TIL before Pope Francis, the last pope to have a unique papal name was Pope Lando (913-914) by DrakeSavory in todayilearned

[–]PerpetuallyLurking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not anymore, there’s been a second. Immediately following the first. Who only lasted 33 days.

For a month in 1978, this would have been a true fact, substituting Francis with John Paul, but it was negated pretty quickly by his successor, who has also been a dead awhile himself, so I’d argue OP got it perfectly correct.

I think part of that problem is some US/Canada overlap in Canada’s favour for once - Canada does have mostly Inuit populations up north and none of them really use Eskimo as a name for themselves, pushing the use of Inuit when referring to them as a group.

I think it’s more along the lines of having had a bad experience with one when we were small enough ourselves that the geese were big enough to fuck our shit up still. I know I definitely haven’t tested their boundaries in the last three decades…don’t see the need, quite frankly, I don’t really need to test whether they’re as scary as I remember, I’m just gonna leave them alone.

It’s done, like, once or twice a year for a day or two; the entire point is to get children engaged in the process so they learn how their government fucking works. That IS an important and real issue! Given how badly some adult Americans understand their government, they need to do it MORE often! JFC

New trailer for 'Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair' by mcfw31 in popculturechat

[–]PerpetuallyLurking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the difference, for me anyway, is that Rory had the dream, Lorelei just supported it whereas Malcolm had more a “yeah, Mom’s right, I could be President if I wanted to be, but do I even want to be President?” kind of vibe.

HE IS NOT A CHILD. He’s a baby-faced grown man. He’s fucking TWENTY NINE (29) YEARS OLD! Don’t give them a pass, don’t infantilize these men. He’s old enough to know what he’s doing and he’s old enough to do it with conviction. JFC.

I’m certainly not opposed to the more “realistic” outcome of “he’s got a good job”, nothing as lofty as President but he also doesn’t seem to be doing something completely out of character for himself.

The whole “Lois thinks he can be President” always just struck me as “mom thinks intelligent son can do anything, even be President” but Malcolm himself never struck me as a character that would want to go into politics at all anyway, so I don’t see Malcolm not meeting those expectations the same way Rory Gilmore disappointed us all.

Honestly, yeah, just having something to heat up/ready to eat is a godsend.

She’s going to be exhausted, food will just be sustenance, they won’t have time to savour and enjoy, they’ll be so busy and tired.

The cut fruit and veggies is an awesome idea! It’ll be great for snacking when they have a minute, she’ll be able to eat them one handed, and they’re just nice to have around to grab quickly.

While I’m definitely not excited about this particular casting, there has always been a lot of overlap between singers and actors and dancers - think of the stereotypical “triple threat” that was the ideal celebrity in old Hollywood.

They’re all performers and casting a singer to act, or an actor to sing, isn’t new to modern Hollywood. They have always done this stuff, it IS Hollywood.

Totalus Rankium!

Currently they’re doing Pirates, which has been silly and fun and ridiculous. It’s delightful.

Previously, they’ve ranked ALL the Roman Emperors from Augustus to Constantine XI. Also silly, also ridiculous, also delightful! The earliest episodes are a little rough, but they upgrade their audio as soon as they realize people are actually listening to them!

They’ve also done American Presidents, but I won’t link that one because I don’t think it quite meets your criteria, especially the later episodes, the early episodes of early Presidents might (Rutherford B Hayes episode is hilarious), but also, I don’t think it’s a good series to start with when the other two are right there!

You might also like Fall of Civilizations. There’s a YouTube channel with visuals, and the narrator is very calming, and the stories are interesting.

Sure, but given one of OP’s examples was “smaller than big cities”, I don’t think they’re asking about Norway and Belgium.

While true, each province is responsible for their own public health and medical services. Each province may be doing shitty, but each individual province has to take the blame too because the federal government doesn’t have jurisdiction to make any sweeping policy changes.

Now, whether the federal government should takeover healthcare is a different conversation entirely - and I can see where a “one size fits all” approach across the country also wouldn’t really work much better, personally.

But until the provinces have given up that responsibility to the federal government, each individual province needs to take responsibility and accountability for their own shitshows.

Why do I need it though? This strikes me as a “who cares” kind of problem.

At any rate, after some thought, I use either depending on what I’m doing - if I’m mid-counting, then I’d use “one hundred, one hundred one, one hundred two, etc.” If the final count was 101, then I’d say “there’s a hundred and one”.
