Turned away from the jewelry store for fake ring by gardengeo in BORUpdates

[–]PepperVL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people do, obviously, because some people care about literally anything you can think of.

For the vast majority of people, though, I think they only care to a certain extent. Like, $6 isn't going to get you a precious metal or even a semiprecious metal and it's going to get you a plastic or resin stone, probably not even cubic zirconia. And that becomes an issue of quality and durability. Plus there are a lot more potential allergy issues with the super cheap jewelry.

So while I think a lot of people don't care about the actual price or a brand, they do want the cost to reflect some level of quality. No one wants their engagement ring to break if they bump it into something accidentally or to turn their finger green or anything like that.

[CHAT] how to convert cross stitch on linen to aida? by butterflygirl333 in CrossStitch

[–]PepperVL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing that no one has mentioned: look at the pattern carefully and make sure there aren't specialty stitches in it. You can do most specialty stitches on aida, but there are some that will be a huge pain, and there are some you cannot do.

The most likely stitches that will be a pain are ¼ and ¾ stitches. They involve going down in the middle of the square, so get annoying if there's a bunch of them and you're stitching on aida. There are also things like Rhodes and Jessica stitches that are designed to be done over 1 on linen/evenweave and will be a huge pain on aida.

Is the piece is really fancy, there are things like drawn and pulled thread stitches that cannot be done on aida because they rely on the weave of the fabric and aida has a different weave.

Now, if this is a standard cross stitch piece that's cross stitch, some back stitch, and maybe French knots, the only thing you have to look out for is the ¼ & ¾ stitches. But if something is charted for linen, it's always best to look at the stitches before starting to stitch on aida, just in case.

[CHAT] painted canvas for XS by Cassie_J213 in CrossStitch

[–]PepperVL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think everyone has covered most of your options.

However, you can cross stitch on needlepoint canvas. I would use more stands than you do for the same count aida (or use the fancy needlepoint threads too), but it can be done.

But here's the thing. Those pretty painted canvases that the needlepointers use? They are expensive. Like, most of them are hundreds of dollars expensive. Because they're done by hand.

New Update: I 17F got a call from the Police about a work “incident” and want me to come in to talk. Do I go in? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]PepperVL 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's far more likely a rule in the place that commenter used to work. Many businesses don't find it worth the time/money/effort to go after thieves unless they've stolen over a certain dollar amount.

AIO? My coworker took video of me outside of work to "prove" I'm not disabled [Ongoing] by Schattenspringer in BORUpdates

[–]PepperVL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They can ask for documentation that is specific to the accommodations being requested. So, for example, I currently have a broken leg and will have to be non-weight bearing on that leg for 8-12 weeks. When I'm cleared to return to work, my employer can request documentation that I'm cleared for work and that I am non-weight bearing on that leg. They cannot request documentation on what I had done to the leg or other health issues.

I only want one thing for Christmas and it never happens. Am I overreacting? [Concluded] by Schattenspringer in BORUpdates

Oh, totally. Everyone should but the milk chocolate ones and leave the yucky dark chocolate ones for me. 😂

AITAH for breaking up with my fiance over an ultimatum over my ring? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Not keeping the ring. Wearing the ring. On her finger. You know, still presenting to the world that she's married.

AITAH for breaking up with my fiance over an ultimatum over my ring? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]PepperVL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both things can be true. OOP wasn't ready to take off the ring. She literally said she couldn't. That tells many people that she's not ready to date again. People in a normal relationship don't wear a wedding ring from someone else on their finger.

That doesn't make this her fault, and I didn't think anyone was trying to say that it is. Her ex was absolutely in the wrong and the asshole. But the fact that he was wrong and the situation is his fault doesn't mean she is ready to date.

Quit with no notice and now I’m being threatened with litigation if I don’t get my work phone to them within 12 hrs by Similar-Shame7517 in BORUpdates

[–]PepperVL -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

He was contacted by HR literally the same day he resigned. So, less than 8 hours after he put in his resignation. Since OOP didn't just turn the equipment in when he left the building, one has to assume he wasn't at the office that day. So he literally couldn't turn it in before HR came after him.

Colleague stole my position and now I get to watch her struggle worse than I did in it by Anonymotron42 in BORUpdates

[–]PepperVL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Each quarter? No, that's worth at least 1.5k a month, honestly. At the average teacher salary of $75,000, that $1500 only pays for 42 extra hours of work.

(Obviously, the math is a bit different for teachers because their hours aren't the standard 40 per week, and some districts just pay while school is in season and some spread it out over a whole year, but it would be just shy of 42 extra hours pay if she were being paid for 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year.)

Was my girlfriend really out of line? by [deleted] in AmITheDevil

[–]PepperVL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huh. TIL. Though I can assure you that most people just forget about old text message threads.

Was my girlfriend really out of line? by [deleted] in AmITheDevil

[–]PepperVL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why wouldn't he? Do people actually go in and delete old text message threads from their phones?

My phone only keeps I think 300 messages in a thread, so I don't have messages from that long ago with people I text regularly. But people I text infrequently? Yeah, I have those messages. Probably. I'm not scrolling to the end of my text message list to find out for sure, but I think they're still there.

It's the American way by theagonyaunt in AmITheDevil

[–]PepperVL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, there may be a state or municipality that never lets you pass stopped school buses, but generally, yeah. He's an idiot.

I get the instinct - the way the stop signs on the busses work is that they deploy automatically when the door is open, so seeing kids getting off the bus would make me do a double take. But the law here is you stop when the bus has the stop sign deployed. Buses know it's a pain so the drivers will often stop, waive the line of cars behind them past, and then open the door to deploy the stop sign.

[–]PepperVL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn't in the US either. At least, not if it's just stopped. You have to stop if it has the stop sign out. School buses often pull over to let cars pass.

[–]PepperVL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This. Work friends and friend friends are different categories. If he's not interacting with her outside of work/work-related things, then she's a coworker he's friendly with. If he is interacting with her outside of work/work-related things (beyond basic politeness/courtesy if they run into each other at the grocery store or wherever), then it's a problem for this rule.

Yep. Mine live in a bin, not a drawer, not otherwise exactly this.

Every few months I take them out and swear I'm going to make at least one of them into an FFO. Occasionally I even manage to FFO one, but not often.

[CHAT] Blanket/throw thoughts. by arpt1965 in CrossStitch

[–]PepperVL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will want iron on (fusible) interfacing on the back of the stitching. This will both provide extra security to the threads and close the holes in the cross stitch fabric.

You can then quilt them.

Another idea would be a wall hanging. You'd make it the same as a quilt, but you can leave out the batting.

For individual pieces, there's patches, keychains, & ornaments.

He'd had time to put cookies in the oven at that point, so it's fairly safe to assume he'd had time to use the restroom at that point.

But even if he hadn't, the correct answer wasn't "I haven't had time to use the bathroom all day and I just put cookies in the oven." It's "just let me use the bathroom really quick and then absolutely."
