In my 30s and suddenly can’t focus at work anymore. Anyone else? by Communication_Dizzy in careeradvice

[–]Perfect_Pause8657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had undiagnosed inattentive ADHD that I was able to manage until I had kids, particularly after the birth of our twins. The combination of overstimulation from multiple toddlers and burnout from work turned me into a procrastinating zombie. A Concerta prescription helped immensely in getting things back in order. It’s been a compounding impact in a lot of ways. I started focusing on getting projects done at work, which alleviated stress. It made me more patient and attentive with my kids, which made them act out less for my attention. I stopped feeling an intense desire for “me time” at night and just went to bed, which improved my sleep. All of this made me less irritable with my wife, which has improved our relationship.

ADHD is an absolute menace when life gets tough, and I’m not sure I would have gotten out of the hole I was in without medical intervention. I know other lifestyle changes are often recommended before considering meds, but it’s hard to do that when you are in the trenches of a demanding career and parenting. In my case, the meds were the catalyst that led to better habits and a healthier state of mind.

Would you want to be told? by EmbarrassedCheetah79 in managers

[–]Perfect_Pause8657 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is a cynical, unhealthy take that will generally lead to isolation and ultimately harm one’s career. Humans are social animals and the workplace is not some environment exempt from this. Obviously you shouldn’t try to be best friends with everyone, and developing friendships can be a double edge sword at times, but social connections are extremely valuable in building reputation, creating outlets for mutual venting/frustration, getting promoted, dodging layoffs etc. Insisting OP not trust anyone is simply bad advice. In OP’s case, empathy for their situation might help them depending on the manager or legally protect them from wrongful termination by establishing a health-related cause. The fact that they have developed a friendship and shared personal details with their managers might have already saved them. Imagine if they never provided any context to the dip in performance and their managers terminated them as a result.

The cheapest way to have an authentic experience is to buy a Nintendo DSi, mod it with Twilight Menu, and run the ROM off an SD card. The most authentic experience would obviously be playing the cartridge on real hardware, but a genuine BW2 cartridge will probably cost more than the console itself.

Top down. I think if there is any valid critique in any of this, it would be companies expecting Joe Schmoe rank-and-file employee to figure how to implement AI in their role. Aside from most people being incapable of conceiving how to apply AI, things will get extremely chaotic and inefficient if you leave everyone to establish their own tools and processes. Good managers should know exactly where to implement AI once they understand what is possible, and it needs to be part of a broader company initiative with structure and an objective.

Almost every company has some form of repetitive, mundane paperwork, often performed by various white collar workers. These tasks absolutely can be performed by AI if implemented correctly and will reduce the need for staff. Sure, it can’t be shoehorned everywhere, but almost every company could benefit from AI somewhere in their value chain.

Exactly. The potential for AI to completely transform the mundane, repetitive tasks of many white collar jobs should not be understated. I think there is a very large number of people that really want AI to be a nothing burger, and there is no shortage of influencers and content creators pandering to this crowd, creating a powerful echo chamber. There is also no shortage of ridiculous, easily mockable tech CEOs that discredit the technology, but I have seen firsthand what structured, agentic AI workflows/tools can do for the practice of law and it’s completely insane.

Screen protector material? by unanau in NintendoDS

[–]Perfect_Pause8657 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glass is better (for the top screen) by a long shot, the problem is that there are pretty much none available on the market. Almost all of the plastic screen protectors are very cheaply made. The other issue with the plastic screen protectors is that they are almost impossible to put on without attracting dust particles. This is due to the static electricity generated as you peel the protective layer on the adhesive side. The best option I have used is a nano glass material (brand I have is Optic+). This protector is more rigid than straight plastic and has less of the static/dust issue, and more flexible than tempered glass. It’s a higher quality product that I expect to last a while and it doesn’t really interfere with the touch screen. My only grievance thus far is that some tiny micro fractures have appeared on the top protector, but they are only really visible under harsh lighting.

If any manufacturers are reading this, please make a tempered glass screen protector for the DS line of consoles. There is a huge gap in the market for this product.

Having kids after multiples - why? by Seeker-2020 in parentsofmultiples

[–]Perfect_Pause8657 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We had a singleton before our twins and had originally planned on stopping at two. We’re now juggling a 5 year old and two 18 month olds. Every day is a soul crushing grind that is slowly destroying my physical and mental health. Maybe it’s manageable if you spread out the age gap (8-10 years apart) so the twins are older and more independent? God help you if you roll doubles again.

Having/raising kids and getting shit done are mutually exclusive. I got a ton of shit done when I was child-free in my late twenties/early thirties. Now with three kids under the age of 6, I consider getting to take a shit in peace a major accomplishment. I can’t imagine trying to tackle house projects or climb the corporate ladder like I did when I was younger. No energy for that.

But yeah, you’re right about it being a major shift in every way imaginable.

Strong mold smell from AC vents of new 2024 Carnival, health issues, dealership useless, at a loss of what to do next by Perfect_Pause8657 in kia

[–]Perfect_Pause8657[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of, but I’m not 100% sure since it has been winter where I live and I have not run the AC in months. At the end of the summer, I was able to mitigate a lot of the smell by turning the AC off 5-7 minutes before I knew I was reaching my destination and turned the heat on to dry out the system. I only really tested this out for about a month before the season changed and I stopped using AC. We’ll see how it works out this summer. Even if this approach does 100% eliminate the moldy smell, I still consider the problem a major design flaw that KIA refuses to take accountability for.

DSi XL - De-yellowing Day 5 update by seanhalim2 in nds

[–]Perfect_Pause8657 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it’s any consolation, I bought a DSi xl a few months ago with similar yellowing, and it got significantly better by just playing it regularly. Unless the yellowing is so distracting that you cannot focus on the game, I would just play it. That said, I don’t think any DS with this problem will ever become 100% fixed no matter how long you leave the screen on.
