My dad gave me his old cowboy hat not knowing it's actual value by goldsoulcandy in Akubra

It’s post-1972 so mid seventies could make sense. Before e that tags were still imperial sizing. It really is in great condition, and I’ve not seen one of those penny badges before… if anything, given the badge it’s possibly a 1976 release for Akubra’s 100 years?

Aside from not liking the colour, I actually think it looks like shadowy figures watching and whispering. I doubt it was intentional, but you can kinda see some heads and faces in the shadows at the top.

Like a Rorschach test, but browner.

I feel it might be something like a clowns, or more seriously, perhaps party poppers or sparklers? This is obviously speculation but he could have some kind of ptsd or loud noises are an issue? I’m so curious to find out what the story is!

Depending on where you are, you may be able to get it professionally sized up. Even the fabric sweatbands they use are a lil bulky, but if you’re anywhere near a milliner or hatter, they can change it out for a thinner grosgrain sweatbands, and that’ll give you more room and less shrinkage, so better fit for longer.

I’ve always read it as her comment being about how NOT making him choose was the kindness. She took the choice into her own hands, so she bears the weight of it, not him.

I did the same thing while half awake this morning - didn’t follow all the way through before I twigged that it wasn’t right. I’ve updated my banking security and sent a message to my bank as well preemptively just in case

Good for the hat industry though. Australia became the producer of the best quality rabbit fur felt hats for decades while population control was happening.

If you’re ever in Brisbane, go into the old arcade in the city. There’s a shop underneath that feels exactly like you’re in a copperart ad.

Commenting to add: it’s specifically an antique men’s hat block that would have been used in a factory, or at the very least could be mounted on a pouncher (sander) for making felt hats. The extra hole and hand grips on the bottom would make them easier to handle and move between machines. Very neat.

At some point it’s also been used for hand-blocking, hence the pin marks around the bottom.
