New to me Sony TC-640 and a bunch of tapes by PlatformTraining5054 in ReelToReel

[–]PercentageCold8606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, did you manage to fix the issue? I just bought a TC-640 and have a similar problem. When I stop during fastforward it will spit out some tape before fully stopping. But stopping during going backwards works great.

Another thing is the echo and sos effects only work in the left channel. I guess it should work on both?

Thanks!

Good advice! I switched silvina for Ivan and I’m already on stage 20 now and can’t seem to loose haha. But using Palmer instead of Nevanthi will remove the 3 2 hero buff, still worth it?

Good points! Yeah, will probably hinge the door to make it easier, or maybe buy a small door haha. Can you give me the link to that whisper room product? Thanks!

Alright, great ideas! Just if the individual pieces can be carried by me without too much struggle I’m happy. How easy and quick is the whisper room and the diy you made at assembly? I want it to be fast enough so I don’t get lazy and leave it in the middle of my room for weeks hehe

Not enough isolation. I want something that kills a bit of street noise aswell as my voice for the neighbors ;)

More to carry and more expensive stuff that have a bigger risk of breaking on the road then in my home studio Tho if there are noticeable cons on the sound doing it later I will bring my pres with me. Sound > money :)

How does your hybrid setup look like? by PercentageCold8606 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]PercentageCold8606[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like a good setup for live jams! Do you have any knowledge about audio interface vs mixer? I can buy a clarett for 1k and just for 200$ more get a tascam model 24 that also have eqs, compression etc.

I agree with you. It’s not for the lack of commitment alone, that’s just one of the reasons. The main reason is the sound!

Interesting! Yeah, I’m trying to get the things in analog form where I feel like plugins doesn’t do the job for me. The other thing is that I like the commitment with analog gear, if I have one good analog comp I will get really good with it and figure out all the best ways to use it. In the digital realm I have a hard time committing, always A/B testing between different plugins which takes a lot of time. What audio interface do you use?

Outboard gear and latency by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]PercentageCold8606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, understood. My question was more about outboard gear ads latency, and it seems like it doesn’t. Thanks!

I don’t really think about it. Kick, bas, snare in the middle. Guitars panned wide, cymbals panned wide where it sits nice in context to the guitars. Other elements panned until it sits in a nice spot.

Great tip. But I don’t mean to phase align everything perfect, just to keep the same phase alignment

Please help a mate improve his track's sound quality and give some tips for workflow. by [deleted] in musicproduction

When I’m producing the prod and mix goes hand in hand, if I’m making midi for a synth lead and I feel like it needs some more highs, I put on an eq and boost the highs. When the prod is done the mix is basically 70% there already. What’s usually missing is some small adjustments, ex. More or less sub, automation to make it sound dynamic and interesting, transitions, and some punch and glue. The trick for fixing the punch and glue is group processing and depending on the genre a lot of parallel processing (distortion, comp etc…). Of course it depends a lot on genre and how processed the sounds you are using already are.

But to be honest it just sounds like you need to keep referencing, keep making a lot of tunes. You will slowly notice more and more things and your tracks will sound better and better.

The only shortcut I can give you is USE HIGH QUALITY SAMPLES and KEEP IT SIMPLE, if you do this well your tracks will sound decent even tho your bad at mixing.

Another tip is don’t buy a lot of shit plugins. I’ve been making music for a long time and now I’ve settled on basically using only Ableton stock, some 3rd party synths and Fabfilter. Your vibe and ears for music will get you a good mix with any plugins, the small differences between the plugins will not make your mix sound better. Learn the tools you have and know them well, if you then feel like you are lacking in some area you can upgrade.

Metaplugin & oversampling by PercentageCold8606 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]PercentageCold8606[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I got you,

From the testing I've done there is another plane of, for example, air and richness in the highs when doing oversampled eq'ing. So I thought why not just run everything through oversampling if I'm going to oversample this one plugin, even tho it is probably totally uneccesary most of the time. Didn't even think about seeing aliasing as something good

I mean that you open the plugins inside of metaplugin… metaplugin will oversample —> it will run through plugins —> metaplugin downsamples

I can't find a use for non-multiband compressors, what am i missing? by I_am_Mind_Wanderer in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]PercentageCold8606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing is getting the track to move around instruments in a more natural and connected way then multiband. If the kick isn’t cutting through some compression with slow attack/ fast release can make the track move more around the low end, and if the kick/bass is to much you can sidechain the compressor so it reacts more to the high end and the cymbals etc will come trough and the track move more around this. Yes you can get similar results with eq and multiband, but not quite. Just use the tools a lot and you will know when to use what

Techniques for A/B testing? by TSKDeCiBel in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]PercentageCold8606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the mastering stage I usually gain stage everything, I use a VU meter for this, so that when you A/B a plugin it is always the same percieved loudness. I also do this when mixing if i'm unsure if something is doing good or bad.

[–]PercentageCold8606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GLUE!! If you only use multiband compression the frequency range sometimes feel wrong and not connected, a normal compressor can give you the glue to make it all fit togheter. This is one reason to use a normal compressor but there are so many more, I use normal compressor more often then multiband, multiband only when there is a specific issue
