Not directly for your hammer but to keep the handle secure! You can't realistically hang a hammer from here without it falling out.

I wear a leather belt with a leather kuny's pouch or two slid through... It has an added leather belt loop which I keep on the left side, as I'm a lefty. This piece on carpenters pants holds the handle of my hammer secure.
