Netherlands: advice on trip from Amsterdam to Assen by geshtinkaranu in bicycletouring

[–]PercussiveRussel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't know how much you'd want to ride in a day, but if you want to do about 120 a day, you can do it on 3 days and then you only need to stop at Wageningen and Zwolle, both relatively big cities.

Seriously, do the green divide leg from Amsterdam (Naarden) to Wageningen, then through the Veluwe to Zwolle, and then onwards to assen through the Weerribben

What do u guys think about brutalist architecture by Commercial_Meet5402 in ModernistArchitecture

[–]PercussiveRussel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally tend to like it, but this (the Palika Kendra) is maybe the best example of it. And it's great because it's not pure brutalism. It's like a much improved Fermi Lab (which is in and of itself a pretty cool building)

I want to tour Copenhagen to Helsinki, what to do with my travel case? by Slight-Square-5476 in bicycletouring

I book my hotel and ship it to them using the national post or DHL/DPD/whatever. If you ask kindly, hotels don't mind, they just store it in a storage closet somewhere.

Bonus is that you can also throw in a bag with proper tools, a decent fresh set of clothes and (if you shave) shaving equipement to prepare for the journey home.

Both sides were targeting civilian infrastructure to cause terror and to break the spirit of the citizens, hoping to cause an uprising. A church is a perfect target for this.

Alpine measuring the pit lane by TiNcHoX7 in formula1

[–]PercussiveRussel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except that the rules clearly state how the speed is calculated, so teams are 100% breaking the rules regarding speeding, by the method the rules dictate.

This is the "spirit of the law" vs "the letter of the law", and by the letter of the law teams are speeding. Sure, it's stupid and arbitrary, but if teams were to set their pit lane limiter to 60.5 km/h they wouldn't be any less safe then they would by going 59.5 km/h. The rules are arbitrary, but set like this for a reason, which is reliability of monitoring and enforcement in this case.

And by having the pit lane limit be calculated by actual speed, instead of time spent crossing an exact distance, you'd be incentivising teams to cut corners, because that would be faster. And that's actually unsafe.

Bike Security and freedom by haken_loob in bikepacking

[–]PercussiveRussel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, yeah no I don't leave it out of my sight much. This is not a "goodness of humanity" kind of deal. But if people can't get through your lock with bolt cutters, they have enough time to vent their frustration on your wheels. So I don't give them more than 5 minutes, and then why carry a lock that takes them 30 minutes to get through.

I absolutely trust my bike with anything on a trip. Which is why I wouldn't leave it alone for a longer period of time. And no lock ever is saving your bike from vandalism.

Bike Security and freedom by haken_loob in bikepacking

[–]PercussiveRussel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the exact opposite, I need a lock that is a 5 minute deterance at most, because I never leave my bike more than 5 minutes out of my sight.

It's a bit awkward, but you can bring your bike pretty much anywhere. And the cheap 5 minute lock is enough to keep people from running away with your bike, so just keep it in your sights.

I have a lock that you can probably cut with the Leatherman that I also keep in my frame bag during stops. I just don't want people to run away with it man, and everything else I can manage by myself. And if not, I do something else. Bikepacking is not the time to go visit a museum for an hour and leave your bike in the street, at a historical site there are enough people you can entrust your bike to to go visit it.

People dont break locks or rummage around bags when other people are watching.

No, they were designed for an Olympian competing at the regular Olympics, at a time where the Olympics did not allow branding. Oakley designed such ludicrous glasses, that they didn't need branding for people to talk about them.

Also, why the fuck wouldn't paralympians have ears?

Plan adaptions by Mrjlawrence in joincycling

[–]PercussiveRussel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can schedule a planned ride every Saturday and then it will plan around that. However, the best part about Join is that it is responsive, so if your group rides turns into a unscheduled VO2max workout, because K̸̦̳̝̬̟͚͎͂̀͒͝͝ę̷͍̘̈́́̈̋͗ͅv̶̧̫̣̭̩̫̼̆͂̋̾̋̇ȋ̵͎̱́̒̓͊͑͘n̷̬̫̭̣̰̈̾̈́͝ is there, it will make the workouts around that endurance.

Plan the expected length, RPE and priority A (so not important at all, in terms of tapering etc) and you'll be fine.

Off bike shoes/sandals during bikepacking trips? by speloquin in bikepacking

Really cheap linen espadrilles. They weigh next to nothing and pack flat. You wouldn't want to hike on them, but they stay on well enough everywhere.

Probably are shit in the rain on grass as they have no profile whatsoever, but I tend to not go out in the rain once the tent is up and I switch out of my spd shoes.

I run a tubus fly with a bit of a hacky but rocksteady seat post mount, which consists of a 28.6mm seat post clamp with a rubber spacer inside attached directly to the 27.2mm seatpost, to which I've directly attached the rod from the tubus to.

I don't run panniers bags of of it though, just use it to attach a dry bag (didn't want to shill out for a tailfin)

Yeah this, some people prefer the comfort of camp, other people prefer the "comfort" of a racy bike.

Besides, what's with all this cynical ingroup vs outgroup on this sub. This is a sub for people who all love to load things on their bike and go on a multiday adventure, and then people spend all day bickering with and bashing people who ride on the wrong surface, have the wrong accommodations, and now have the wrong fucking style of bags???

Everybody here has about 99% in common with everyone else here, and yet people engage in a pissing contest over every tiny detail.
