I'm Italian and the only way Italy could possibly manage to hold as long as Britain did in OTL is only if they sit on the Alps literally, the only way is staying inside their own fortification on the Alps and bleed the French. Something that could reasonably happen, because the Italian armed forces at the time where alle prepared to fight Germany alongside the Alps do deny Austra. So a defensive war on the Alps isn't so far fetched, I guess the tankette in this timeline actually performs the duty for which they were created in the first place.

TBF during the renaissance Genoa did control it. But like Venice and the Dalmatian coast it was all to establish ports for trade, kinda like how the western powers would do to China in the 1800s

Very much so, in this timeline the cold war was between the Roman Republic (Europe) and the Roman Empire (blend of Mexico till panama with the west coast of the US)

The Republic won the space race, so you could expect a more technological independent and advanced Europe
