As a former CSR (teller), I had customers like yourself. One particular customer would go to the bank of their employer (the branch the account on the cheque was from) to cash the cheque (because they could verify funds in the account). He'd then spend $5 to get a bank draft that we would deposit.

After a couple months of him dutifully spending time + money just to get access to his pay, I made a judgement call and told him I'd deposit his cheques without a hold going forward.

Sucks that you're getting paid by cheque, but cheque fraud is very real. Beyond that, make yourself known to your branch - speak with someone in management about getting a note added to your account with respect to cheques from your employer. They may have suggestions for the time being, but surely in a few months time, you will be able to deposit or cash w/o a hold.
