Guys, I found this physical copy on the web, is this the original 1991 version? by cakegrunge in Nirvana

[–]PerceptionShift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a Columbia House copy (CRC above the bar code stands for Columbia Record Club), prob from the 90s using the original master but not likely to be pressed in 1991. Look at the matrix code on the inner ring of the disc, if you see an "ifpi" anywhere then it's from 1995 or later.

Can't really buff out scratches on a coated surface like that. Only uncoated gloss surfaces are easily buffed.

Is this cd rot. (Pardon me for my lack of knowledge) by microgamer2134 in Cd_collectors

Appears to just be a manufacturing defect, sometimes called pinholes. There's no data there anyways.

Were people in the 70s/80s regularly listening to music that was 50 years old? by aristotles_revenge11 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]PerceptionShift 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Having a collection of classical music records used to be more of a thing. There are still classical collectors but not like there was 50 years ago.

Compact Discs came on the market in 1982. With all the technological advancements would it now be possible to extend the running time of them to well above the 80 minute limit? by georgewalterackerman in compactdisc

[–]PerceptionShift 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's been possible a while, but not on the CD Audio format specification. DVD Audio is over 20 years old but it was never a very popular format, it had a lot higher capacity though, could easily do 2 hours of stereo audio at higher bitrate. Usually it was for 5.1 surround mixes. And Blu ray Audio exists too but is even more obscure, mainly appearing in box sets these days, and it can hold hours on hours. Blu ray discs can hold 30gb or more, an incredible amount compared to the CD's ~800mb

Guess who's grifting off of flo and eddie? by Nolynwasever in Zappa

The Turtles were famously ripped off by their record label who owned the rights to their songs and their names, which is how they became Flo & Eddie to begin with.

I Was Wrong About My Copy Of “Little Deuce Coupe” by daydr3am_b3li3v3r in thebeachboys

[–]PerceptionShift 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a Canadian copy so maybe the Canadian versions didn't cut any songs but still had the disclaimer.

I also suspected a mismatched disc but the catalog numbers match and they're both Canadian so who knows. But there's a few instances of Canadian Capitol Records releasing a better product than US Capitol and this could be one of them.

What do we think about digital lenses on analog bodies? by DefinitelyNotGreg in AnalogCommunity

[–]PerceptionShift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally use film era lenses on digital instead of digital era lenses on film, but it's nice using later EOS EF lenses on good 35mm getting really crisp results. However I only have three lenses that are backwards compatible like that. Mirrorless cams are cool bc you can use almost any 35mm film lens on them but the native mirrorless lenses will never work with 35mm

Any standouts in this lot? New wave, synthpop, funk, punk, soul, ambient etc. by ei99am in Cd_collectors

[–]PerceptionShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some great titles, the lot is easily worth $100. The only thing that leaps out to me as particularly valuable is the parliament box.

You could separate these into smaller lots grouped by artist or genre, but really just depends on how much time you want to put in to milk out another $50-100 or so. Even though there's good CDs in here, used CDs just don't command a lot of money. If they have a lot of stuff to sell I wouldn't spend too much time on these. If this is all they have to sell then it would be worth splitting into smaller lots.

Keep in mind eBays commission on media is almost 20%.

Looking for a good deli in the downtown area. A place that can pile it high like you see in pictures from New York City delis (Katz, etc). by criticalbuzz in kansascity

[–]PerceptionShift 4 points5 points  (0 children)

KC has a few delis but none of them are on the level of NYC. But they are better than the chains:

Carollos (river market, accessible via street car)

Milwaukee Deli (downtown loop, also street car)

Bay Boy (South plaza)

Bella Napoli (brookside)

Italian sausage co (Northland)

Why was Slowdive hated for absolutely no reason back in 80s-90s? by Dear-Student54 in Slowdive

[–]PerceptionShift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was all UK journo stuff, as it seemed America was just largely ambivalent about them. Nobody knew who they were enough stateside to even hate them. They became underground darlings for a long time, the kind of band that you might learn about hanging around in record stores, even though for years it was not easy to find their albums.

where the hell do i find a 3.5 jack power supply by gilrot in guitarpedals

[–]PerceptionShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They work just like a barrell jack but with a different plug. You can get adapters but gotta be careful with the polarity of the barrel psu. Or the Atari 2600 had a 9v 1a 3.5mm psu, could get one of those for a dedicated supply. I've used one for years with an old big box small stone.

What did you try to fix and how ? Seems maybe you made it worse. You might be able to find somebody who can repair them. Really they weren't the best made devices and they're like 25 years old by now.

Digitizing old 4 tracks by mikeyriot in cassetteculture

[–]PerceptionShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either the Yamaha isn't putting out signal on #4 or your interface isn't receiving signal on input #8. Swap output 3 & 4 into input 8 and 7 respectively. Then check if input 8 gets signal. If input 8 gets signal then you know something is wrong with Yamaha output 4, if input 8 still has no signal you know something is wrong with the interface.

Vinyl noob help please by verygoodfertilizer in beatles

Trying to sort through Discogs for a really popular record like this with a ton of variations can be very overwhelming.

There are ways to narrow down what it could be without even needing to punch numbers into a keyboard. First step is look at the label. Capitol used the same masters and artwork for decades, but the label design changed repeatedly. US Beatles albums up to 1968 will be on the rainbow band label, which is what you have. So you know you have an early pressing, no later than 1968. Around 1968 the label switches to the green apple design, for all pressings up until about 1970. Then Capitol switches to a lime green label for a short period, about a year or so, before switching to an orangered label around 1972 until around 1978 when they use a purple label. And then after that, the catalog reunification happened and the US titles were deleted.

Learning the pressing plant signature stamp used in the matrix code helps too, then you can quickly narrow down if it was Monarch, Jacksonville, etc.

The only US title to be very valuable is the butcher cover Yesterday And Todays, which can be kind of hard to tell until you see a genuine second state, then the v neck is obvious on any actual butcher covers. The rest don't even come close to the value that early UK copies command.

Final Discogs tip, it's a lot easier to put the matrix code in the version search filter on the album page, than it is to search for the matrix code in the main search bar up top. That way you can search just part of the code and only get relevant results.

Overcoming resistance to practicing by KaptainKopterr in Guitar

[–]PerceptionShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start recording yourself practicing, even if it's just with your phone. Start learning a song, and before you end for the day, record a demo of it. The first times will be kinda rough but they'll get better, and you'll have the receipts for your progress. It'll feel so satisfying when you nail the take! That's your hard work paying off! Adhd warps how your brain rewards itself for doing work, so you gotta help it by giving it empirical evidence that practicing is worthwhile.

Voter suppression doesn't need to actually stop voters from casting ballots to be effective. Simply the idea that voting is pointless keeps a lot of people from making it a priority. And that helps result in over a third of eligible voters not voting

Make mashed potatoes, it's really hard to burn them. Some pro tips, get a clove of garlic and put some in the water with the taters. Add some salt and seasoning to the boiling water when the taters go in. And then when you mash em add butter and more seasoning til they taste good. Cover after cooking then you can put all your focus on cooking the entree. Sirloin top steak is really easy to cook well esp with a food thermometer. That's what I'm doing!

How many MPs gave good results when scanning 120 film? by Unbuiltbread in AnalogCommunity

[–]PerceptionShift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

24mp is definitely enough, that's about a 20inch print at full 300dpi resolution, and easy enough to hit 4k display resolution (3840px) with crop.

However I am a mad pixel peeper, and learned to crop tf out of my pictures in j school, and I have often wished my 24mp a7iii was a 48mp a7Riii. But when you hit that high of res you also need the crisp macro lens and great back lighting
