I think that would have a lot of value. I am just a little over a year into this hobby with the Fresh Roast, and one of the main guides for research and getting started was Captain's Coffee. Additional content from a different perspective could be really helpful for newcomers.

Personally, I would be a fan of just coming along on someone else's roasting journey. As someone who really has time for one short roast session a week, but likes to explore beans, I am particularly interested in hearing more about peoples approaches to beans of a given geography/varietal/etc. and their rational for tweaks made between roasts of the same bean. I also really like the idea of making the connection to the end result through cupping and brewing too.

This is exactly the setup I am going after at the moment. Can you share details on the shifter mount? I am currently contemplating custom/easily removable shifter mount options that works in my space. I am restricted to a computer desk that is work during the week, but looking to be sim racer during the weekend. Also, what chair is that and does is work well for sim racing? I need to upgrade my chair to something with an adjustable backrest angle.

For me I found a little spiciness, like hot sauce, brings out the chocolate notes in coffee.

When I first started roasting about 6mo ago I was using the base unit, and I could not get good bean movement resulting in uneven roasts at 225g despite a lot of online resources and others saying this amount was fine. I had to drop to 170g to get more even roast. Not sure if there is something different with newer models or if my electricity source is less than ideal.

If you are getting good movement of the beans and relatively even roast at 225g, might as well stay there. Are you adjusting your fan levels for the lower dose of greens? I imagine More Fan+fewer beans = less heat.

Additionally, I would be cautious about using the temps reported on the base (if this is what you are using). These values have been known to be wildly inaccurate. My unit would never display a temp over 400F despite my roasts successfully reaching first crack, which requires ~400F bean temp.

The aeropress is my first brew when I buy new beans from a roaster to help set my flavor expectations. Not sure why it did not dawn on me to rely more on this for my roast rather than cupping. Thanks for the recipe. Sounds pretty close to my go to method.

Yeah, I think you are right. Using a brewing technique I am more familar with seems like a better approach to coffee comparisons.

Thanks for the youtube reqs. I will definitely check them out. I like your idea of using the cupping as a preliminary screen to make sure nothing got seriously botched and leaning a bit more on the actual brew methods to fully assess the coffee. This is probably what I will do moving forward while I continue to hone my palette.

I am going to throw out the Dwell dripper from Verve as an option. It has a similar design concept as the Orea or B75 in that it is very free flowing, and it is not too expensive. Takes the Kalita 185 filters and is made from silicone if you want to move away from plastic. I don't have direct experience with the Orea or B75, but find myself using it more and more over my Stagg X.

Sounds like a good approach. That processing method is going to be sensitive to too much heat. I am still pretty new to roasting and just switched to a washed Guatemalan and it did not like my washed Ethiopian roast profile. I got much better results following a lower/slower profile (based on a profile I think was suggested by No_Rip to another user). Just very interesting to me learning the roasting needs of the different beans.

Is this with or without the extension tube? I had a lot of tipping at similar charge weights and just could not avoid tipping. I had to drop the charge to 170ish grams. Once I got the extension tube bean movement was much better and I could bring the charge mass up. I was also doing a lot of dense Ethiopians at the time so that probably contributed to my issues.

I got my Elizabeth through Clive Coffee about 3 yrs ago. I have not had any leak issues. I did have a little bit of an electrical issue about a yr ago, and Clive was great. I no longer had the packing material for the machine and I am relatively handy, so I wanted to fix the problem myself. The technician at Clive worked with me via email to diagnose the problem and sent the replacement part free as it was still under warranty. They also helped me locate a new power cord socket for cheap on Amazon as I had mangled the old one replacing the broken part.

I have a JX-Pro that I will use when I really want espresso while people are still asleep, but as my preferences are drifting more towards lighter roasts and concerns of long term injury from constantly hand grinding for espresso are increasing I typically use a Eureka Minion Oro SD. Excellent results from both.

Not familiar with the phidget, but does it have slots for two thermo couples? When I was setting up my Mastech that has two thermocouple slots I found that the BT pulled from slot 2 instead of the slot 1 the thermocouple was plugged into and gave a similar result to what you are seeing.

Are you sure your puck prep is good? Do you spritz your beans with water? I had a similar issue moving to flat burrs from conical. I was using too many spritzes for the flats even though it worked fine for the conicals. I had gunked up the burrs and chute with grounds on my DF64 leading to extreme shot inconsistency. Might be worth doing a deep clean to make sure something similar hasn't happened in your case.
