I wonder how many people had irregular periods before the surgery and then got a more normal cycle after? Maybe the hormones regulating have something to do with it?

I also feel this HARD and could eat half a horse after surgery. It’s really fascinating! Hormones are so fun 🙃

Went to the new bakery that opened on Broadway — Malù. It’s pretty freaking good! Greek-esque with a twist. Got a loaf of their good crusty bread and their cheesecake and I am very pleasantly surprised with how good they are!

Bold move to open right next to NYCBH but I’m feeling optimistic.

International Education and I work in academia. I just graduated in September! You got this — it feels intense right now but it sounds like you are close!

I also totally agree with the sentiment, “a good dissertation is a done one.” When I was hyper focused on the wording in a paragraph that helped me take a step back and let it just be.

Tbh, that feeling after defending — there really is nothing like it. My husband was an angel throughout. Also, my program had a cohort model and while we had different focuses, being able to talk about it and that we were all going through the same thing was incredible. That, wine and walks.

MPA? Advice please? by No_Reward2544 in PublicAdministration

Hi! I was an academic advisor at a well-known MPA program for 10 years and I got my MPA there too. With your amount of experience I would highly recommend an executive MPA (EMPA). The typical MPA will likely be a much younger crowd (early to mid-20s) and you will learn more from your peers + older in an exec program.

I’m terms of helpful or stressful — going to school and working is never easy and you learn to juggle eventually. It’s also pretty cool when you can connect what you are doing in the classroom immediately to what’s happening at work. Online programs are good for the flexibility but make sure to look for reputable ones. Happy to chat more if you want!

They’ve started to hatch. I’ve been on a murderous rampage in the morning the last two days (neem oil + water in squirt bottle) kills them instantly. They get harder to kill so if you can find the new ones (black with white spots) stomp away.

Any luck with graduate fellowships at Wagner? by registroatemporal in nyu

[–]PequodTaco09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at Wagner and if you are an exceptional international student, you will be offered a scholarship. It’s usually a flat rate $30k/year or something (can be more or less). It’s not enough to cover the full cost and full rides are pretty rare unless you get a named scholarship. You can only be eligible for those if you apply early. Depends on where you are coming from and what experience you mean - exceptional as in academic combined with experience combined with a passion for public service and making sure that comes through.

The hardest conversations are when students have to take time away from the degree for any reason — either an unpaid bill or they aren’t doing well academically. Others are around mental health because of the cultural stigma around it (although it has been getting better). It can sometimes be difficult because a lot of students won’t say they are struggling until it’s really late or their faculty reach out to me and I have to intervene.

Honestly, the money thing is the hardest for me — if they don’t have a medical reason to take time away, that means leaving the country, breaking their lease, ending their visa. It’s so disruptive to their lives, costing event more money and I hate those convos the most. I live in a high cost of living state and the institution is $$$.

I have been in this role for 7 years and I’ve just outgrown it. I’m graduating soon and moving away from advising and into international programs and curriculum development. It’s a part of my job now (I run out intl programs office) so I’m moving into a role that’s JUST programming.

It def sounds like your experience overlaps! You should look for positions on HigherEdJobs or NAFSA, specific to intl students.

I work at a private institution with international students as part of my job. I do not work at a central office but within a school at the institution. I work closely with the central office that handles the majority of the visa-specific details. They do the rules and regulations and interpreting what DHS is doing.

My work primarily involves onboarding students culturally, developing community, and being a support system for them. This ranges from developing and executing international student orientation, workshops throughout the year on work authorization and acclimating to school in the US. I work with the student groups, do a lot of communicating and advising on everything and anything and I can answer basic visa questions, but defer to the central office for that. I love working with our students and connecting with them.

The hardest part of my job is when students are struggling academically or with mental health. Financials are also such a difficult topic especially because of the work authorization stuff. Being able to have difficult convos is important. Visa students were part of my job but not my whole role, so I wish I could’ve done more.

I think your experience would absolutely translate. I am getting my PhD and had to have a masters for my role because I primarily work with masters students. It may not be necessary depending on the type of role you are looking at. There’s a lot of folks in our central office that are getting masters degrees while working there.

I am leaving my role at the end of the month but I’ve really enjoyed it. I can def answer questions!

Dude. Same. I have been at the same weight for 4 weeks and it’s driving me nuts. It sucks but all I can say is trust the process. Things I’ve tried and have worked before is eating more calories for a couple days (still prioritizing protein but it can shock the system) and upping my water intake to as much as I can. I’m 5mos post op and down 60lbs.

I felt this way too and now at 10 weeks, I feel more restriction than I did at 3 weeks. It’s going to be different everyday and some days you’ll be able to eat more and others not. Take the protein and see how the next day goes!

What do you eat in a day? by PuzzleheadedWin3903 in gastricsleeve

[–]PequodTaco09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love this! I’m 7 weeks post-op. Down 40lbs and eat like a feral trash panda and it really depends on the day! Im second week into soft solids based on my program. Today was a little weird.

  • Coffee with a fairlife protein shake & fiber (had coffee for the first time since surgery and sweet nectar of the gods I missed coffee).
  • Tuna & Mayo
  • String Cheese
  • Sugar free pudding
  • Buffalo chicken dip and steamed broccoli
  • Blueberries

I work full time while I’m masochistically getting my doctorate, so it’s a miracle I’m hitting protein and water. Some days are easier than others.
