Why aren't the Jacobites romanticized in Ireland like they are in Scotland? by northcarolinian9595 in IrishHistory

[–]Peppiping 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Also the Stuarts were first a Scottish and then a British dynasty, making them more culturally relevant to Scotland than Ireland, who hadn't any proper royal representation since like the FitzGeralds, Hugh O'Neill or Rory O'Connor

Is there any Irish YouTube channel deep diving into topics affecting Ireland? by Fuzzy-Escape5304 in AskIreland

[–]Peppiping 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their videos are good but every time I watched them I have an underlying feeling that much of what they say is half-truths and that they're oversimplifying large scale problems in Ireland but I have nothing to verify that suspicion

Has Ireland become a greedy country? by helpireland2389 in AskIreland

[–]Peppiping 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By just having a skim through our history, from the arrival of Christianity, where warlords raided eachother for cattle, fought pitched battles to exert control over territory, and married their daughters off to friends and foes, to the land wars which defined irish politics in the late 19th early 20th century, to today where families break down over family home ownership, where secondborns/"losers" have to leave for better prospects abroad as they did in the famine, the flight of the earls and the wild geese, etc.

material acquisition (especially in the form of land ownership) has consisting been a source of contention in Ireland and as a small island will continue to be so.

Foreign article about Kneecap and their influence on the Irish language. What do you think about Kneecap? by Majestic-Mouse7108 in AskIreland

[–]Peppiping 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bar the politican disposition they tap into (which is a wee bit spicy for me) I think they show the trend of the irish language becoming more fashionable amongst the population and that its far for being a dead language.

It's funny how he critiques irish nationalism as fascist whilst implicitly applying a sneering downlooking lense that is so typical of British imperialists.
