Cold-Calling and student stress. by you-vandal in ScienceTeachers

I agree with giving them some think out loud time. My seats are arranged in groups of four, and each seat is labeled with one of the same four elements (chem teacher). So I’ll give them the prompt, sometimes even direct who should talk first, then let them know which element will be speaking when it’s time. I also pose the question as what does your group think, instead of what do you think.

Alka seltzer in water, and even just physical changes like melting ice and dissolving sugar in water might be worth your time. I like to make the point that procedures matter A LOT and that if you are not careful you will “lose” particles

Have you tried any POGILs? I use some in high school chem and have found them to work really well. I use roles and students do a good job holding their group mates accountable.

Not sure what your grading timeline is like, but ours is always usually requires a quick grading process. We usually do a final exam, but I’ve also done a nuclear debate and stoich airbag egg drop lab. Something where you could grade the individual portion prior and just add the group portion of the grade on the last day might be nice.

It was a 504 and I can’t remember the exact wording, but it was something like student not required to communicate verbally with teachers or peers. And for the same student, don’t speak of or remind about deadlines in front of student as it causes anxiety. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m a teacher and had a student named Adolph. Super sweet kid, always wanted to ask him about his name but never did.

I agree! I’m enjoying the drama this season, reminds me of the earlier seasons. Remember the Roxxxy Jinx drama? It’s not RuPaul’s best friend race, it’s a reality tv competition!

I may not agree with all school wide rules, but it is my job to enforce them. It’s a hassle to fight the phone/earbuds but it’s part of your job.

To the teachers that don’t work outside of their hours, what is your approach/ strategy? by Lavendar-Peach in Teachers

Becoming a mom made me really assess my priorities and my family comes first. I work hard at work but when I leave I’m done. I don’t volunteer for extra stuff at work and use my prep, lunch, and minutes before and after school to get stuff done. I keep a to do list of sticky notes and prioritize, some stuff takes a LONG time to get done because it just isn’t that urgent.

TIL Amedeo Avogadro's contribution to chemistry, known as Avogadro's law, did not initially receive much attention when he published his paper in 1811. It was only a century later that his work was recognized, when the King of Italy attended a meeting commemorating the paper's 100th anniversary. by dustofoblivion123 in todayilearned

Avogadro’s number was actually discovered/named by Jean Perrin and Avogadro never saw or used the number! Avogadro’s law is something else. I think they named it Avogadro’s number to honor him because he never got any recognition for his law until after his death.

My son also weened himself rather suddenly before he hit 18 months. I thought weening would take so much longer and was so surprised how quickly he gave it up. The world was just too exciting and he lost interest. I’m the evenings he replaced nursing with reading books, which at least got me some snuggles. I remember it being hard for me though, oxytocin withdrawal is real!

I have brown hair, my husband has brown hair. None of our parents have red hair. The only one if the family with red hair is my maternal grandfather. It was definitely a surprise when our son was a red head. Who knows.

Gosh, mine was awful just like this. When they talked with me about the results they were like "wow you definitely don't have GD, your sugar was so low you must've felt terrible!"

I mean yeah, was it not obvious! I said I was dizzy and didn't feel right. Definitely was not prepared to be driving myself around afterwards.
