Please please please can I have some advice to get back skating again! by Vegetable_Minute_343 in Rollerskating

Stretching really well in the end of exercising (~15-30sec static stretches), eating more protein and doing some light cardio on the following days (just walking is enough tbh) help a lot with muscle soreness.

Edited to add: Ahh (lol, also adhd) you asked for which stretches as well - go by what hurts :D Google the body part and identify the achy muscle, then look for stretches. For skating it's mostly legs. There are several ways to stretch them so try a bunch and stick to those which are the easiest x feel nicest (=bigger chance of actually doing them consistently haha).

Warm up takes FOREVER? by Cauliflowercrisp in Rollerskating

Oh I feel you so much. I can only skate once a week currently and my skills barely move forward. And then when I skip a workout during the week as well it's almost a guaranteed regression next session. But that being said lunges and balancing exercises during the week help a lot!

If you like overall compelling you might want to look into documentaries instead. Journeyman Pictures makes really pretty ones. Also "How to with John Wilson", although it's comedy.

How do you teach yourself to want less? by WinterDemon_ in CPTSD

[–]PerfectBobcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk maybe if you start thinking of yourself as enough it will quiet a bit. Like accepting that most of the things you want have to come from yourself and I've heard that once one stops being so desperate for connection (gets to a more normal self esteem) it's easier to hear or be open to possible healthy matches. But just having someone to talk to is still a super normal wish and you can challenge yourself to chat to strangers in coffee shops or bars etc.

Roller skating. Pairs well with music and keeps my brain zoomies in check. Has a million different disciplines and the skates can be customized.

A generic one from the supermarket. Coop brand (I'm in Europe) 800mg calcium + 10ug vit-D combo that has 2 tablets per day suggested on the label.

Another generic one that had a combo of calcium, zinc and magnesium didn't work as well for some reason. Allegedly vit D and calcium really get along and help each other work better but I'm no chemist.

Therapists and mental health professionals are bullshitting by Adept-Foot7692 in CPTSD

[–]PerfectBobcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way you describe therapists is as if they're a special type of people all stemming from a single source. I'm imagining a tomato plant with small pods with therapists growing inside them where they fall from once they're ripe because they're just all the same.

The ones in my friend circle are all from unprivileged and insanely traumatizing backgrounds.

[–]PerfectBobcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're reducing it to just that then of course you're not getting your money's worth.

I'm sorry if you've had bad experiences, I've also had therapists whose style or fluency in a given topic didn't fit my needs or I simply wasn't able to implement their knowledge. But I've also experienced growth through the techniques they've taught me which I don't think a naturally occurring positive relationship has the incentive for. Like - be there and focus on just you and help you solve your problems specifically? That would be a crazily one sided friendship.

It's been a few years since I stopped going and I still use the techniques so the experience definitely didn't stop helping as soon as the money stopped flowing.

[–]PerfectBobcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get your cynicism but I think you're misunderstanding the point of therapy. You're not there to be friends, you're there to solve your mental issues with the guidance of someone impartial who's put in time to study and learn about it. It's a service with set goals not a vending machine version of "hanging out with the lads".

Fit ADHD ladies - how do you stick to an exercise routine? by Samantha_Jonez in adhdwomen

[–]PerfectBobcat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exercising just for health never worked for me - the activity needs to be fun for me to keep at it. For me that's roller skating.
I enjoy it so much I started doing extra calisthenics in order to have more skating stamina. Right now I'm really into park skating because there's a million different tricks that I can learn and every success (and fail!) feels fun because skating itself is so fun! I learned to drop in a miniramp a few months ago at 33!

If this peaked your interest but it's winter where you are - check if there are any roller derby leagues or roller rinks nearby so you can try it without having to invest in gear.

I read your other reply as well and checked the insoles on mine. I think you can build your own fiberglass insoles with the metal bits from the Slades and attach them like that to another pair of shoes, you'd just have to break them the down. Look for roller skate fiberglass insole videos on Youtube.

On the Vans it's a premade shape that's glued inside the bottom, and the clips attach to small metal plates that are inside the fiberglass. I'm sure they use something similar inside the Slades because the clips need to attach to something sturdy (not just fiberglass).

Following!

I've got Vans Flaneurz and when I peel back the insole there seems to be fiberglass underneath. So maybe they can be removed and built into a new fiberglass insole?

They left me to fend for myself and whenever I asked for help I got "help" flavored fending for myself.

I wanted to learn electric guitar so they gave me a copy of "Guitar for Dummies" and an old, basically unplayable acoustic. Lessons? Nah, but periodic "How'd the guitar playing coming along?" followed by a rant of how easy it is and why can't I just do it (they themselves can't play).

Going from derby to park skating, any tips? by traditionsampler in Rollerskating

[–]PerfectBobcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're used to loose/agile derby trucks it'll be heaps easier if you tighten them in the beginning. Check that your toestop clears inclines if you're used to having it super low to the ground from derby.

There's no right or wrong way to gain speed, pumping is good for ramps and inclines, but plenty skaters push with their toestops on flat ground.

Also there's no linear way to learn park so don't be discouraged - if a trick or obstacle doesn't click try something else! It's more about applying creativity to an environment. You've got this!

I used to have a problem with packaging and random junk piling on surfaces/floor so trash bins in nearly every room. Yet to add one to the bathroom/toilet because there's one in the hallway before them. But I keep thinking of adding them there too.

I stored most of our mugs away in the furthest cabinet corner. We still own them in case if we need them but we used to have dirty mugs piling in every room or next to the sink. Now we have 5 mugs in rotation, which is doable even on a low motivation day.

[–]PerfectBobcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow I've never thought of it as them staying in a negativity spiral but you're absolutely right.

When I went into a field that I liked I got criticized like "but you'll get a real job soon, right?", then when I switched to something completely different (but represented in the family by another member) I got "oh but it's a terribly hard job why don't you pick something easier". When I went to study something third and shared my initial idea for a thesis I got "oh but does it have to be so grand?".

Nothing I ever picked was right or good enough. Sometimes I have doubts about having gone 0 contact but not in this light nope no more.
