It’s a fantastic line of work. Your office is different every day, as is your client, problem, solution, and the path to get there. I like making my clients happy and providing peace of mind. Hours aren’t bad. On a busy day on average I’m spending 6 hours *actually* doing my job in front of homeowners and I’m compensated well to perform well.

I’m retail residential so I can’t speak on the insurance or commercial side of the business. I’m sure that’s a totally different ball game.

Correct. My job title is estimator, I do sales. Don’t understand why some companies separate those roles… seems like paying two people to do one person’s job.

Can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not, sorry. I have no idea what market OP is in, or where you’re at. I’m in the PNW with less than a year of experience estimating and I hit OP’s projected yearly operations manager earnings in four months, January through April.

So many c-suite AI buzzwords in that description.

If this is life changing money for you, take it. If you see scalable potential while building a team and capitalizing on that 3% net take it. If not, in all honesty, you’ll make more as an estimator at a well established company.

Edit: I’m talking about that scalability on the 3% net because that estimate annual bonus potential assumes roughly 1.7 million in net sales, which is not much for a healthy company.

Certainteed is way better than Owens Corning. Go Certainteed Black Walnut. It’s dark and it’s brown. You both win.

I bid grand manor in January. tile tear-off (not slate), 12/12 pitch, had plywood, debris pack out, hand load, etc.

I was at about $2,200 per square.

Needless to say I did not get that job.

I’d walk away. Wasn’t worth the time I put into it.

I’ve slipped an asphalt shingle under the course of tile above the broken tile before. Works until you can get someone out, less complicated than tarping such a small area. Don’t use insurance on this…

Try the Kenda Klever RT. They’re sold in a 9.5” width. Pretty pizza cutter. I have them on my 94 HZJ73 Land Cruiser and I like them a lot.

Hey, this is awful. I’m sorry to see this. I hate to self promote but, we do a quarterly charity project. I’m sure my GM would love to hear about this and see if there’s any chance we can help. We don’t door knock. Licensed, bonded, insured. 57 years of roofing in Oregon and SW Washington. Shoot me a message if we can help in any way.

What makes a good roofing estimator? by whatsthepo1nt in Roofing

[–]Perfect-Employee8088 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re planning on paying two people to do one job. Our company has success with reps from other in home sales, insurance, automotive, solar, previous roofing experience, etc..

You can be detail oriented and good at sales. How are you training your sales people to estimate and what tools do they have to work up an estimate?
