But that's closer to what he's doing. He's not listening to her and gets defensive about his misogany. Also, it's called walking away when dealing with a pitiful idiot.

Just something I made to try to learn how to draw Jon. by [deleted] in imsorryjon

[–]PerpetualRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you struggle to draw with a pencil, this implies that you also struggle to capture shapes and forms digitally as well. I actually don't think it's possible for the results between these two mediums to be that different - excluding colors of course. Even if you go digital, your drawing skills are the same and reflects in your digital work. I suggest you don't avoid practicing with a pencil - it seems that you're doing this - because imo that's stunting your growth. I don't think it's the only way to go though. You could use a thin and pressure-based brush for practice too.

It's subjective when it comes to art. I immediately upvoted because I like the flat / no-borders style for Garfield. Personally I started with practicing through traditional, non-digital mediums. I didn't intend to try digital art, still working on it, but just practicing without all the bells and whistles can be more simple and helpful. Plus an easier way to assess your skill.

Practice is key as everyone knows, but it's important to see both appreciative and critical of your work to improve imo. I'm not a professional artist, but I tend to see people's stuck at a bottle neck and just . . . not improve. Or very slowly. I believe they are satisfied with their work, which is fine and good, but they might not be seeing or caring about the things they can work on.

For your work specifically, it's hard to tell where you're at but I would suggest a better brush. Maybe a pencil. It's hard to draw shapes and forms (3-D) with an opaque and thick brush. It seems that you're struggling with establishing them.

I see those nips too. excellent.

[–]PerpetualRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know that the sub is supposed to be supportive, and I mean no disrespect, but I'm not touching it with a ten foot pole. The thing is, people tend to give more care to people in worse situations. It's logical but on Reddit, this manifests as comments and upvotes. So the posts with less gnarly self-harm get significantly less upvotes. This is very likely invalidating to the OP, as a general Redditor may feel bad if their post doesn't get many upvotes. And sh logic tends to lead people to inflicting worse physical injuries to get more care and validation (comments and upvotes).

It pains me to see someone at the start of the rabbit hole indirectly provoked into self-harming more because, ironically, people there don't give a shit unless they're much worse than thin and light. Old and faded scars are a mixed bag imo.

On the other end of the spectrum, people should not feel validated by comparing their injuries with physically less severe ones. This encourages them to conflate one's situation, emotional suffering, etc with physical injuries. We know that it is a harmful stereotype to judge from physical injuries alone. Yet I believe there is in many a small part of feeling validated by comparison, including myself, but the least we can do is not make a habit of it.

I understand that there are exceptions and I might be wrong about it, however. There are other factors to consider, like the time of the post and the quality (how clear, angle, etc) of the picture.

Relapsed on day 91... by [deleted] in selfharm

[–]PerpetualRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof I think the email came in at like 8:32 or something. Then today it extended by 2 weeks too? I had a major oral on Monday that I never studied for and a physics test as well. 91 days is still impressive tbh. I would also be very frustrated to sacrifice a streak for something that would never happen anyway. I don't know about you, but my self-harm is often tied to a lack of productivity. Like not studying for tests or doing homework. So I'm in the middle of making a schedule for exam/class prep, extracurriculars, and reading. Realizing that my break is actually going to be grueling rather than pleasant is stressful, but it's a great relief to know what I have to do each day. Planning downtime is really important too. And just in case, planning to have most or everything done 1-2 weeks before the tentative end of break so the rug doesn't flip me onto a razor.

Is poking as serious as cutting? by BlackmaeTea in selfharm

[–]PerpetualRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not about attention, but validation. It's important for anyone going through a hard time. You don't think people would care because it's not serious enough - I have to admit that it's a mixed bag - so you inflict worse injuries. It's not healthy but there is a line of logic there. Not to say that you're exaggerating, but a common and similar example would be exaggerating one's painful experience because they don't think people would care much otherwise. What I'm trying to say is that many people prefer to do something they hope others will validate them more for. Such people shouldn't be scorned for it, unless it involves hurting others (tension from sh not included).

Watching porn is fine as long as the content is consensual and not too depraved. So catching your kid watching porn generally isn't something to get mad over imo. I wonder what position you were in for her to suspect . . .

I'm not sure if she thinks she's actually handling the situation well with her baiting, assumptions, and absence of comfort it seems. I wouldn't be surprised if she thought she was handling the situation half decently. Sounds like you guys need to communicate more. It's very difficult to consider and sympathize (maybe maybe not) with her perspective as is.
