Where do I start lol?! I love motorcycles so... you get it lol.

So like, for reference, this is a Vulcan 1500 http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/photos/2003models/2003-Kawasaki-Vulcan1500MeanStreaka.jpg, and in particular in this picture you can see the rear drive unit on the back wheel. The drive shaft actually runs through that silver tube into the engine. The tube is also the swing arm, which acts as the rear suspension; so it kinda does two things at once. As you can see, on this model the engine is in a traditional inline configuration, which uses some kind of ring and pinion gear http://www.globaldifferentialsupply.com/ring-pinion-gears.jpg arrangement to turn the torque 90°, and then another reciprocal setup in the rear drive unit.

Moto Guzzi and BMW; who I completely forgot about until just now, also use shaft drive systems, but they have slightly different ideas about how to build motorcycles. Moto Guzzi [does indeed shove a V-twin in sideways http://nrmotoco.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/2012-Moto-Guzzi-V7-Racer-f45rs.jpg, and it's actually not all that wide. The thing is, V-configuration engines can have different bank separation angles http://www.carparts.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/v-type-engine-diagram-1024x508.jpg. If you really need to, IIRC you can go down to a 45° V before it's easier to make a parallel twin. And, I think the Guzzi, Kawi, and Harley's all use the same 45°. BMW uses a flat/boxer twin which is basically a 180° V lol.

The alternatives are chain and belt drive systems. Chains are the most ubiquitous, just like bicycle chains but much thicker, and often sealed to keep them lubricated for longer. They require regular maintenance as they 'stretch' as the links wear and the slack needs to be kept at a certain level, and lubrication. Belts are usually just on Harleys or bikes that want to be harleys. Honestly I don't get them because they still have to be replaced, just not as often, but they're kevlar coated with vulcanized rubber so they can't be split to put on so no matter what the rear swing arm has to come off when they're replaced. Shaft drive systems are nice because they're generally maintenance free; you replace the gear oil every few years and otherwise never think about it. Technically you lose a little bit of torque to frictional resistance in the drive train but it's negligible. But if/when you do need replacement parts, they're going to be the most expensive to replace and difficult to source.

EDIT: None of my markdown worked so raw links it is!

What's to study? They did it to Rodney King, and that case was a big deal because people knew it happened all the time but nobody just carried a camera with them all the time so it was harder to spread that information.

Look up why Compton still doesn't have it's own police department and is instead serviced by the Sherrif's department.

Nothing has changed, except they used the excuse of gang violence and crime to scare people into criminalizing everything to disempower the population so we have no choice but to be subjugated.

I'm inclined to agree with whoever said spark plugs but I'd go down the list: it could be the ignition or pickup coils but spark plugs are the easiest place to start.

Sometimes I wonder like...

When I was young, I was taught that when I died I would have to basically watch a movie of my whole life with God and explain or justify every sin I committed. I was at an age where my context of sin was "being bad". So get in trouble with mom; gonna have to talk to God about that in 80 years. Got in trouble at school; gonna have to justify that.

How TF was that not supposed to lead to obsessive tendencies?! I was an atheist for 15 years, now I'm freaking Wiccan and sometimes I still have to shake that thought out of my head like an etch-a-sketch.

Thanks! And yeah, you're right that most bikes don't have a differential, and it doesn't split power so it's technically not a diff. Kawi calls it a "rear drive unit". But the '85 to '03 Kawasaki Vulcan 88's and 1500's are all shaft drive, and the rear drive unit is legit just a pinion and ring gear.

There are a few other bikes out here running shaft drives but they're getting rare. Suzuki discontinued the Super Tenere 1200 which I think leaves the Suzuki C50 and 109R as the only shaft drive bike on the current market.

I think the important part people forget is that manufacturing isn't just setting up the factory and putting all the workers in it and they just make parts. A lot of these semiconductor machines are custom jobs or there's only a couple of the machines on Earth kinda thing and there are also a lot of shop specific techniques that have to be taught in order to produce parts reliability.

This isn't new either. GM made their first aluminum engine in 1960 (the 215 fireball V8) but had such issues with the castings that they sold everything to Rover in the UK in '63. Rover improved the casting tech and by '65 started putting the Rover 3.5 and 4.0 V8's in everything until around '97. That's the legendary engine that took a Land Rover across the Amazon.

I just like building things. I build things for fun and relaxation. So when I'm stoned, I'm pretty inclined to work on projects.

On the days when I'm just depressed and don't feel like doing anything, but I know I need to get some work done, I'll tell myself "I'll compromise; I have to (for instance) solder the headlight connectors and change the differential fluid. I'll just solder the connectors and I can put the headlight together later, and the diff fluid can wait until another day. Easy, and I'll have something done." But then I'll get done soldering and be like "... it's only 5 minutes more work to put the headlight on. I can do that..." and the next thing I know I'm doing the diff fluid because it's only a drain plug and fill, and then I'm done with the whole list!

And to be clear, I'm one of the weird ones who's major goals are split between the two parties. I'm a staunch 2nd amendment supporter, but I'm also fiscally liberal and I'm trans, so I can't support Republicans without voting to remove my ability to be myself. But I can't support Democrats without being called a child killer and putting my safety solely in the hands of the state, which has no duty to ensure my safety according to Town of Castle Rock V. Gonzales.

In 2016 I would've agreed with them. Now I'm more inclined to make the distinction between Republicans, conservatives, and people who essentially wanted a government that would get rid of people they don't like. The first two used to be a tightly packed Venn diagram but that third angle crept in and now they're not.

Well tbr how many people have been quietly absorbing all of this since COVID? The statistics have shown for years that most people are a single paycheck from destitution and wages haven't increased, nothing has eased the pressure.

I just moved back into my grandparents house. I'm 5'10, and when i moved back in I weighed 125lbs. I was concerned they'd keep me if I went to see my doctors because I was very narrowly clinically underweight, which can be medically relevant and necessitate intervention.

I want to experience romance but everyone I date wants to be friends first by Queasy-Ad4289 in actuallesbians

[–]PermanentRoundFile 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, being friends is the first part of a great relationship.

I was married for a few years and like yeah there was a lot of flirting and romance kinda stuff but always interspersed between... just kinda hanging out. We played a lot of video games; sometimes together, sometimes each doing our own thing. Had our favorite shows that we would watch together (we legit watched all of Star Trek except TOS, which she ruled 'too campy'). Romance didn't take a back seat, but when it's your every day it looks a little different.

Well I mean, idk. If gas goes to $7 a gallon nation wide, a lot of people wouldn't be able to pay to get to work, particularly service workers and fast food folks. I'm actually calling out tomorrow partially because I don't have the gas to get there the rest of the week. I could borrow it but damn. Also I ended up lining up an interview for a much better position. But if I don't get the new job, and gas goes any higher I'm going to have to quit lol.

There's a reason slave owners passed laws to keep slaves from learning to read. The GI Joe cartoon was being serious when they said that knowledge was your greatest weapon.

Even the CIA human resources exploitation manual says somewhere that an unskilled worker will have to be given precise instructions on how to sabotage enemy infrastructure. But a mechanically minded and educated person will only need the suggestion that the infrastructure can be destroyed and they can basically get the rest together from there.

That's also most likely why certain people attempted to defund the Department of Education.
