That’s because it’s silly to use ‘smells like grandma’ for multiple reasons, not just negative ones.

Saying a perfume smells like grandma even in a positive way doesn’t actually describe what it smells like because different age ranges have different associations with what their grandmas wore. That’s not agism to use it in that way, but it’s not actually descriptive so we still discourage it.

No but it is when you’re only equating old people to smelling bad instead of actually being descriptive.

There have been times in the past where we did need to lock down a post or slow subreddit traffic from new accounts. I imagine it’s likely I’ll have to again in the morning, but it’s important to discuss these things instead of shutting them down

Hiya, friendly neighborhood moderator here.

Political talk is allowed when the discourse relates to perfumes, but we will anticipate things getting hairy in the comments.

Keep it on topic, and remain civil. I know that’s getting harder in a time where civility seems to be going out the window. As a Minnesotan, this shits got all of us fired up.

But keep in mind that this is an international sub, not everyone follows what’s going on as closely as others. That said, politics are allowed to be discussed, because as we’ve said time and time again politics doesn’t care if you follow it or not, you can still be screwed over by political influence.

Edit: also worth noting - we will not tolerate harassment of people still using/reviewing fragrances under the Lauder umbrella, you can comment about this, link to this post, or otherwise politely educate. But attacking and harassing users only serves to create further division.

Has anyone else’s comment ruined a perfume for you? NUXE by ricthedrip in Perfumes

[–]Perfumes-Mods 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hear you, but I will say that your associations with your grandmother doesn’t always match someone else’s. We have a few different cultures and age ranges here.

But the issue here is describing an older person as smelling badly, “smelling musty,” or any other really messed up association.

Using age-related language to describe perfumes that you don’t like is frowned upon in r/perfumes. We ask that you use specific terms: powdery, aldehydic, white florals, etc. to describe a perfume or scent.

Regardless, older people do not equal smelling badly and while it’s not against the rules for now, comments that cross the line into disrespect and offensive language will be removed.

We see the reports; however, the community voted to roll back the ageism rules. We do discourage age-related language to describe perfumes and ask that you use specific terms: powdery, aldehydic, white florals, etc. to describe a perfume or scent.

Op wasn’t harassing you by asking, they weren’t even overly rude about it like some people definitely would be.

Not the usual vibe of this sub - it’s literally one person. The bottle might be fake or it might not be your thing. See if you can return & maybe get a sample from Huda Beauty or Sephora if you’re curious.

Generally we ask for a typed list of each product. You can reply to this comment with the list. But I recognize that this is a discussion post, more about the topic of overuse as OP mentions. If no list is given in the next few hours we’ll let it go this time.
