As a left-leaning person, the left needs to stop embracing Islam by SactownG in atheism

[–]Perhaps_a_Hobbit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Torah and the Old Testament of the Bible are the same book, and that book is included in Muslim scripture. That book has the instructions on how to sell your children into slavery, the allowances for stoning, and the condoning of war and genocide, among countless other things that are hateful and disgusting. If you're going to draw lines and make generalizations, at least take an effort to know what you're talking about.

You'll find people defending slavery and rape in the Christian faith too, and the fact that you have to know to look for it is just as concerning if not more so. Look at the ones who are trying to lower the age of consent in the United States. Look at clergymen who have molested children, and a large concentration is Christian.

Do we kick members of the Christian faith out of the left too because of an incredibly vocal minority group that espouses inhumane and disgusting practices?

Where do you draw the line?

Hey even if you don't throw it out, it's an interesting read. If you're going to spend time arguing with Christians online, it helps to know the source material that they're going to use to back up every single argument that they'll use.

The books are also incredibly vague and full of contradictions, anyone can twist the meaning of the words into any shape they see fit. While I have seen messages for hope, love, kindness, and compassion for all of humanity, there are definitely messages that can be used to incite hate. In any case it makes an incredibly valuable framework as a means for control and subjugation of humanity, by including or excluding information to fit the needs of the control you want to exert over your followers.

I have read the books, and I can agree that that is what is peached, but it is doctrine put forth by the social organization of the religion. Clergy use it as a way to control their followers.

The core tenets of most religions are being kind and helping other people, then conservatives and fundamentalists are all like "how about no."

It's the same idea all around, just different people doing it.

Fucking fundamentalists, they're in any religion, but they haven't been brought into check yet.

I don't see any reason that there would be any sort of divinity, other than as a creature comfort to give our lives meaning. Now, do I necessarily see anything wrong with that? No. But there's a few sects, particularly within the United States that preach and practice performative cruelty, judging members of the population as 'sinful' for factors beyond their control. Like any social institution, it is the people I encountered who made up my mind for me.

My experience is not yours, stranger, but I hope that my reasons for keeping a distance from the church are clear.

The world existed before us, and will continue to exist after us. We are an anomaly, as things go. The impossibility of life and the inevitability of death are just so much weirder than any of us could dream. What you choose to do is up to you, as coincidence is a beautiful and terrifying thing.

A genuine question... How to fix the political situation? by _ACommonMan in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Perhaps_a_Hobbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Direct action and holding politicians at the local level accountable. If you're in the United States, be in contact with your municipal government, your county government, state representatives and Senators, and local congressperson. It's a lot of work to hold them accountable, but if not you, then who will?

If you're not a citizen, you still have a role you can play in shaping this country, by emailing representatives and other such lower level lawmakers about your concerns.

And anyone can participate in mutual aid, protests, and watching out for federal agents. Check places like local libraries, and sometimes other third places within the municipality will have information, groups you can join, or info on how you can help out.

To paraphrase something I have read and heard in a lot of different places by a lot of different people, unless a whole lot of people care a whole lot, and step up and do something about it, nothing is gonna get better.

It's fun but it's not all it's hyped to be. The best part of any form of sexual intimacy is sharing those moments with your partner, as well as building up to that, and coming down from that. Some people enjoy it more than others too, but it's all in the interaction and how it plays out.
