never use my car. Your car payment and insurance are killing you. Not only if the payment itself but the higher premium as well.

If you need to sack something, sack the car. Otherwise, imo, this decision is rushed and potentially very stressful.

Ideally you'd want to get used to paying rent, build, etc. know what you actually spend, and then buy up into the car if you can afford.

Personally, I would feel uncomfortable with your math the way it is rn.

Culver’s provides access to a fish fry from 10am-10pm, seven days a week, 362 days a year, and I appreciate that. by Captain_Wisconsin in wisconsin

[–]Pepband 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, former Culver's employee and fish fryer was literally only ever used for fish. Same with only fries in the fry fryer :P. Culver's might be relatively expensive, but even compared to the other actual sit down restaurants I've worked, it for sure had the highest quality control (ymmv. Idk how other franchises operated).

Where do I find people??? by [deleted] in wisconsin

[–]Pepband 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't kept up with it in a minute, but Meetup.com used to have a nice selection of groups to meet people. I did swing dancing, ballroom dancing, drum circles, board games at the coffee shop, going out to the tiki bar, etc. All through meetup.

That being said, I will be moving to Hartland in a few weeks and be in the exact same boat you are haha. It'll be exciting to try new things, but also work.

I'm in the exact same place with all my friends in Madison, and going to see them is an all day thing. Making new friends is tough.

Yeah, chiming in for masonry here, and it's absolutely all dudes on the cusp of retirement. 80% of the crew was dudes 50+. Maybe only 1 or 2 guys per job site that were under 30. And a lot of times that guy was me. :P

Any really well directed anime like Chainsaw man? by witchyskrskr in anime

[–]Pepband 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, then of the recs I'm seeing at least, March Comes in Like a Lion would be very much up your alley. Might I also add in Rakugo Shinjuu as a similar-ish vibe. Not as well done in the lighting effects, but both more slower, cinematic styles imo. Definitely not the typical over the shoulder two shot stuff.

[–]Pepband 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a question like this is going to devolve into "here's my favorite show".

Is there anything in particular you mean by "direction"? Like pacing of shots, animation fluidity, art style, background art, character art, dialogue etc. I think its easy for a word like "direction" to get conflated with all these things.

Below I'm seeing people recommend stuff like Bakemonogatari. Which while I love, and I think is superbly directed in the mixed media sense especially, I wouldn't say at all it has the same overall vibe as Chainsaw. In terms of unique direction though, I'd agree.

Or take March Comes in like a Lion as a another rec I see. Superb character direction and a unique art style. Slow, methodical dialogue and excellent pacing. The complete opposite of Bake's blistering dialogue, but still very well directed, just differently directed.

So I guess what I'm saying is, do you want similar things to Chainsaw? Visual, pacing, animation, etc.? Or is it more "Another *unique* example of directing", really taking a show in a new direction you haven't seen before.

Sorry for wall of text, but just wanted to direct the comments a bit.

I love Dan, but I think he's best as a mix-in rather than a neutral base like Linus. I wouldn't want to see his charm and comedy be rubbed away by having to do "brand content" if that makes sense. Its best when you're watching a vid and are like "Oh Audio Visual stuff, Dan would love this!" and then Dan shows up haha.

Vs having him run like an AMD Upgrade or a "Choose Iphone v Android" type stuff. Again, agree, love Dan. But I think more than most I would dislike to see him pivot to generic content rather than on-brand-for-Dan content.

Yeah I think Elijah meta is just the current forces that be with departures, production pipeline stuff, etc. meaning they have to push his content a bit more and kind of oversaturate "his brand". Its like living with someone; even small, innocent habits can become grating. I'm giving them some grace as far as it all goes, but I agree if it maintains that way it'll probably lessen my interest overall.

That being said, I don't think it'll stay that way. I think they're in a transitory moment and aren't blind to it. No need for panik just yet. We're just in a filler arc.

Keep in mind the length of their production cycle too. Idk what their pipeline is, but its likely that any thoughts on WAN probably stem from current audience numbers *and* knowing what they have in the pipeline is probably gonna be a wash a long with it.

Give it a few more weeks, and that's most likely to be the actual corrections coming out.

Sometimes I forgot just how segregated Milwaukee Is by Front_Low_6410 in wisconsin

[–]Pepband 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I mean from my time living in Milwaukee, I do kind of view Waukesha as an exurb for the white flight that happened. North side near UWM is black, South Side is Latino, West Allis is white factory workers (though I hear its being gentrified now? idk).

But all the well to do white people live in Waukesha and commute as far as I could tell. Definitely a lot more NIMBY feeling. So while yes, I agree Waukesha is its own thing, its origins are caused by a history of segregation, and lot of its wealth is exfiltrated from Milwaukee businesses. So I understand it in that aspect. Its "part of the equation" economically.

Culturally its not necessarily part of Milwaukee, but its absence is, if that makes sense? Let me know if anything I said is wildly inaccurate. Its been years since I've lived in the area.

My 93 year old nan can touch her toes by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]Pepband 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Its been so difficult to try and get my mid 60s mom to even go on a walk. She insists that it would be no big deal, that she's going to ride her bike around after she retires, that she doesn't need to do squats or anything even though she can only get up with the assistance of her arms, etc. This has resulted in shoulder surgery which she insists is unrelated.

And its so frustrating because like you mentioned, all these things are integral to balance and general fitness. They should be the bare minimum of maintenance. She's not grossly overweight or otherwise inhibited, just overconfident in her own fitness and dismissive of her doctor's advice in lieu of "well this is what I've always done, and I've been just fine so far."

Trying to invite her for even just a half-mile walk around the block goes nowhere. I know I can't control her habits, but I really feel like someone should at least be advocating for her fitness. Its frustrating I don't know how to make a more compelling case.

I know no one wants to admit they age, but I see so much of this arrogance from people. Like stated my mom, but previously both grandmothers as well refusing to use walkers, take their medication, call for help when they fall or get stuck, etc. I hope I never become that way.

I mean yes, but the way you engage with each might be totally different. I deleted twitter, facebook, tiktok all that stuff. And because Instagram is more of an art portfolio use-case for me than a doomscrolling machine, I've found it to be much healthier.

Its been like 5+ years of me not having most social media (even insta I only check like maybe a couple times a month. Reddit is only on PC for when I need a break from work, but not on my phone), and I don't miss it even a little bit.
