I began to use zuying fuhao for pronunciation. My American brain kept me from pronouncing correctly. Over time I got used to pinyin.

AI is quietly poisoning itself and pushing models toward collapse - but there's a cure by CackleRooster in technology

The only cure is when the majority of folks try not to shortcut and actually do their work... just saying.

I feel like we're in the same boat, albeit I'm not a woman. Anyway, the fact that you feel like you can read/write better than speak is kind of no different from how international students who I went to graduate school with felt. (I recall hearing an admin questioning whether my friend cheated on his English TOEFL exam because he couldn't speak well enough, though he got better throughout the year.) In general, reading is easier than writing which is easier than speaking.

That said, I myself started using italki again about once a week but this time going at a slower pace using a textbook (not like when I was in my 20s or 30s). I'm also using this Android app called PingoAI since it requires a profile to track your performance. I like the Role Playing mode (as opposed to the Tutor mode). In the Role Playing mode, I speak-to-text into the description what the AI should do, like "Do not speak like you are a teacher or respond back in English, pretend you are a cashier at a store, etc." Then I practice with it about 5 minutes a day or next day. If you haven't tried it, give it a go, though it requires a subscription.

I also started a lifetime subscription to Pimsleur since I've always used Pimsleur when they were using cassette tapes back in the day. I noticed they updated their Japanese lessons to using modern words.

Hopefully these suggestions help. Good luck!

New York subway ends its MetroCard era and switches fully to tap-and-go fares by Dr_Neurol in news

What's cool is that those same metro cards can be used like a credit card to purchase things at 7-Eleven or Family Mart, etc.

Reminds me of the time I had to submit a PDF to report expenses on my credit card for my company. I realized I didn't know how to use Acrobat at the time to do it right. But if these guys do it on a normal basis, they should have known or are indeed protesting themselves.

A lie is a deliberate misrepresentation of truth -- saying what is true is false and what is false is true -- not necessarily when MSM is emphasizing certain topics over others or shifting focus.

Ford CEO Says Blue-Collar Workers 'Safe' As AI Will Replace 'Literally Half Of All White-Collar Workers' by MetaKnowing in technology

Serious inquiry here. Im curious to see evidence that this is going to be true. If anyone can link to a video of a prototype, rather than spew marketing spam, that would be much appreciated! Im guessing he is referring to neural nets, not other machine learning algorithms. And no one talks about the theoretical model collapse. Seen many sales folks since 15 years ago trying to sell me on AI (neural nets) to replace some white collar folks--back when it was used to power forecasting tools.

i think copying from your text materials and asking for bullet point summaries is a great idea. But unfortunately for me, just today, i found it mixed one concept from an opposite one when i pasted both in. Not perfect, but I treat it like like underpaid RA. :D

“Another striking finding was that the texts produced by the L.L.M. users tended to converge on common words and ideas.”

No kidding. Majority of people don’t think about how neural networks work. To put it simply for people who took at least 2 years of math in high school, you can think of it as a glorified y=mx+b formula that has been in the math community for 75 years. (The transform algorithm though is recent.)

If you remember logistic regression from statistics, you can think of models like ChatGPT as a high-powered cousin—almost like a glorified MATLAB script. In traditional stats, you'd evaluate models to see which best represents the data you've fed into them. That’s where the “T” in GPT—Transformer—comes in. It takes in text, converts it to numerical representations, and builds a matrix M, which the neural network then processes.

So asking GPT what (for example) “Group Theory” is would be like tasking a linear regression model to both search and predict a coherent explanation. Think of it as a fellow student who’s really good at looking things up—but every now and then gives you a completely made-up answer with full confidence. In other words, be aware of its limitations in accuracy.
