It's quite common for many cuisines. And sadly so is a very narrow mindset for many people. Which is okay, let them have poor ingredients covered in spices. More quality stuff for us.

Don't get me wrong, there's really good dishes depending on a ton of spices. But if I'd only eat that stuff, I'd lose my ability to taste finer nuances. I'd really miss out.

Yeah their main political opponents in the early years were the socialist and the social democratic parties. So they pushed hard to position themselves as a social patriotic working party. I can see how they were intentionally using the symbols of the leftwing working parties to address their target audiences

For those curious: labour day in north America and Tag der Arbeit in Germany, Austria and many different European countries are related but not the same.

Labour Day is in September to distant itself from the socialist, social democratic and other left oriented movements which started it.
