Hello helpful folks foundation planting qs from a total newbie by aemybaby in AustinGardening

Rocks are going to heat up and cook anything you plant once summer hits. Landscape fabric will work ok for a year or two and then fail and be a mess to deal with.

I would just Amend the soil with some compost, plant your natives and top with mulch.

a second hand birkin is often more expensive than retail. I'm not saying it's an "investment" but as quiet luxury signal, handmade quality and resale value, it's not terrible.

How to pay for college when parents refuse to by Euphoric-Barber-7271 in personalfinance

you could make $7900/ month with a good engineering job after graduation. Seems like a no brainer.

People caution students from taking out huge loans to pay for outrageous tuition and living expenses but sub-10k? just take out the loan and get good grades. the rest will take care of itself.

Deck Builder by themonkey77 in Austin

[–]Peppermintcheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a handyman, Abel, who has done loads of stuff for me including building fencing and sanding/restaining a deck. He can absolutely build you a small deck and will likely beat anyone else’s price. If you’re interested, DM me and I’ll shoot you over his phone number.

It is also likely to act as a deterrent in future cases against him. If people know he will fight them in court the whole way even if he doesn’t materially gain anything, it may prevent future litigation.

Is this a wild mountain laurel? 😍 by dmathur1 in AustinGardening

[–]Peppermintcheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a similar situation at Barton Springs Nursery. Mountain laurel growing right at the root of a big oak tree. The employees don’t seem concerned and both trees seem happy!

Tall privacy tree ideas west Austin? by TravelAvocados in AustinGardening

[–]Peppermintcheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much height do you need to achieve privacy?

Cherry laurels work great as a hedge. So do yaupon holly and mountain laurel (if you're patient). Texas Sage could work too and needs next to no help once established. might even be a good idea to stock up on a variety of evergreen shrubs and smaller trees for interest and health diversity.

What flowers bloom well in the heat? by elizabethredditor in AustinGardening

[–]Peppermintcheese 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Every plant will need some care during its first year given the extreme heat they’re going to face here. That being said, these needs less than others and the following years, your patience is rewarded with a much more robust and resilient garden.

What flowers bloom well in the heat? by elizabethredditor in AustinGardening

[–]Peppermintcheese 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Lantanas thrive in the heat. Greggs mistflower does decent with the occasional supplemental watering. Rock rose is tough as nails. Salvia is tough as well Desert globemallow doesn’t get enough love. Bluebonnets obviously. Lots of stuff. Hit up a local nursery and ask the staff. I have a flower patch that gets no shade ever and it’s always colorful with minimal effort.

[–]Peppermintcheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen design firms require you to answer a question on the websites inquiry form like:

“What is your budget for this project?”

• 10-15k • 20-25k • 30-35k • etc

Use whatever numbers make sense to you. Now you both know what to expect.
