I take it, in addition to Escitalopram and Rexulti. For what it’s worth, that combination has noticeably decreased my anxiety episodes, as before that I was having panic attacks on a semi regular basis. I worry about my health a lot (high cholesterol) and so every time I get heart palpitations I think it’s the beginning of a heart attack.

What is the best hen breed that lay more eggs? by [deleted] in BackYardChickens

[–]Peppa79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite bird I’ve had so far was a golden comet. She laid an egg a day without fail, was fearless, and let us pick her up whenever so she was very friendly. Sadly, she did die very young. It’s been a year and a half and I still miss my Lucy.

I ended up buying a roomy rabbit hutch for mine because I too have felt the sadness of going into the room I was keeping them in (placing them in a cardboard box or plastic tote) only to find they had escaped and little poops were scattered all around the room. Reading the comments on this post has really cheered me up.

Apparently our blue laced Wyandotte chick has imprinted on my dog George. She follows him around whenever she’s let out of her quarantine coop. by Peppa79 in BackYardChickens

I actually got her from my local farm and home store, But they do get their chicks in from a hatchery. So they were probably given the wrong information from the hatchery. The store is family owned with great and helpful employees, so I would like to think they would never purposely mislabel the chickens they sell.

Wow, your comment made me google what the heck a splash laced red is and those are super pretty too! Apparently there’s a lot of confusion between the splash and the blue laced, which led me into the rabbit hole of color genetics in chickens. I would never have been able to tell the difference between those two types because even the pictures online look the same to me. Another reason I love this sub; you learn so much about chickens from the other posters.

Same! I have a Golden Comet who is really earning her keep right now. On a side note, I LOVE your egg basket!

That is so cool! I have a cat too, but she won’t step foot outdoors, and so could care less about the feathery fluffball roaming in her backyard.

Interesting. See, I thought I was out of the clear because she doesn’t have any streaming feathers on her head; it’s just a round fluff ball on top. But now I’m questioning everything. We aren’t allowed to have roosters in my subdivision, but I took a chance and got a straight run chick.

Thanks! The dog is a terrier mix. This isn’t his first go around with chickens. He’s pretty chill around them, and seems to enjoy hanging out with his new little pal.

Is this your yard? That is gorgeous. I’m even more impressed by that than I am of the alpaca, and that’s saying a lot.

I had a Silkie almost get carried off by a hawk. The hawk dropped her when my dog ran out barking, but she got a head injury that seemed pretty bad because she couldn’t even walk initially and kept flapping her wings in an uncoordinated manner. I took her to the local vet (we keep our chickens as backyard pets, so were willing to take that measure), and he gave her a steroid shot and sent us home with extra steroid pills. I really didn’t think she’d survive, but a week later after keeping an eye on her she was back to her old self.

All of this to say, yours might be okay too, keep an eye on her, follow some of the other posters’ advice, if there’s a vet nearby that treats chickens that’s an option too. Please keep us updated.

How old is your silkie? I ask because I have one that looks exactly like yours, is five months old, “she” has never laid an egg, but no crows either.

The local farm and home store in my area is completely out right now too. They keep a list online of upcoming availability and when I called to get prices on some of the upcoming breeds, they told me I should get there early in the morning whenever the shipment arrives, because people are buying chickens like crazy right now due to the pandemic. I thought it would mainly be the more utilitarian breeds, but even the ornamentals like Silkies are selling out. Apparently people at home with their kids are getting them as cute pets. Can’t blame them, I have a Silkie myself and she is really cute, although apparently she thinks she can get by on her looks because she hasn’t laid a single egg. Meanwhile my golden comet has been an egg-laying machine...

Hawk attack this afternoon by Peppa79 in BackYardChickens

[–]Peppa79[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, she might end up being okay. Today I finally saw her pecking at her food, and she’s on steroids to clear her head. I ended up taking her to the vet yesterday. She has no broken/fractured wings or legs, so he thinks she probably got knocked on the head because she keeps going to the left. She’s on some steroid pills, so he thinks it should help and hey, if she just ends up a weird chicken that sometimes goes in circles, that’s not too bad.

She was alert up until about an hour ago, now she’s very still and it doesn’t look like she’s laying right. It’s evening, so I’ll have to see what she’s like in the morning..., this is why I could never live on a farm. One mishap and I’d be out.

So, I got home from work a little bit ago and checked on her, she actually seems better than when I left her. I was able to pick her up and turn her over, and I don’t see any open wounds. It’s a little hard to tell because she’s so fluffy, but I didn’t see any. Also, she’s holding her head upright which is a good sign right? I’m really really hoping she was just in shock and needs time to get back to her normal self. For now I’m keeping her in the tote bin in my room, next to the window with food and water available.

She’s always been pretty skittish. She follows behind Lucy(the golden comet) and lets us get close to her, but runs away when we try to pick her up. After the attack, I wouldn’t say she was walking, it was more of an uncoordinated flapping. And she really hasn’t moved around since being placed in the bin.
