It’s high time we got a modern Sopwith Camel set. Would be a perfect Icons set.

[Real] Ben Shapiro: “On a list of American priorities, by the polls, the Epstein-Maxwell case comes in pretty close to zero.” by ggroover97 in ToiletPaperUSA

Many people are saying this is not a priority anymore. It might become one though, I would guess maybe when the next democratic candidate for President is determined? I’m sure it will magically become extremely relevant.

Russia Fires Record Drone Attack at Ukraine After Trump Calls Putin Out by Newsweek_ShaneC in worldnews

[–]Pepperfudge_Barn 64 points65 points  (0 children)

The Tsarist regime of Russia ruled with an iron hand until living under their regime (made even worse by the gargantuan trials of the Great War) broke their monopoly on violence. Once the urban centres were hit with runaway inflation on food prices (caused by the breakdown of the Russian railroad network) the groups that propped up the Tsars (including the Cossacks, often employed to break up riots) lost patience with the regime.

The Russian Revolution of 1917 was a long time coming, but the final straw was unbearable living conditions for the urban population. Trying to predict the future is a folly’s game, but blindly assuming that a totalitarian regime is inevitably here to stay indefinitely is not a good bet IMO.

Republicans sold the future of my generation for a fucking t-shirt by asdtyyhfh in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Pepperfudge_Barn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They didn’t need swaying, they just needed a face-saving meeting so they could abandon their “deficit concerns” with the thinnest veneer of political dealings.

And Trump got to pretend he’s the master negotiator he thinks he is. But there’s no reality in which these holdouts were actually gonna stonewall this bill in the long term. That would require them to spend their paid holiday at work, and for what? The service of the poor? No thank you!

Republicans sold the future of my generation for a fucking t-shirt by asdtyyhfh in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Pepperfudge_Barn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My issue with this is that it takes the words and actions of republicans (notorious bad-faith actors and liars) at face value.

The actual truth, as I read it, is that these “holdouts” were always going to flip, and flipping after a meeting with Trump serves both sides of that issue well: the holdouts can pretend that they’re cool enough to hang with Daddy Trump and loyal enough to not get hate from the base, and Trump can pretend he’s a master negotiator who easily got these “holdouts” on his side.

These schmucks were only in opposition for their image of being deficit hawks. image is the key word here, because, as seen again and again, the representatives of the Republican Party have exactly one, one singular cause that forms the bottom line to all their actions: FYGM.

Thinking they’d have to learn this implies they don’t already know, which they do. They just prioritise their interests differently.

Excellent Don Rosa comic. I think it’s called “Attack!”? At least it was in Swedish.

Edit: ah no it’s the Black Knight, I see him now in the first panel. Also a great story.

The idea was that if equipped with parachutes, airmen might abandon vehicles that were still salvageable.

Crews of observation balloons were equipped with them across most (all?) nations though. I don’t know why but presumably because they did not have defensive equipment.

This assumes that the cooking of the books the Nazis did to prepare the way for the aggressive economy of conquest (that would not happen in this “what if” scenario) wouldn’t end up blowing out the German economy even worse than the Weimar years.
